We’ve put together a list of our favorite islands in Florida. From the warm Gulf Coast to the beautiful islands of the Atlantic and all the way down to the tropical Florida Keys, check out the 14 Florida islands that we just can’t get enough of! 

Florida Gulf Coast Islands

We’ll start our list of the best Islands in Florida on the beautiful gulf coast, moving from north to south. 

Caladesi Island

Caladesi Island actually a state park. It is one of the last untouched islands on Florida’s Gulf Coast, making it an excellent stop for nature lovers. The nearest town to Caladesi Island is Dunedin, but the island is actually only accessible by boat. The most popular way to get there is by taking the ferry that leaves from nearby Honeymoon Island. 

Caladesi Island is an excellent place to kayak, relax on the beach, and search for shells. Visitors can also enjoy fishing and hiking on this pristine island. Caladesi Island State Park is also equipped with a marina for visitors who would like to come over and/or camp on their own boat. 

Gasparilla Island/Little Gasparilla Island

The next destination on our list is not one but two islands. You’ll find these two neighboring islands located between Sarasota and Fort Myers. Actually, the islands are just a bit south of the beach towns of Englewood and Venice!

Gasparilla Island can be reached from the mainland by car via the Boca Grande Causeway, and there are plenty of things to do on the island. Be sure to check out Gasparilla Island State Park, as well as the island’s two lighthouses, the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse and the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum. 

Little Gasparilla Island, on the other hand, is only accessible by private boat or water taxi. Plus, no cars are allowed on the island, so you will have to rely on golf carts to make your way around the island. Little Gasparilla Island is an excellent place to plan a relaxing escape, as you can find various vacation homes available to rent. 

Cayo Costa

Another island that is only accessible by boat, Cayo Costa is one of the largest barrier islands in Florida. Cayo Costa is an excellent place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Sunshine State, as you’ll find nine miles of untouched beaches on the island. In fact, the only accommodation options on Cayo Costa are campsites, and you can find 30 tent sites inside the state park. 

You can enjoy a number of activities on Cayo Costa, such as biking (you can rent bikes on the island), hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, shelling, and more. If you like fishing, cast a line and try to catch some flounder, trout, or snapper. You can take a ferry over to the island from nearby Punta Gorda, Pine Island, or Captiva Island. 

Captiva Island

Speaking of Captiva Island, if we head just a little farther south down the coast, we’ll find this lovely Gulf Coast escape. At just five miles long, Captiva is a small island located near Cayo Costa, Pine Island, and Sanibel Island. It is a great place to enjoy biking, sailing, birding, water sports, and other outdoor activities. Plus, it has some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches that you’ll find on the Gulf Coast.

You’ll find a number of accommodation options on Captiva Island, but if you’re traveling with kids, perhaps your best option is South Seas Island Resort. It offers a number of organized activities for children, as well as 2.5 miles of pristine beaches. However, there are other resorts and vacation rentals on the island if you are looking for alternative accommodation options. 

Sanibel Island

If you drive down Captiva Island you’ll eventually end up on its beautiful neighbor, Sanibel Island. At 12 miles long and up to 3 miles wide at some points, Sanibel Island is about 20 times the size of nearby Captiva. That means more activities, accommodations, and natural Florida Beauty. 

You’ll find some truly spectacular beaches on Sanibel Island, like Bowman’s Beach and Blind Pass Beach, both of which are great places for shelling. There are a number of other attractions that are worth checking out on the island, such as the JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village, and the Sanibel Lighthouse. Drive down Periwinkle Way to find the island’s best dining and shopping options. 

Marco Island

Our final Gulf Coast island destination is located all the way down near the Everglades, just about a half-hour south of Naples. Marco Island is the largest of Florida’s “Ten Thousand Islands”, a chain of islands and mangrove islets off the southwest coast of the state. Consequently, you’ll find beautiful mangrove-lined estuaries in the area, as well as pristine beaches: Tigertail Beach is one of the best shelling beaches near Naples. 

There are plenty of other activities to check out on Marco Island, such as golfing, shopping, dining, fishing, and more. There are also a number of natural refuges in the area that are certainly worth visiting, including Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Collier-Seminole State Park, and Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve.

You can also check out the Briggs Boardwalk on your way out to Marco Island. It’s a fascinating self-guided nature walk where you can learn about the ecosystem, plants, wildlife and more. Plus, it’s a dog-friendly stroll (which we love!). Also, you’re just a short drive away from the world-famous Florida Everglades, which offer an excellent day trip during your stay on Marco Island. 

Florida Atlantic Coast Islands

Now let’s move down the Atlantic Coast and explore what beautiful islands this side of Florida has to offer. 

Amelia Island

You’ll find Amelia Island at the very northern border of the Sunshine State. There are plenty of things to do during your stay at Amelia Island, such as visiting Fort Clinch State Park, located on the northern tip of the island, and exploring the historic downtown Fernandina Beach area. This is a great place to go shopping or grab a bite to eat, as there are plenty of dining options and cute shops downtown. 

You have a variety of accommodation options on Amelia Island, ranging from vacation rentals to upscale hotels. Plus, golfers will absolutely love this island. In fact, it was named one of the 25 best golf islands in the world by LINKS Magazine, the only island in the U.S. to make the list! You have a number of beautiful course options to choose between, so be sure to pack your clubs! Finally, while you’re on the island, be sure to check out the oldest standing lighthouse in the whole state, the Amelia Island Lighthouse. 

Big Talbot Island

Big Talbot Island is actually one of Florida’s numerous state parks. Big Talbot Island State Park is located right outside of Jacksonville, and it is a great way to escape the city and enjoy some of Florida’s natural wonders. This island is a prime location for bird watching, as you can spot ospreys, terns, pelicans, egrets, herons, owls, painted buntings, and even bald eagles!

Aside from birding, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy on the island. There are numerous paths for bikers and hikers, and the islands beaches are perfect for shelling. If you are interested in exploring the area by water, you can sign up for a guided kayak tour, which will take you through special guided trips. You can also rent a kayak and explore the island’s shores and creeks on your own. 

Anastasia Island

Anastasia Island is located right off the shores of historic St. Augustine. This 14-mile long barrier island has a number of interesting attractions that are worth visiting. First off, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum is located on the island. You should also check out the nearby Anastasia State Park, where you can explore pristine beaches, untouched tidal marshes, and breathtaking sand dunes. 

There are a number of spectacular beaches located on Anastasia Island that are certainly worth visiting. You will want to go to St. Augustine Beach, Butler Beach, and Crescent Beach. And if you happen to be traveling with little ones, another great attraction is the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park. For people hoping to stay on the island, you can rent a vacation home or get a room at one of the island’s many hotels. 

Fisher Island

One of the wealthiest zip codes in the country, the exclusive Fisher Island, located right outside of Miami, is only accessible by boat or ferry. With just a little over 170 acres, Fisher Island is home to some 700 families, only about a third of which live there year-round. If you’re looking for accommodations on the island, you can stay at Provident Luxury Suites Fisher Island or Fisher Island Club and Hotel. 

The Fisher Island Club isn’t just a hotel. It also has a spectacular saltwater pool, a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center, and more. The club also has a number of upscale dining options. So if you’re looking for a luxurious and exclusive Florida getaway, Fisher Island is an excellent option for you. 

Key Biscayne

If we head just south of Fisher Island, we’ll find Key Biscayne. This is another beautiful island in the Miami area, albeit more accessible than Fisher Island. In fact, you can drive onto Key Biscayne via the Rickenbacker Causeway. Key Biscayne is a beautiful island with two spectacular natural areas: Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, the latter of which is home to the 19th-century Cape Florida Lighthouse. 

Located near Key Biscayne you’ll find a coastal barrier reef and the only federally recognized underwater archeological trail in the country, making it an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. There are a number of apartment rentals and beach resorts on the island, but for those looking for more upscale accommodation options, you can rent a room at the Ritz-Carlton.  

Florida Keys Islands

Finally, let’s head southwest from the mainland and check out these true island gems of the Florida Keys. 

Islamorada

Islamorada is not one island but actually six! Islamorada is made up of Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, and the offshore islands of Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key. This village of islands is an excellent place to visit if you like fishing, as it has some of the best saltwater fishing in the world. 

This collection of islands is also an excellent destination for snorkelers. One of the most popular attractions in Islamorada is the Theater of the Sea (which by the way, is also dog-friendly!), where you can enjoy interactive dolphin exhibits, sea turtle experiences, and more. You’ll find a number of resorts on Islamorada’s various islands, as well as vacation rentals. 

Little Palm Island

Little Palm Island is unique in that the entire island is a private resort! One of the most exclusive resort islands in Florida, Little Palm Island is located just south of Ramrod Key, and the resort offers a motor yacht service to bring guests in from Little Torch Key. This adults-only island is an ideal destination for a relaxing and romantic getaway. There are no televisions nor telephones in any of the rooms, so the resort is perhaps the perfect place to disconnect from the rest of the world. 

Little Palm Island Resort has a dining room, though private dining accommodations can also be made. The resort also has a spa, and you can sign up for a variety of other activities during your stay, such as kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, sky diving, and more. 

Dry Tortugas 

Dry Tortugas is actually a collection of seven small islands located about 70 miles from Key West. Dry Tortugas National Park can be accessed by seaplane or boat. This eco-tourism destination is one of the most interesting places to visit in the Sunshine State, thanks to its remote location and pristine landscape. 

You’ll find Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, which is the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas. The park is also an excellent place for scuba diving and snorkeling, thanks to its pristine waters and coral reefs. Believe it or not, less than 1% of Dry Tortugas National Park is dry ground, so you’ll certainly want to pack your bathing suit to make the most of these islands! Finally, you even have the option to camp on the park’s Garden Key. Just be sure to come prepared for a rustic and remote camping experience!

Beaches in Fort Myers – One of the Most Popular Things to Do!

NOTE – Hurricane Ian had a major impact on the area. So keep in mind that some of these beaches may still be recovering from the damage. You can check the official Fort Myers website for details on current beach conditions.

Fort Myers has no shortage of incredible beaches, and no matter what atmosphere you’re looking for, you’re sure to find it in this coastal town. To begin, if you’d like a natural, untouched setting, hit up Bunche Beach. Its ungroomed coastline, tidal flats, and mangrove forest offer one of the most pristine natural settings that you’ll find in the Fort Myers area. It’s also a great place for kayaking. 

Our next beach is Fort Myers Beach. This beach is actually located on Estero Island, some 16 miles southwest of downtown Fort Myers. This is one of the best beaches in the area, with various access points and seven miles of picturesque shoreline. 

Another one of the most popular beaches in Fort Myers is Crescent Beach Family Park. This little sliver of coastline is actually part of Fort Myers Beach, and it is a great place to spend a day in the sand with the family. You’ll find picnic tables, beach volleyball courts, and convenient parking. Crescent Beach is the perfect spot for shelling and sand castle-making with the kids.   

Our final beach in Fort Myers is Newton Beach Park. Just like Crescent Beach Family Park, Newton Beach Park is also a part of Fort Myers Beach. The park offers shaded picnic tables and a pristine stretch of sugar-white sand.

Downtown Fort Myers

When we’re talking about downtown Fort Myers, there’s just one name you need to keep in mind: the River District. The Fort Myers River District is the downtown area’s dining and shopping hub. This neighborhood is located along the Caloosahatchee River and is home to many of the town’s historic buildings, as well as a wide offering of restaurants and stores.

This renovated area of town is perfect to explore by foot. It is home to plenty of hotels as well, so if you’re from out of town, it is a very lively place to stay. You’ll find some of the area’s best eateries on First Street, so if you aren’t sure where you want to grab lunch or dinner, take a stroll and discover the town’s numerous local dining options. 

Another great River District spot is the Fort Myers Farmers Market. Open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. every Thursday, the Farmers Market offers a wide variety of produce, prepared food, and artisan goods from local farmers, artists, and creators. Explore the dozens of stalls and sample fresh baked goods, homemade barbecue ribs, and more. 

A couple of other great downtown destinations include The Butterfly Estates, where you can get up close with hundreds of beautiful butterflies, and the Fort Myers Regional Library, which is a great place to take the kids on a rainy afternoon. 

Finally, the downtown River District is one of the city’s best shopping areas. The Franklin Shops are a lovely collection of shops located in a historic art deco building. You’ll find jewelry, art, clothing, and more at this lovely collection of stores. 

Shopping in Fort Myers

Speaking of shopping in Fort Myers, there is no shortage of shops in the downtown area, and you’re sure to find something for everyone. Aside from the Franklin Shops, downtown Fort Myers has a handful of artisan shops. You will find plenty of stores along First Street, such as boutiques, art galleries, and antique stores. 

There are a few shops in particular that you should definitely check out while you’re in town. First off, visit Naples Soap Company for high-quality soap and other skincare products. Or check out Spirit of the Earth, where you’ll find a variety of rare rocks and gemstones. Quarts & Clover has a number of unique gifts, like crystals and incense, while Enjewel offers a lovely selection of clothing and jewelry. 

If you’re hoping to find some popular brands, head to the Edison Mall. Located less than ten minutes from downtown Fort Myers, Edison Mall is home to stores like Dillard’s, Foot Locker, Kay Jewelers, Macy’s, Zales Jewelers, and more.  

And if you love hunting for unique furniture, clothes, and home goods, there are plenty of antique shops you should check out while you’re in town. You can spend hours browsing stores like Magnolia Lane Antiques, Eyeing the Past, Retro Home, and Pickin’ Boots Vintage Market.

Dining in Fort Myers

Dining options abound in Fort Myers, so whatever type of food you’re craving, you’re sure to find it. The list of great downtown Fort Myers restaurants goes on and on, which is part of what makes this town so delightful. You can try lobster rolls, hamburgers, tacos, burritos, pizza, oysters, and more without ever leaving First Street!

Some downtown Fort Myers restaurants that we recommend are Ichiban for Japanese and Chinese cuisine, First Street Restaurant & Bar for British pub fare, The Lodge for barbecue and beer, and Cabos Cantina Taco & Tequila Bar for Mexican food and margaritas.

There are also a number of excellent places downtown for people who are hoping to grab a quick lunch. Head to Green Cup Café for organic salads and wraps, or grab a sandwich at Wise Guys Deli. 

If you’re willing to drive a little outside of downtown, you should check out Lighthouse Restaurant & Bar. This waterfront restaurant serves exquisite seafood and offers picturesque views of the water. Be sure to make your dinner reservations around sunset!

And for those who are planning a special celebration, there are plenty of upscale restaurants in the area as well. Try modern Italian fare at CIBO or visit The Veranda for upscale Southern cuisine in a beautiful historic setting. 

Finally, we can’t wrap up our Fort Myers dining roundup without mentioning the best places in town to satisfy your sweet tooth! Sample French pastries at Le Macaron or grab an ice cream cone at Scoops on First. And you can’t leave Fort Myers without trying some of the decadent treats of Gulf Coast Fudge Co.

Museums in Fort Myers

Fort Myers is also a great museum town. There are a handful of great museums in Fort Myers, each of which covers a unique subject. To begin, perhaps the most popular museum in Fort Myers is the Edison & Ford Winter Estates. Here you’ll find hundreds of Thomas Edison’s famous inventions, as well as some beautiful botanical gardens. 

Another great Fort Myers museum that is certainly worth checking out is the IMAG History & Science Center. Located right in downtown Fort Myers, this museum has something for the whole family. Some of IMAG’s exhibits include Science on a Sphere, the “SEA-to-See” touch tank, and the Hands-On Hall. If you’re seeking an educational experience that both kids and adults will enjoy, this is your spot. 

Another great natural science museum in Fort Myers is the Calusa Nature Center & Planetarium. You’ll be able to see flora and fauna local to the area when exploring the nature center’s 100+ acres. You can also sign up for special presentations at the planetarium. 

There are plenty of other interesting museums in and around Fort Myers, like the Southwest Florida Military Museum, the Railroad Museum of South Florida, the Bailey-Matthews Shell Museum, and the Southwest Florida Museum of History. 

Events in Fort Myers

You can attend events in Fort Myers all year long, so you should absolutely try to catch one while you’re in town. Whether you’re into art, food, or music, there is definitely a Fort Myers event that you will enjoy. 

To begin, check out Art Walk on the first Friday of every month from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m. in the downtown River District. You can browse downtown galleries, purchase pieces from local artists, and enjoy special activities for the kids. On the third Friday of every month, the River District hosts Music Walk, a celebration of live music of all genres. The event is free to the public, and over a dozen local venues feature talent from around the area. 

Foodies can’t mist the Taste of Lee festival. Held every November, Taste of Lee highlights the area’s local restaurants and takes place in Centennial Park. You’ll find over two dozen food trucks, and you can enjoy live music while you sample some delicious local fare. 

There are a number of other eclectic festivals in Fort Myers and the surrounding area throughout the year, including the Celtic Festival at the end of January, ArtFest and the Edison Festival of Light in February, the Shell Festival in March, and the Fort Myers Boat Show in November.  

Aside from festivals, you can see a temporary art exhibition or a concert at the Sidney & Berne Davis Arts Center, one of the town’s prominent cultural hubs. Finally, if you happen to be in town in March, you can catch a Minnesota Twins or Boston Red Sox spring training game. 

Outdoor Activities in Fort Myers

There are countless outdoor activities that you can enjoy in Fort Myers, so whether you like exploring nature, trying adventurous new sports, or getting out on the water, there is certainly something for you. First off, you can check out one of the various parks in Fort Myers. Centennial Park, Riverside Park, Dunbar Park, and Shady Oaks Park are all excellent places to spend a sunny afternoon. 

You should also explore larger regional and state parks in the Fort Myers area. Lakes Regional Park is a great place for biking and fishing, and you can spot manatees and dolphins at nearby Lovers Key State Park. Speaking of sea cows, lovers of this gentle giant won’t want to miss Lee County Manatee Park, where you can get up close and personal with these lovable creatures. 

If you’re hoping to get out on the water, there are plenty of options for boat rentals in Fort Myers. You can rent a boat or jet ski yourself, or if you’re looking to splurge, charter a yacht for a private cruise. For those who would rather keep it simple, rent a kayak and paddle around Manatee Park, Tropical Point Park, or Lovers Key State Park. 

And for those looking for an adrenaline rush, head out parasailing on the Gulf of Mexico. But if you would rather stay on land, you can rent bikes downtown and explore the streets and parks of Fort Myers. As you can see, there is an outdoor activity for everyone in this town.

Historic Attractions in Fort Myers

If you still don’t know what to do in Fort Myers, consider delving into some of the city’s history. As we mentioned above, the city is home to the Southwest Florida Museum of History. Here you can learn about Florida between the 16th and 19th centuries, Florida during the Civil War, and World War II. 

If you’d like to go even farther back in time, walk down the Calusa Heritage Trail. Here you’ll find a historic archeological site and learn about Calusa culture. Or check out the Mound House on Fort Myers Beach, a site dedicated to this Native American tribe. 

Finally, take in the historic buildings of downtown Fort Myers, like the Old Lee County Courthouse, when strolling around the river district. We recommend taking a walking history tour with True Tours. They give a range of tours, including a River District History Tour, and a Haunted History Tour.  

Family Activities in Fort Myers

If you’re visiting with the kids, there are plenty of things to do to keep everyone entertained. First off, head out on a unique adventure aboard a Spanish galleon with Salty Sam’s Pirate Cruises. Their family cruise is sure to be an experience that the kids won’t soon forget. If a pirate cruise isn’t quite your thing, but you still want to get out on the water, consider signing up for a dolphin and wildlife cruise with Captiva Cruises. 

But if you’d rather stay on land, you still have plenty of activities to enjoy. For example, head to The Shell Factory & Nature Park. Not only can you browse their giant gift shop, but kids can enjoy the park’s petting zoo, zip line, arcade, bumper boats, and more. 

Gator Mike’s Fun Park is another great place to take the kids, especially teenagers. Activities include go-karting, batting cages, axe throwing, paintball, and more. You can even try an aerial ropes course or make your way up a 36-foot climbing wall!

Things to Do Near Fort Myers

If you feel like you already know Fort Myers like the back of your hand, there are plenty of things to do in the cities and islands near Fort Myers, and you don’t have to drive too far out of town to reach wonderful towns and attractions. First off, the beautiful Sanibel Island is just about a half hour’s drive from Fort Myers. If you venture a little further, you’ll reach Captiva Island. 

These beautiful islands are known for their beaches, seashells, and sunsets. You’ll find J.N. “Ding” Darling National Wildlife Refuge on Sanibel Island, which is a great place to go bird watching and fishing. Or head over to Cayo Costa State Park, a remote getaway that is only accessible by boat. Here you can explore untouched mangrove swamps, oak-palm hammocks, pine forests, and 9 miles of untouched beaches.

If you’re hoping to explore nearby towns down the coast, consider visiting Bonita Springs or Naples. These Gulf Coast beach towns offer the perfect getaway if you’re hoping to get a change of scenery. Or head north and stop in Punta Gorda, Venice Beach, and Siesta Key for some more beautiful beaches. 

For those who are willing to venture all the way up to Sarasota (about an hour and fifteen minutes by car), you’ll find endless shopping and dining options, as well as various museums and the Mote Aquarium. Consider checking out the nearby St. Armand’s Circle, which is home to a number of lovely shops, a variety of restaurants, and world-class ice cream and fudge.

Panhandle

We’re going to start our Florida foodie list way up in the Florida Panhandle, where we’ll be visiting the northern towns of Apalachicola, Tallahassee, and Santa Rosa Beach. 

Apalachicola

There’s no better place to begin than what is perhaps the most famous oyster town in Florida: Apalachicola. Historically, Apalachicola has produced 90% of Florida’s oysters. Locales like Up the Creek Raw Bar and The Station Raw Bar are great spots to get your oyster fix. 

However, there are plenty of options for the members of your crew who prefer other types of seafood. Check out The Owl Cafe, Hole in the Wall Seafood, and Apalachicola Seafood Grill for local classics like crab cakes, shrimp, and key lime pie. And if you need a morning pick-me-up, head to Apalacichola Chocolate & Coffee Company for homemade pastries or Cafe Con Leche to try Venezuelan coffee and arepas.  

Santa Rosa Beach

The lovely town of Santa Rosa Beach is another panhandle spot teeming with great food. There are, of course, plenty of great seafood joints, like Shunk Gulley Oyster Bar, Fish Out of Water, and Vue on 30A. The Perfect Pig offers an excellent mix of seafood and southern cuisine. 

And if you’re looking for a scenic seaside setting for your dining experience, check out The Beach House or Sunset Bay Cafe. Finally, you can’t leave Santa Rosa Beach without trying some of its spectacular local ice cream. We recommend Pecan Jacks, Blue Mountain Beach Creamery, and Sunrise Ice Cream & Candy Co. 

Tallahassee

Believe it or not, this college town (and the state’s capital city) has a number of great eateries. If you’re looking for something a little more upscale in Tallahassee, head to Savour or Sage. There are also a number of good restaurants offering southern cuisine, like Table 23 and Lucilla. 

The Edison is a great go-to eatery offering both indoor and outdoor seating options and classic, yet quality, appetizers and entrees. Along the same lines, we recommend Backwoods Crossing if you’re looking for innovative New American cuisine made with local ingredients. 

Northern Florida

Let’s shoot across the state to the Atlantic Coast to visit Amelia Island, Jacksonville, and St. Augustine!

Amelia Island

You can find a wide variety on the ever-so-charming Amelia Island. If you’re in the mood for Asian food, head over to Wicked Bao in Fernandina Beach for ramen, kimchi fried rice, and more. For a more upscale dining experience, you can head right down the street to enjoy exquisite French cuisine at Le Clos, while David’s Restaurant & Lounge is another high-end eatery where you can find exceptional seafood and steak. 

Also in the area is España Restaurant, which specializes in paella and general Spanish and Portuguese fare. But if you’re in the mood for casual seafood, check out Timoti’s Seafood Shak for fish tacos or lobster rolls. 

Jacksonville

There is no shortage of delicious seafood in the self-proclaimed shrimp capital of Florida! Some of the best seafood joints in the city include Blue Fish Restaurant and Oyster Bar, The Fish Company, and Julington Creek Fish Camp. 

But while plenty of Jacksonville restaurants serve local seafood, you can also find a wide variety of other types of food. In fact, there are a number of locales serving varied Asian cuisines, like Kazu Japanese Restaurant (sushi), Kim’s Korean BBQ Restaurant, and Green Papaya (Thai cuisine). Be sure to check out Blue Bamboo for a unique fusion of Cantonese dishes and Southern comfort food. 

St. Augustine

St. Augustine is teeming with diverse cuisine and interesting restaurants. Adventurous eaters will want to check out places like Llama Restaurant (Peruvian cuisine), Conch House Restaurant (Caribbean-inspired dishes), and Columbia Restaurant (Spanish and Columbian food). Another unique eatery is Prohibition Kitchen, which offers farm-to-table dishes and hand-spun milkshakes. 

If you’re in the mood for something a little bit more mainstream, we recommend Sunset Grille for casual, local fare, as well as Raintree Restaurant, where you can find great steak and seafood. Collage Restaurant is another great choice if you’re looking for an offering of global cuisine and great wine. Finally, we would be remiss if we didn’t mention Schooner’s Seafood House, a St. Augustine stable that specializes in seafood platters. 

Central Florida

Let’s head a bit farther down south to Central Florida, where you’ll find some of the best foodie towns in the Sunshine State. 

Mount Dora

Located just over 30 miles from Orlando you will find the quaint town of Mt. Dora. And believe it or not, there are plenty of outstanding restaurants packed into this Central Florida city. Goblin Market is the one place you truly can’t miss if you are in town. Its unique aesthetic and consistently good food are perfect for a family dinner, anniversary celebration, or really any occasion.

Cheese lovers (and who doesn’t love cheese?) will gawk over Cheese to Share, which specializes in cheese boards and fondue. Finally, you’ll get one of the most scenic dining experiences in town at Pisces Rising, where you can enjoy seafood, steak, and Caribbean-inspired dishes. Be sure to make your reservation around sunset! 

Orlando 

Orlando has certainly made a name for itself on the Florida food scene. In 2021, it was named the No. 1 best foodie city for couples, something that comes as no surprise to us. Orlando is teeming with chic restaurants that are suitable for couples, singles, families, or really any type of diner. 

One of our top picks is Soco, where you will find creative twists on classic Southern cuisine in a warm yet sophisticated setting. But no matter the type of food you may be craving, you’re sure to find it in Orlando. Check out Domu for outstanding ramen, Capa for Spanish cuisine, Kabooki Sushi for Japanese fare, or Enzo’s on the Lake for Italian classics. 

Tampa

Tampa also earned a spot on the previously mentioned “best foodie towns for couples” list. Ringing in at No. 4, Tampa’s food scene is diverse and exciting, and you can find just about any type of food you can imagine. We recommend that you try the Native American and Florida cuisine fusion served at Ulele. If you have something to celebrate (or if you just need a drink), order a sangria pitcher at one of the biggest Spanish restaurants in the world, Columbia Restaurant. 

For high-quality New American fusion, check out Rooster & the Till, where you can try various inventive small plates on their tasting menu. Another interesting spot is Noble Crust, where you’ll find a combination of what are arguably two of the world’s best cuisines: Italian and Southern. 

Winter Park

This Central Florida city, which is often overshadowed by nearby Orlando, has an impressive selection of great eateries. If you’re in the mood for Mexican, you have a number of delicious options, including Hunger Street Tacos and Agave Azul. Umi is a great spot for Japanese fusion, and if you are a fan of Asian cuisine, we also recommend checking out Thai Place. 

Believe it or not, Winter Park is an excellent destination for vegans and vegetarians. Winter Park Biscuit Company serves up biscuits and sandwiches that you simply won’t believe are vegan. You also have to check out Ethos Vegan Kitchen, where you’ll find plant-based (and delicious) brunch options, sandwiches, entrees, and more. 

Southern Florida

Time to venture down to Southern Florida for our next three foodie towns: Jupiter, Miami, and Naples!

Jupiter

Depending on what type of food you are in the mood for, you have a number of options available to you in Jupiter. You may have heard of The Woods, the upscale sports bar owned by Tiger Woods. This is a great place to grab a happy hour drink, enjoy a delicious dinner, or have Sunday brunch. 

Seafood lovers should check out Little Moi’s Food Shack. Don’t be thrown off by its casual setting, because the Food Shack has some of the best fresh catch seafood in Jupiter. But if you’re looking for a more refined setting (and food that’s equally as delicious), check out The Beacon. This waterfront restaurant is located at the Jupiter Inlet and provides beautiful views of the Jupiter Lighthouse, as well as delicious steak, seafood, and more. 

Miami

It should come as no surprise that you’ll find some of the best food in Florida in Miami. In fact, Miami has landed itself a No. 3 spot on a list ranking the best foodie towns in the entire country. And we have to start by mentioning one of Miami’s most emblematic locales: Joe’s Stone Crab. You must, of course, order crab, but save room for dessert, as their key lime pie is outstanding. 

If you’re itching to try some of Miami’s famous Cuban food, be sure to make a reservation at Versailles. While they offer plenty of quality entrees, they are perhaps best known for their sandwiches. Finally, Miami offers plenty of quality international cuisine. Some stand-out restaurants include Ghee (Indian), La Mar (Peruvian), Mandolin Aegean Bistro (Greek), Makoto (Japanese), and Quinto La Huella (Uruguayan). 

Naples

Now let’s head over to the Gulf Coast to explore the best restaurants in Naples. You can find a wide variety of restaurant options in this coastal town. Try high-quality French cuisine at Bleu Provence or delicious Peruvian fare at Lima Restaurant (don’t leave before trying one of their signature pisco sours). 

Other restaurants with a variety of international foods include Van Van Cuban Cafe, Mediterrano, and Lamoraga. If you’re looking to get your seafood fix, check out Sea Salt for delicious and modern seafood dishes, And when it comes to surf and turf, we recommend trying T-Michaels.

Key Largo

The Lazy Lobster Seafood Restaurant has a lovely outdoor dining area, and Hobo’s Cafe is one of the most authentic seafood restaurants on the island. If you’d like to change it up from seafood, grab a pizza at C&C Wood Fire Eats, or treat yourself to a slice of key lime pie at Blonde Giraffe Key Lime Pie Factory. 

Key West 

If you make the trek all the way down to Key West, you will find that delicious restaurants abound. You will certainly be able to sense the island’s proximity to Cuba at places like Cuban Coffee Queen and 5 Brothers Grocery and Sandwich Shop. 

If you’re looking for something a little more upscale, Little Pearl offers outstanding local seafood, as well as an impressive wine list. Finally, beer lovers should check out First Flight Island Restaurant and Brewery (take advantage of their daily happy hour from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.).

We’re starting out our list with the most important meal of the day: breakfast (or brunch, if you’re not such an early riser). The following breakfast and brunch spots are perfect for grabbing a classic American breakfast or enjoying a slow weekend brunch. 

First Watch

Our first Sarasota breakfast joint is First Watch, which is located right downtown. However, the restaurant has various additional locations in the greater Sarasota area. Located right on bustling Main Street, First Watch “specializes in both traditional and innovative creations all freshly prepared to order”. 

In fact, this restaurant has been granted the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Readers’ Choice award for “Best Breakfast in Manatee and Sarasota”. While you are certainly getting quality at First Watch, you will also appreciate quantity. Portion sizes are generous, so come with an appetite or be prepared to share. 

Some of their specialties include lemon ricotta pancakes, eggs benedict, and the classic omelet. The restaurant often offers seasonal specialties as well, like their pumpkin pancake breakfast in the fall. Opening hours are 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day of the week. 

Fresh Start Cafe

Located in Laurel Park, Fresh Start Cafe is another great place to get your breakfast and brunch fix. The restaurant offers a quaint indoor cafe setting as well as outdoor seating options. The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m every day except Wednesday.

Here you can enjoy classics, like an eggs/bacon/pancake breakfast or french toast, or order some more unique dishes. Try a breakfast burrito, bagel & lox, or shakshuka (Israeli poached eggs in tomato sauce). Fresh Start Cafe also has a wide selection of frittatas, or you have the option to create your own. 

Millie’s

A Sarasota staple for over three decades, Millie’s offers breakfast and brunch classics. It’s one of those places that you know you can’t go wrong. Located just a twenty-minute drive from downtown Sarasota, Millie’s is your traditional American comfort food joint with a charming dining setting. 

Some of Millie’s staples include eggs florentine and biscuits and gravy. If you prefer your breakfast on the sweeter side, try the German apple pancake. Millie’s is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 

Toasted Mango Cafe

You can visit the Toasted Mango Cafe at two Sarasota locations: right downtown or on beautiful Siesta Key. This unassuming breakfast joint is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day of the week. 

Their extensive breakfast menu is certain to have something for everyone, with options including eggs benedict, omelets, corned beef hash, waffles, french toast, pancakes, breakfast wraps, and more. If you can’t make it out until later in the day, the Toasted Mango Cafe also has a great selection of lunch options, including wraps, sandwiches, and salads.

Lunch

If you’re looking for a place to grab a casual lunch, look no further than these Sarasota recommendations. And forget about your average soup and salad combo. Sarasota has plenty of unique and international lunch cuisine to choose from. 

Bitia’s Taqueria 

Bitia’s Taqueria is your Sarasota spot to enjoy a quick and casual lunch with a twist. Located just three miles from downtown Sarasota, this Salvadorian restaurant specializes in one of the country’s most emblematic dishes: papusas. Papusas, similar to a Venezuelan or Colombian arepa, are cornmeal flatbreads stuffed with a variety of fillings. 

Try a papusa de chicarron y queso (pork and cheese papusa), or one of the restaurant’s other regional specialties. Bitia’s tacos, quesadillas, tamales, and burritos are all worth trying. The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Mondays. 

Lila

Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about our vegetarian readers. Located right on Main Street, you’ll find plant-based Sarasota eatery Lila, which has a classy indoor dining room and outdoor seating options as well. Here you can enjoy classic American dishes made with organic ingredients, including plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. 

Lila’s menu includes plenty of salads and sandwiches (like the mushroom burger or the tofu Rueben). But don’t worry, meat-eaters have their own options at Lila, like the grass-fed bison burger or Faroe Island salmon cakes. The restaurant opens for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10:30 a.m to 4 p.m. on Saturday. 

Made

Perhaps the best place to sit down for a relaxing lunch in Sarasota is Made. Their lovely outdoor patio, extensive lunch menu, and delicious dishes are sure to please. Plus, Made is conveniently located in downtown Sarasota, right off of Main Street. 

There is something on the menu for everyone at Made, like mac-and-cheese, salads, burgers, and more. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the chicken & french toast or BLFTA (bacon, lettuce, fried green tomatoes, and avocado). Made is open from 11:30 to 2:30 for lunch from Tuesday to Friday and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sundays. 

Pho Cali

If you’re looking for a fancy dining experience, perhaps Pho Cali isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for consistently delicious and authentic food, then you’ve come to the right place. Also located in downtown Sarasota, you can dine in or carry out at this traditional Vietnamese locale. 

Not surprisingly, Pho Cali’s specialty is pho, which is a Vietnamese soup made with rice noodles and plenty of additional ingredients. You can order yours with beef or chicken broth, and additional ingredient options include brisket, chicken, and mixed vegetables. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11 to 3:30, Monday through Saturday.

Happy Hour

Hoping to grab some drinks with coworkers or enjoy a cocktail after a long day on the beach? Well, we have the perfect Sarasota happy hour spots for you. 

Boca Sarasota

Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. you can enjoy happy hour at Boca Sarasota. This industrial-chic downtown restaurant has the perfect vibes for relaxing with a cocktail and some appetizers. 

Aside from their impressive wine list, you can explore Boca’s house cocktails, like the Blue Lagoon, Seasonal Spritz, or Watermelon Collins. There are also plenty of starters to choose from, including zucchini fries and fried green tomatoes. Plus, you’ll love the restaurant’s outdoor patio seating area.  

State Street Eating House + Cocktails

State Street Eating House + Cocktails is the perfect location for cocktail connoisseurs. If you’re just looking to grab a drink, head to the Lounge, where you can enjoy happy hour specials from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. 

The menu includes almost twenty custom cocktails, as well as four “high roller” cocktails ($50+). Some of State Street’s most intriguing cocktails include “Fizzy Endings” (empress gin, egg white, cream, lavender, citrus, and soda) and “Tea Slice” (whiskey, hibiscus tea, lemon, and alchermes liqueur). 

Shakespeare’s

If you’re more of a beer drinker than a cocktail connoisseur, look no further than Shakespeare’s English Pub. Self-proclaimed to be “Sarasota’s premier craft beer restaurant”, Shakespeare’s never disappoints. You can expect to see around 20 beers on tap at any given point, as well as more than a dozen types of bottled beer, both domestic and international. 

While you’re grabbing a brew, enjoy some of Shakespeare’s irresistible appetizers, like the spicy stuffed mushrooms, popcorn shrimp, or loaded fries. You’ll find Shakespeare’s less than a ten-minute drive from downtown Sarasota. 

Siegfried’s

Now that we’ve seen Sarasota’s English pub, let’s head to a German beer garden: Siegfried’s. Open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Wednesday through Sunday, the beer garden is the perfect setting for grabbing a casual drink with some friends. Here you can enjoy German and domestic beers, both on draft and bottled, as well as unique German wines. 

Perhaps one of the best parts of Siegfried’s (aside from the quaint garden area and incredible beer) is their selection of authentic German eats. Out in the beer garden, you can order a German pretzel, German pepper sausage, or imported meats and cheeses. Patrons with a sweet tooth will love the homemade cakes and traditional applestrudel.

Date Night

Whether it’s a first date or a special anniversary dinner, we’ve rounded up the most romantic dining options in Sarasota. 

Mélange

Another Main Street staple, Mélange is the perfect place to go if you’re looking to impress a first date. The restaurant is dedicated to “the exploration of food and flavors from different regions around the world”, so you’re sure to find some creative and unique dishes when you visit. Plus, Mélange’s modern dining setting is sophisticated yet casual. 

House favorites like tuna tartare, rabbit tacos, and duck brie crepes are just a few of the menu’s many inventive dishes. The house cocktails, in the $10-$12 price range, are also a must. Mélange is open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday from 5:30 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

Indigenous

Located in a charming yet classy repurposed home, Indigenous is dedicated to sustainability and “creating a better food system”. That’s why you’ll find such a seasonal menu at the restaurant, which changes on a regular basis. The restaurant’s farm-to-table philosophy ensures that you’re getting only the freshest (and most delicious) ingredients. 

However, you’ll always be likely to find fresh seafood on the menu, as well as plenty of other entrees. Don’t pass up on dessert: try the decadent Cuban expresso ice cream or an irresistible lemon bar. Indigenous is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 pm.m to 8:30 p.m.

Ophelia’s on the Bay

If you’re in the mood for a romantic waterfront dining experience, look no further than Ophelia’s on the Bay. This restaurant has been a Sarasota classic for over three decades, and for good reason. While there are meat options on the menu, it goes without saying that Ophelia’s on the Bay is the perfect place to bring a seafood lover. 

Yellowtail snapper, crab cakes, and sea scallops are just a few of the menu’s many delicious seafood options. Ophelia’s on the Bay has been rated “Best Waterfront Restaurant” and “Most Romantic Restaurant” by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Reader’s Choice Awards, making it the perfect place to treat your special someone. The restaurant is open for dinner nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

Sage

If you’re celebrating an anniversary or special occasion, Sage is a great place to splurge. This sophisticated restaurant (which also has a spectacular rooftop bar), offers unique creations with seasonal ingredients and an international touch. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Vegetarians, meat-eaters, and seafood lovers alike have their fair share of delicious options at Sage. Interestingly enough, the majority of dishes are also gluten-free. The menu is seasonal, but you can expect to find creative dishes like smoked scallops with green garbanzo hummus, Thai bouillabaisse, or grilled and roasted quail.

Family Meal

Finally, if you’re heading out with the whole crew, we have a few places up our sleeve that both kids and adults will enjoy. 

Eleni’s Pizza Works

Just a 15-minute drive north from downtown Sarasota you’ll find Eleni’s Pizza Works. This family-friendly eatery offers not only great pizza but also incredible stromboli, as well as delicious subs and wraps. If you’re looking for healthier options, the restaurant also offers a number of salad options. 

And of course, you can’t go wrong with one of the restaurant’s signature pies. Creations like the Happy Greek pizza, the Shrimp Scampi pizza, and Eleni’s Spinachine pizza are just a few of the unique pizza options offered at Eleni’s Pizza Works. You can head here for lunch or dinner, and opening hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. 

Michael’s on East

Located just south of downtown Sarasota is Michael’s on East, a Sarasota restaurant that has been offering quality meals for over thirty years. This spot is the ideal place to celebrate a family celebration, be it a graduation, a birthday, or whatever else the occasion. Michael’s on East is only open for dinner, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. 

This locale, while definitely on the classier side, is sure to have something for everyone in the family, as the restaurant has quite an extensive menu. Entrees range from seafood (snapper, seabass, and swordfish) to pasta dishes and steaks. More adventurous meat options include duck, pork chops, veal chops, and lamb. 

Old Salty Dog

The Old Salty Dog actually has three locations: one on Siesta Key, one in Venice, and one conveniently located right outside of downtown Sarasota, in City Island. This is the perfect spot for a casual meal, be it lunch or dinner, with the family. The Old Salty Dog has numerous sandwich and entree options, but what they’re really known for is, you guessed it, their hot dogs. 

You can’t leave the Old Salty Dog without trying one of their signature dogs, like the famous “Salty Dog”, which is dipped in batter and deep-fried. While perhaps not the best location for the health-conscious, the Old Salty Dog is worth the cheat day. The City Island location is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday to Sunday. 

Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar

We couldn’t talk about good family restaurants in Sarasota without mentioning Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar. But don’t let the oysters scare you (or your kids) away. Phillippi Creek has an extensive menu, which seafood lovers will especially enjoy. 

While the restaurant is known for its oysters, you can’t go wrong with Phillippi Creek fried and baked seafood platters either. And be sure to order a round of hush puppies for the table. Phillippi Creek is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

Tarpon Springs

Our first spot, Tarpon Springs, can be found about 30 miles northwest of Tampa, on the central Gulf Coast. Tarpon Springs is on the list of the National Register of Historic Places, and the town’s historic district certainly doesn’t disappoint. Enjoy the old-fashioned brick streets while browsing shops and taking in 19th-century architecture. 

The town has also been deemed the “sponge capital of the world”, so you have to head down to the Sponge Docks at some point during your stay. In fact, it was the area’s Greek immigrants that built the town’s sponge industry, and Tarpon Springs still has a rich Greek community today. Enjoy the town’s Greek culture and heritage by visiting a Greek restaurant, like Hella’s or Mykonos, where you can try favorites like saganaki, spanakopita, and souvlaki. 

And since you’re in Florida, you should obviously explore the town’s beaches. But for those looking for more cultural activities, check out the Leepa-Rattner Museum of Art or the Tarpon Springs Performing Arts and Cultural Center. 

Dunedin

Another charming Florida Gulf Coast town, Dunedin can be found just over 20 miles from St. Petersburg. Dunedin is actually one of the oldest towns on the west coast of the state, and it offers plenty of coastline and a historic downtown area. 

In fact, there are two beautiful state parks in the area that you can’t miss if you’re in town: Honeymoon Island State Park and Caladesi Island State Park. Honeymoon Island State Park can be reached by car via the Honeymoon Island Causeway, and from there you can catch a ferry over to Caladesi Island State Park, which is one of the few untouched islands along the Gulf Coast. 

But for those who prefer to stay on the mainland, there are plenty of ways to keep busy. You can check out the Dunedin Historical Museum, stroll around the quaint downtown, or tee up at the Dunedin Golf Club. Baseball fans can visit the TD Ballpark, which serves as the spring training location for the Toronto Blue Jays.

Mt. Dora

Located in central Florida, you’ll find Mt. Dora a little over 30 miles northwest of Orlando. This lovely town offers plenty of attractions, one of its main visits being Grantham Point Park. Here you will find the 35-foot Mt. Dora Lighthouse, one of the last remaining freshwater lighthouses in the state. 

Mt. Dora is fittingly located on Dora Lake, and the area is surrounded by other inland lakes, like Lake Eustis, Lake Harris, and Lake Apopka. The picturesque Dora Canal connects the area’s lakes. Take a boat ride through the Harris Chain of Lakes and spot local wildlife, like herons, turtles, and perhaps even an alligator. 

Once you’re back on land, head into downtown Mt. Dora, where you can check out historic buildings, stop into local shops, and enjoy the town’s diverse dining options. Or pay a visit to one of the town’s various museums and galleries, like the Modernism Museum, the Mt. Dora Historical Society Museum, or the Mt. Dora Center for the Arts.

Anna Maria Island

This Florida Gulf Coast barrier island is located a little over 20 miles from Sarasota. Anna Maria Island is ideal for beach lovers, as it has some incredible stretches of coastline. Head to the Beach at Bean Point for some peace and quiet, Manatee Beach for fun with the whole family, and Coquina Beach for sunbathing and swimming. But the fun in the sun doesn’t end there: the island also boasts other beautiful beaches like Holmes Beach, Bradenton Beach, and Cortez Beach. 

Once you’re ready to take a break from the sun and sand, you can check out the spectacular views from the Bridge Street Pier (also known as the Bradenton Beach Pier). Be sure to try some of the delicious seafood while you’re in the area. Right next to the pier is Bridge Street, also known as the Historic Old Town District. Browse the area’s shops, grab a bite to eat, and enjoy wandering around this unique downtown area. 

Punta Gorda

Punta Gorda is located right off the Gasparilla Sound/Charlotte Harbor. This peaceful town is an excellent visit for nature lovers. First off, the Charlotte Harbor Environmental Center is located just south of the town. This free nature park offers educational tours and over four miles of hiking trails. Animal lovers should check out the Peace River Wildlife Center, the Octagon Wildlife Sanctuary and Rehabilitation Center, and the Babcock Ranch Preserve. 

Some more of the town’s unique attractions include Fisherman’s Village, an open-air shopping and dining center near a picturesque marina, and Alligator Bay Distillers, a can’t-miss for rum lovers. The area also has a number of educational visits and museums, like the Blanchard House Museum, which highlights the African Americans’ contributions to the progress of Southwest Florida, and the Muscle Car City Museum, which is an excellent attraction for car buffs. 

The downtown is also home to a favorite local Farmers Market every Saturday morning!

Englewood

Just around 30 miles south of Sarasota you’ll find Englewood, a lovely little town on Lemon Bay. Englewood offers a relaxing getaway for people hoping to enjoy some beautiful Florida landscapes. The town has various parks, like Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center, Indian Mound Park, and Cedar Point Environmental Park. And located less than five miles inland is the Myakka State Forest, which is excellent for bird and wildlife viewing. 

In less than a 10-minute drive from Englewood, you will find yourself on Manasota Key. This is where you can explore some of the area’s best beaches, like Englewood Beach. This spacious beach has great facilities (parking included) and is conveniently located near a variety of dining options. At the far south end of the key is Stump Pass Beach State Park, where you can enjoy white sand beaches and search for shells and shark’s teeth. Or cast a line and try your luck at catching some flounder, trout, or snapper. 

Venice

Venice is another charming Florida Gulf Coast getaway, located about 20 miles from Sarasota. It has some of the best beaches in the state and is in fact a premier location for shark tooth hunting. Venice is actually known as the Shark Tooth Capital of the World, and Caspersen Beach, which you will find just three miles from downtown, is one of the best shelling beaches in the area. Or try your luck at finding a shark’s tooth on Venice Beach, located just a short walk from the historic downtown district. 

While you certainly can’t miss the area’s beaches during your stay, there are plenty of other things to do while you’re in town. Downtown Venice dates back a century, and its historic buildings, beautiful parks, and diverse dining and shopping options offer something for everyone. If you happen to be in town on a Saturday morning, check out the Venice Farmers Market. Finally, art lovers can peruse the town’s numerous galleries.

Crystal River

Known as the Manatee Capital of the World, Crystal River is best known for being a refuge for these gentle giants. You can get up close and personal with manatees at Crystal River Wildlife Refuge: it is best to visit during the winter season (from mid-November to the end of March) if you want to take a dip with the hundreds of West Indian manatees that seek refuge in the warm waters of Crystal River. 

What people may not know is that downtown Crystal River has a number of shops, restaurants, and bars. You can find all of this at just a stone’s throw from the waterfront. On top of this, Crystal River offers great fishing, golfing, hiking, and more for the most active visitors. Crystal River is located about an hour and a half north of Tampa. 

Islamorada 

Head all the way to the southern tip of the Sunshine State to find Islamorada, which is actually made up of six islands: Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, and Lower Matecumbe Key, as well as the offshore islands of Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key. This area is a perfect destination for fishing aficionados, as this area is considered the Sport-Fishing Capital of the World. In fact, this is where backcountry sport fishing and saltwater fly fishing were pioneered. 

But aside from fishing charters, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy in Islamorada. The area boasts spectacular coral reefs, great for snorkeling and scuba diving, and you can even swim with dolphins at Theater of the Sea. Divers can also check out the History of Diving Museum. Or hop on a boat and head to the Alligator Reef Lighthouse, a skeleton lighthouse located 4 nautical miles east of Indian Key Historic State Park.

Cedar Key

Cedar Key is an island city located on the northwest Florida Gulf Coast. One of its highlights is the Cedar Keys National Wildlife Refuge. The wildlife refuge, which was established in 1929, consists of 13 offshore islands and serves as a protected zone for the area’s native birds. The refuge is a great area for fishing, photography, and wildlife viewing. 

Cedar Key is also a great visit for history buffs. Its quaint downtown (Cedar Key has less than 1,000 year-round residents!) offers unique shops, galleries, and restaurants, as well as two historical museums. Some other historic attractions include an abandoned pencil factory and the old cemetery on Atsena Otie Key. 

If you’re just hoping to soak up some Florida rays, you have a couple of options. While there is a small stretch of sand near the marina on Cedar Key, you can charter a boat to take you to a more secluded, intimate beach on one of the area’s surrounding islands. 

Winter Park

Winter Park is a neat town located just 20 minutes from Orlando, which is sure to provide an excellent cultural excursion if you happen to be in the area. It has various art museums, including the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, the Albin Polasek Museum and Sculpture Gardens, and the Cornell Fine Arts Museum. It also has a number of history museums, like the Casa Feliz Historic Home Museum and the Winter Park History Museum. 

Winter Park is also a great shopping destination. The Park Avenue Shopping District offers fine dining and sophisticated shops, and each Saturday morning the town hosts a farmer’s market at the old train depot. Finally, check out some of the town’s beautiful gardens, like the Mead Botanical Garden and the Kraft Azalea Garden.

Boca Grande/Gasparilla Island

Boca Grande, which is located on beautiful Gasparilla Island, can be found just northwest of Fort Myers. The area is well-known for its prime fishing conditions, but there is plenty more to do on Gasparilla Island. Boca Grande beaches are beautiful, white sand stretches of coast with crystalline waters. And don’t miss the island’s two lighthouses: the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse and the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum (the latter of which is located in Gasparilla Island State Park). 

Cayo Costa State Park is just a short boat ride away from Gasparilla Island. This pristine island has miles of untouched beaches and serves to protect the Charlotte Harbor Estuary. Visitors can enjoy fishing, biking, hiking, snorkeling, scuba diving, and more. If you’re lucky, you may even spot a sea turtle or a manatee.  

St. Augustine

St. Augustine, which stakes its claim as the oldest city in the United States, is one of the most historic visits on our list of the best small towns in Florida. It is known for its Spanish architecture and Castillo de San Marcos Fort, which is actually a national monument. You can also check out the town’s historic lighthouse and maritime museum. Suwannee River State Park

Henderson Beach State Park

There is a dump station at the campground, along with climate-controlled restrooms, shower facilities, washers, dryers, and vending machines. Aside from visiting the beautiful sand dunes that the park is known for, Henderson Beach State Park is also an excellent destination for fishing fanatics, hikers, and those looking to enjoy the sun and sand of the Gulf Coast. The park is located near Destin, Florida, which is one of the state’s most popular northern destinations thanks to its emerald green waters, sprawling golf courses, and world-famous fishing reputation. 

Grayton Beach State Park 

If enjoying the beautiful Florida coastline is what you’re looking for, Grayton Beach State Park camping is just what you need. With one of the most beautiful beaches of any of the campgrounds on our list, this park boasts 59 campsites equipped with water and electricity. Some sites have sewer hookups, and you can camp with either a tent or an RV (maximum RV length 40 feet). You can practically wake up right on the beach for just $30 per night. 

What makes this campground so special is its proximity to the beautiful Grayton Beach, with its white sand and crystalline Gulf waters. When you’re not lounging on the beach, you can ride bikes around the 4.5 mile trail that winds through the surrounding forest. Or paddle canoes or kayaks around the 100-acre Western Lake, which is a picturesque dune lake surrounded by the park’s natural environment. 

Anastasia State Park 

Located on the north end of beautiful Anastasia Island, this 1,600 acre state park has an especially large camping area, with 139 tent/RV sites.  Entrance to the park costs $8 per multi-occupant vehicle and $4 for single-occupant vehicles, and Anastasia State Park campsites cost $28 per night. All sites have electricity, water, a picnic table, an in-ground grill, and a campfire ring. Sites are located a short walk or bike from the beach, and some are even paved.

One of the best parts about Anastasia State Park camping is your proximity to St. Augustine and St. Augustine Beach. Take a quick trip into downtown St. Augustine (which is located less than three miles from the park) and visit the historic Castillo San Marcos fort. And located right next to the park is the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum. About three miles south of the camping area you will find St. Augustine Beach, a picturesque Atlantic coast getaway. 

Central Florida and Coasts

Blue Springs State Park

Perhaps the best spot on our list for manatee lovers, Blue Springs State Park camping offers a refreshing and serene getaway. The park has 51 tent/RV campsites, each of which is equipped with a picnic table, water, electricity, and a grill. The campground has a dump site for RVs and pets are welcome. Sites cost $24 per night. 

Blue Springs State Park is perhaps best known for its abundance of manatees. It is estimated that there are over 500 of these gentle giants meandering the warm waters of Blue Spring, and visitors can spot the animals by hiking along the spring run or the 4.5-mile Pine Island Trail. 

Other activities in the area include a St. Johns River boat cruise, paddling, swimming, and even scuba diving. However, all water activities are prohibited during the winter season (approximately November through March) in order to provide a safe refuge for the manatees. Subsequently, the best time to spot manatees is during the coldest months of the year. 

Wekiwa Springs State Park

Located some 20 minutes north of Orlando, Wekiwa Springs State Park is another refreshing Central Florida getaway. Set up camp at one of the park’s 60 sites, which offer water, electricity, a fire ring, and a picnic table. Some sites have a sewage hookup for RV campers, but there is also a dump station at the campground. You can find restrooms and showers conveniently located near the sites, and Wekiwa Springs State Park camping costs just $24 per night. If you prefer a more rustic (and affordable) option, primitive sites cost just $5 per person per night. 

Wekiwa Springs is perhaps most famous for its emerald-clear fresh waters, where visitors can fish, paddle, snorkel, and swim. But if you’re looking for alternative activities on land, you have plenty of options. Bike around the off-road bicycle path, head out for a hike, or saddle up and go horseback riding along the park’s eight miles of riding trails. 

Hillsborough River State Park

For those who enjoy water adventures, Hillsborough River State Park camping won’t let you down. Hillsborough River has some of the only class II rapids in Florida, so grab your canoe or kayak and paddle downstream. There are 112 sites at the campground, most of which offer electricity hookups. All sites are equipped with water, a fire ring, and a picnic table, and there are various restroom and shower facilities located around the campground. Sites cost $24 per night, and the campground allows pets, as long as they are leashed. 

Aside from paddling down the rapids, visitors can bike and hike the park’s various trails, fish in the river, and view diverse wildlife. If you would like to get out on the water, be sure to bring your own canoe or kayak, as rentals are not currently offered at the park. 

Rainbow Springs State Park

Rainbow Springs is another Central Florida oasis. With its sapphire-blue waters and beautiful gardens, this park is the perfect inland getaway. The park’s campground is located a few miles from the main spring area, and all sites have electricity, water, and sewer hookups. The sites are suitable for both tent and RV camping, with a max RV length of 103 feet! The Rainbow Spring State Park camping area is equipped with a store, restrooms, shower and laundry facilities, and a playground, and the campground is pet-friendly. 

If you would like to paddle down the springs, you can rent a canoe or kayak at the campground’s store. You can also swim, snorkel, and tube in designated areas (tubing is only allowed on the weekends from April until the end of September). While you’re not enjoying the clear blue waters of Rainbow Springs, stroll through the park’s beautiful gardens, pack a picnic, and keep an eye out for native birds and wildlife.  

Southern Florida and The Keys

Myakka River State Park

As you head farther down south, you can find some excellent Florida state parks that are sure to provide you with the perfect setting for a camping getaway, starting with Myakka River State Park. The park is located at just a half hour’s drive from Sarasota and is in fact one of Florida’s largest state parks, spanning some 37,000 acres. It is also one of Florida’s oldest parks, and the area is known for its beautiful river, lake, and wetlands. 

Myakka River State Park camping is varied, and the park offers three separate campgrounds with a total of around 90 campsites. Sites are equipped with electricity, water, a picnic table, and a fire ring, and select sites have a sewer hookup, though the park has a designated dump site as well. Myakka River State Park camping costs $26 per night, but if you are fine roughing it, you can set up camp at one of the park’s primitive sites, which only cost only $5 per person per night. There are six primitive campgrounds located along the park’s hiking trails. 

The park offers plenty of water activities for visitors, including boating, fishing, and paddling. If you would rather check out the park by foot, explore the 38.9-mile hiking loop, or feel free to bring your horse and set out on the 12 miles of designated riding trails. 

Oscar Scherer State Park

Oscar Scherer State Park is located about six miles from Venice, and this nature preserve offers an unexpected oasis among buildings and pavement. Nestled between U.S. Route 41 and Interstate 75, the park is an excellent birding destination, as it is an invaluable refuge for the Florida scrub-jay. Visitors can also enjoy activities like biking, fishing, hiking, swimming, and paddling (though canoe and kayak rentals are currently unavailable). 

The park has 104 tent/RV sites, all of which have water, electricity, a picnic table, and a grill. The campground is equipped with restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities as well. Oscar Scherer State Park camping costs $26 per night, and you should note that the maximum RV length is just 36 feet.  

Highlands Hammock State Park

Heading even further inland we will find Highlands Hammock State Park, the state park with the greatest quantity of rare and endemic species in all of Florida. This old-growth cypress swamp is an excellent place to view wading birds, raptors, migratory birds, songbirds, and other wildlife, such as otters, deer, alligators, and more. Visitors can also bike around the park’s 3-mile paved loop, hike around one of the park’s nine trails, or take a guided tram tour to explore the park and its fauna. 

Highlands Hammock State Park camping is great for both tent and RV camping. Each site has water and electricity, and the campground offers a dump site, restrooms with showers, and laundry and dishwashing facilities. Sites cost $22 per night.  

Sebastian Inlet State Park

Perhaps one of the best parks on our list for beach lovers, Sebastian Inlet State Park camping offers a peaceful Atlantic Ocean getaway. Entrance to the park costs $8 per multi-occupant vehicle and $4 for single-occupant vehicles. The park’s campground is centrally located, and the beach is within walking distance. Sites each come with water, electricity, a picnic table, and a fire ring with a grill. Pitch a tent or park your RV for just $28 per night. 

While at the park, there are plenty of things to do to keep busy. Cyclists will enjoy the 40-mile paved bike path, and there are also three mountain biking trails located within the park. Sebastian Inlet State Park also has various boat launches, and you can even head over to the Gulf Stream, which is located less than 30 miles from the Sebastian Inlet. The area is also known for its excellent fishing conditions, and water lovers can rent canoes or kayaks from the marina. Snorkeling and scuba diving are also permitted in the park’s waters.  

Collier-Seminole State Park

Spanning over 70,000 acres, Collier-Seminole State Park lies within one of the largest mangrove swamps in the world. Here you will be able to observe flora and fauna typical of the Florida everglades, and the park is also the site of a National Historic Mechanical Engineering Landmark: The Bay City Walking Dredge. Collier-Seminole State Park camping is convenient and comfortable, and sites come with water, electricity, a grill, and a picnic table. 

The campground also offers a dump station, restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. There are 105 campsites in the park, and you can tent or RV camp for just $22 per night, though certain sites are designated for tents, pop-ups, and hammocks. There are also primitive campsites that are only accessible via hiking trails or canoe. 

While at the park, bike around the offroad Prairie Hammock Trail, take a guided canoe trip on the Blackwater River, or hike one of the park’s four excellent nature trails. Hiking trail options range from between less than a mile to more than five miles, so there’s sure to be a suitable option for hikers of every age and ability. 

Bahia Honda State Park

Finally, if we head all the way down to the Florida Keys, we will find Bahia Honda State Park. Located along the southernmost tip of U.S. Highway 1, this beachside oasis offers some of the most spectacular views that you’ll get from any Florida state park. The park also has some of the best offshore snorkeling in all of the Florida Keys, and with depths of between four and six feet, even beginners can catch a glimpse at some native Florida marine life. 

Bahia Honda State Park camping is quite varied. The Buttonwood campground sites accommodate both tents and RVs, and they offer water, electricity, a picnic table, and a grill. There are a few sites located on the water, but they offer little shade. The Buttonwood campground also has a dump station and restrooms with shower facilities. 

The Bayside campground, the smallest of the park’s campgrounds, has only eight sites, none of which have electricity.  And pay close attention to your vehicle height: RVs (and vehicles in general) cannot exceed a height of 6 feet 8 inches, as they will have to pass under the Bahia Honda Bridge to access the campgrounds. Campsites cost $36 per night, and entrance to the park costs $8 per multi-occupant vehicle and $4 for single-occupant vehicles.

That’s where these lighthouses come in. Before there was GPS, lighthouses allowed sailors to safely sail around Florida’s shallow waters and reefs.  

The oldest lighthouse in Florida was the original St. Augustine lighthouse, which was built in 1824. However, the original structure was dismantled, and the St. Augustine lighthouse that you can see today (and that you will find at the top of our list) was constructed 50 years later.

1. St. Augustine

As we mentioned, the original St. Augustine Lighthouse was the first lighthouse to be constructed in Florida (in 1824), before Florida was even a state! However, the original lighthouse was doomed to sink into the Atlantic Ocean due to erosion, so a new one was constructed to replace it. The lighthouse that you can visit today opened in 1874 and is coming up on its 150th anniversary.

At the St. Augustine Lighthouse, you can also find the Maritime Museum. The lighthouse and museum aim to preserve maritime history and tell the story of the nation’s oldest port. The lighthouse and museum are open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., seven days a week, with adult tickets priced at $14.95 and senior’s (60+) and children’s (under 12) at $12.95. Aside from climbing the lighthouse tower, visitors can find fun activities for the whole family, such as a shipyard play area for the little ones and even lighthouse ghost tours for the thrill-seekers of the bunch. 

If you’re in St. Augustine visiting the lighthouse, you can’t miss the city’s other historic landmarks. We recommend checking out the Castillo de San Marcos Monument, the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States. St. Augustine also boasts beautiful beaches, like St. Augustine Beach and Crescent Beach on Anastasia Island. 

2. Ponce Inlet

Aside from St. Augustine, Ponce Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is one of the most famous lighthouses in Florida. You will find this gem at Ponce de León Inlet in Central Florida. At 175 feet high, this lighthouse is the tallest lighthouse in Florida and one of the tallest in the United States! You can climb its 203 steps to the top to get spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean, and the museum offers a look into the history of lighthouses and their keepers. The lighthouse and museum are open seven days a week, all year round, with the exception of Thanksgiving and Christmas Day. Adult (12+) tickets are priced at $6.95 and children’s (3-11) are $1.95. 

Aside from the incredible views you’ll get from the top of this impressive structure, Ponce de León Inlet offers plenty of other interesting activities. Surrounding the lighthouse you’ll find Ponce Inlet Park, with wide open beaches, jogging and biking paths, and a conveniently-located parking area. Or head to the Marine Science Center to see turtles, sting rays, and a variety of the surrounding area’s rich marine life. 

3. Gasparilla Island Lighthouse

Gasparilla Island Lighthouse is located in Gasparilla Island State Park, which forms part of a chain of Gulf Coast barrier islands. This island houses the 105-foot-tall lighthouse, which was originally constructed in 1881 and began its service in Delaware. In 1927, the lighthouse was dismantled and reconstructed on Gasparilla Island. The lighthouse is open for regular day climbs, and tickets are $15 for adults and $5 for children (6-11). By climbing to the top, you’ll get an incredible view of the Gulf of Mexico and the Gasparilla Sound.

Also located on Gasparilla Island is the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum. This lighthouse has been serving as a guiding light to sailors since 1890, and during WWII, the lighthouse was even used to watch for German U-boats. The museum highlights the rich history of Gasparilla Island, dating all the way back to 12,000 B.C. Entrance to the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum is free with admission to the park.

4. Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse

Located on the north side of the Jupiter Inlet, the Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse and Museum is a must-see if you find yourself in the Jupiter area. This 108-foot structure was first lit in 1860, and to this day the lighthouse remains an active public Aid to Navigation. You can visit the lighthouse and museum from Wednesday to Sunday, though the facilities are closed on most major holidays. Admission is $12 for adults, $10 for seniors (60+), and $6 for children (6-18). 

Can climb the 105 steps to the top of the red brick lighthouse for the best view in Palm Beach County. Or consider attending a special event, like a sunset or moonrise tour, or even twilight yoga on the lighthouse deck. Plus, kids will enjoy the lighthouse storytime events, which are held monthly. 

Once you get done with your visit to one of the most popular lighthouses in Florida, there are plenty of other things to do in Jupiter. Catch a sunrise at picturesque Juno Beach, check out the turtle’s nests at Hobe Sound Natural Wildlife Refuge, or explore the 73 acres of natural Florida landscapes at Blowing Rocks Preserve. 

5. Pensacola Lighthouse

Pensacola houses another Florida lighthouse that offers a spectacular sight from the top. You can climb the 177 steps up the historic Pensacola Lighthouse for impressive Gulf Coast views. This lighthouse was built in 1859 and is located at the Naval Air Station in Pensacola. 

At the lighthouse, you will also find the Maritime Museum, with exhibits like the “History of Illumination”, “Industries of Pensacola”, “Women Who Lit the Way”, and more. The lighthouse and museum are open seven days a week (closed on major holidays), and tickets are $8 for adults and $4 for children (12 and under), seniors (60+), and military members.

While you’re in the area, you can check out the National Naval Aviation Museum right next door. Nature-lovers should consider heading over to the Tarkiln Bayou Preserve State Park, where you can find almost 100 types of rare plants and animals. 

6. Key West Lighthouse

The original Key West Lighthouse was built in 1825, but the one you will find today opened in 1848. In fact, its first keeper was a woman! You will find the historic lighthouse and museum in Bahama Village on Key West. This landmark is a must-see if you are in the area, and be sure to climb the 88 steps up to the top of the lighthouse for the best views in Key West. 

The museum highlights the lives of the various keepers that have served the lighthouse, and includes a visit to the keeper’s quarters. You can visit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., seven days a week, and tickets are $17 for adults, $12 for senior/local/college ID/retired military, $8 for youth (8-17) and free for children 7 and under. 

Aside from the Key West Lighthouse and Museum, other suggested Key West activities include the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum and the Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory.

7. Cape Florida Lighthouse

At almost 200 years old, the Cape Florida Lighthouse is the oldest structure in all of Miami-Dade county. You will find the lighthouse on Cape Florida, at the southeast corner of Key Biscayne. The structure was built in 1825, and the historical lighthouse has even been added to the National Register of Historic Places. 

Visiting lighthouses in Florida is usually free and Cape Florida is no exception! Entry to the park is at no cost and you can climb the 109 steps to the top of the structure to get the best views of Key Biscayne. The lighthouse is open five days a week (closed Tuesday and Wednesday) and can be climbed from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. And while you’re in Key Biscayne, head to Crandon Park, where you can rent sea kayaks, go snorkeling, or sign up for a sunset boat cruise. 

8. Cape St. George Lighthouse

In the center of Little St. George Island you will find the St. George Lighthouse. Though it is not the island’s original lighthouse, the structure that you can visit today was built in 1852. The lighthouse stood tall for over 150 years, weathering storms and erosion, but in 2005, it collapsed into the Gulf. The structure was rescued, rebuilt, and reopened to the public in 2008. In 2011, a replica of the original keeper’s quarters was opened, which serves as the lighthouse museum and gift shop. 

Believe it or not, the 72-foot-high lighthouse is the tallest structure on the island. You can climb the 92 wooden steps to the top of the lighthouse for views of Apalachicola Bay, the St. George Sound, and the 4-mile-long St. George Island Bridge. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for children (6-12) and U.S. military/veterans, and free for children under 6. The lighthouse is open six days a week (closed Thursdays).

Once you’ve visited the lighthouse, there are plenty of other great activities on St. George Island. You can’t miss the breathtaking untouched beaches at St. George State Park, or if the weather’s nice, head out on the water: you can charter a fishing boat, rent kayaks, or go on a dolphin tour. 

9. Crooked River Lighthouse

Located in the town of Carrabelle in the Florida Panhandle, the Crooked River Lighthouse was built where it currently stands at the end of the 19th century, though the structure that you can visit today was refurbished in 2007. You can climb 128 steps up the 103-foot tower for sweeping views of the St. George Sound.Weather permitting, the tower is open for climbs Wednesday through Sunday, and the cost is $5 for adults (13+), $3 for youth (7-12), and free for children 6 and under. 

You can also visit the Keeper’s House Museum and the lighthouse’s public park (equipped with a picnic and recreation area) free of charge. The museum includes exhibits highlighting historic lighthouse artifacts. While you’re in Carrabelle, soak up the sun on the area’s miles of pristine white sugar sand beaches.

This beach is actually located on the barrier island of Santa Rosa (not to be confused with Santa Rosa Beach), which spans 18 miles of white sand beaches.

Pensacola Beach, found on the western tip of the Sunshine State, offers a variety of activities aside from lounging on its sugary sand. It’s a great area to take a dolphin cruise, or head out to the fishing pier and cast your line into the crystal clear waters.

Nature-lovers should check out the Pensacola Beach Eco-Trail, which leads visitors on a tour of the area’s flora and fauna. The pier at Naples Beach stretches 1,000 feet into the Gulf, making it an ideal fishing spot. Sebastian Inlet State Park

Considered to be one of the best saltwater fishing areas off the east coast of Florida, Sebastian Inlet State Park offers three miles of untouched Atlantic beaches. Fishing fanatics can try their hand at catching some mackerel, snook, or bluefish. Meanwhile, surfers can head out to the break for some of the best surfing conditions you’ll find on the Eastern Seaboard.

Other relaxing activities include birding, shelling, and picnicking. There are also a couple of museums in the park, such as the Sebastian Fishing Museum and the McLarty Treasure Museum.

If you’re really looking for a quiet escape, reserve one of the park’s more than 50 campsites. Sites at the main campground are all equipped with electricity, picnic tables, and campfires, and nearby you will find restrooms and a Wi-Fi hotspot. And for the more rustic campers, check out the park’s primitive campground located at the Bayside Marina.

You will find Sebastian Inlet State Park along U.S. Route 1 between Palm Bay and Vero Beach. There are various parking options on the inlet, and more parking is available on the mainland near the south side of the park.

Crescent Beach

Located some ten miles down the coast from downtown St. Augustine, Crescent Beach is a quiet and relaxing Atlantic Ocean escape. This area is much less crowded than many other Florida beaches, making it the perfect option for beachgoers looking for rest and relaxation.

Its hard-packed sand makes it the ideal spot for long walks down the shore, beach volleyball, morning runs, bike rides, or even seaside horseback riding. Visitors who are looking to stay close to the shore have the option to rent beach houses, cottages, or condos in a convenient location.

If you’d rather drive into the area, there is an ample parking lot located within walking distance of the beach. The area also offers other amenities, such as restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a pavilion.

If you really want to disconnect, head to Matanzas State Forest, which can be reached by car from the beach in about ten minutes. Here you can enjoy hiking, biking, bird watching, camping, and more. Keep an eye out for local wildlife and see if you can spot one of the bald eagles or otters who call the forest home.

Best Shelling Beaches in Florida

If searching for shells is more your thing, there is no shortage of shelling beaches in the Sunshine State. You can find gorgeous conches and coveted sand dollars at our top picks for shelling in Florida: Turner Beach on Sanibel Island and Tigertail Beach on Marco Island.

Turner Beach

If you pay a visit to the Sanibel Island area, specifically Captiva, Turner Beach is your spot for seaside lounging and shelling. The area boasts over 250 different kinds of seashells native to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean region.

You will find Turner Beach along an approximately 15-mile stretch of beaches on the island. One of the reasons that we recommend Turner Beach is because it tends to be much less crowded than the other areas you pass before reaching our recommended spot. This means that the seashell offering is more abundant and diverse than what you might find at other, more popular beaches.

Once you’ve gotten your share of shell hunting, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. Turner Beach is also an excellent fishing spot. Head out on the beach’s rock jetty to cast your line or simply snap some beautiful pictures.

Turner Beach is about a 45-minute drive from Fort Myers, and there is a parking lot conveniently located right next to the beach. But there are also lodging options on the island if you would like to stay nearby. You can find cottages, vacation rentals, apartments, and more on Captiva Island, or stay next door on Sanibel Island, where you can find a variety of places to stay.

Tigertail Beach

Head to the southwest coast of the state and you’ll find Marco Island among the mangroves and Everglades. Marco Island is a well-known Florida Gulf Coast getaway. Though the area as a whole is highly developed (resort hotels and golf courses abound), Tigertail Beach is a natural escape.

The beach is a Collier County park, and you’ll find a paid parking area, a snack bar, and changing rooms at the developed part of the beach. But once you cross the beach’s roughly 50-yard-long lagoon, you’ll find yourself along three miles of untouched coastline.

Its challenging access is what has helped to preserve Tigertail Beach. Once you make the 15-20 minute trek across the lagoon, you’ll be able to search for an endless amount of gorgeous shells while dolphins swim offshore and ospreys fill the air.

Once you’re ready to head back to civilization, you’ll find plenty of things to do on Marco Island. Take a sightseeing boat tour, play a round of golf, or check out the Marco Island Historical Museum. The area also has a great offering of shopping and dining options.

As you can see, there is a Florida beach for everyone. Whether you’re looking for adventure, relaxation, or simply a picturesque place to soak up the sun, the Sunshine State offers a diverse variety of seaside getaways. For us, these are the best beaches in Florida, and we hope that this list helps you find your ideal oceanside escape.

1. Science and Education 

Believe it or not, Florida has some incredible educational activities for both kids and adults to enjoy. No matter what kind of topic your children are interested in, you’re sure to find an activity that is interesting for the whole family. 

For the ocean lovers, Florida is one of the best places to learn about marine biology. To start, the Mote Marine Laboratory and Aquarium in Sarasota is a must-see. The aquarium houses practically every marine creature you could imagine, including otters, sharks, and sea turtles. And be sure to pay a visit to the aquarium’s resident manatees, Hugh and Buffet, who have been at the center for over two decades. 

Children who are more interested in the sky than the sea will love the various aviation and outer space themed visits. For the aspiring astronomers, the Kennedy Space Center and the Orlando Science Center Observatory are great visits. Florida is also home to the National Aviation Museum, located in Pensacola, where you can enjoy interactive exhibits like flight simulators and an Apollo 11 virtual reality experience. 

Finally, the Miami Children’s Museum is the perfect visit for the littlest ones in your crew. Hands-on exhibits include a multi-sensory zone, a rock climbing wall, the “construction zone”, a music-maker’s studio, and an “ocean odyssey” experience.  

2. Arts and Culture

There are plenty of cultural excursions in Florida that offer something for every member of the family. Art lovers can’t miss the Ringling Museum in Sarasota. Established as the legacy of circus mogul John Ringling and his wife Mable, the museum houses over 28,000 works of Western and non-Western art. 

Speaking of Sarasota, the area is in fact one of the state’s prime cultural hubs. Check out the upscale art galleries at St. Armands Circle (which was designed by John Ringling himself and inspired by a circus ring), and don’t miss the more than 30 sculptures that line the circle’s paths. 

The city is also home to the Sarasota Museum of Art (SMOA), Sarasota’s first modern and contemporary art museum, and the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall, where you can see musicals, comedians, musicians, and more. 

But Sarasota isn’t the only Florida city with a rich cultural offering. You’ll find the Dali Museum in St. Petersburg, where visitors can learn about surrealism and see 8 of the Spanish artist’s masterworks. Or head to Miami and pay a visit to the Perez Art Museum, which has one of the largest collections of modern Cuban art in America. 

Also in Miami are the totally Instagrammable Wynwood Walls, which are a colorful street art mural that can serve as the backdrop for your kid’s next Facebook profile picture or even a lovely family photo. Or check out the Miami City Ballet for some world class dance performances. 

Finally, literature lovers are sure to enjoy the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum in Key West. Here you can see where the famous author lived in the 1930s and meet the approximately 60 six-toed descendants of Hemingway’s beloved cat Snow White. 

3. State & National Parks 

There is no shortage of beautiful state and national parks in Florida. One of the most well-known destinations in the state is Everglades National Park, and for good reason. Biking, kayaking, bird watching, fishing, and boating are just some of the activities that you can enjoy in the park. As the largest surviving subtropical wilderness in the United States, the Everglades is perhaps best known for its concentration of the American alligator, a Florida icon. 

If you have a manatee lover in the family, head to Blue Springs State Park, where you can get up close and personal with the gentle sea creatures. For more underwater adventures, check out John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park in Key Largo. The park spans about 70 nautical square miles of crystalline waters, and visitors can catch a glimpse of its beautiful reefs on a glass-bottom boat tour. 

And for those who would rather stay on land, check out Florida Caverns State Park, where visitors can explore the expansive underground limestone cave system on a guided tour. Lastly, Falling Waters State Park is another way to enjoy the state’s natural beauty. Located in northwest Florida, the park houses the state’s largest waterfall, “Falling Waters Falls”, which measures in at 73 feet tall. 

4. Nature & Wildlife 

Florida’s flora and fauna provide plenty of fun activities for the whole family. Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park allows visitors to view an incredibly diverse offering of wildlife, including fish, manatees, alligators, flamingos, cranes, bobcats, black bears, red wolves, and even the endangered Florida panther. 

For the future veterinarians, The Turtle Hospital in Marathon, Florida is an excellent visit. This non-profit organization is dedicated to rescue, rehabilitation, and release of injured sea turtles. Or check out the Florida Keys Wild Bird Center, which has the same mission as The Turtle Hospital but is dedicated to birds and “keeping them flying”. 

Aspiring marine biologists will love The Florida Aquarium, where you can enjoy exhibits that highlight sea creatures like sharks, sea horses, jellyfish, and starfish. Or head out on the aquarium’s Bay Spirit II for a 75 minute wild dolphin cruise experience. Finally, to see some more exotic creatures, check out the center’s “Journey to Madagascar”, which houses giant clams, the Madagascar tortoise, and ring tailed lemurs. 

Another lovely nature-inspired Florida visit is the Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory. Here you can stroll among hundreds of vibrant and diverse butterflies and birds or enjoy special experiences like “Flamingle”, an up-close encounter with the conservatory’s flamingos, Rhett and Scarlett. The center also offers guided twilight tours which offer a glimpse into what happens at the conservatory as the sun goes down. 

Finally, there are numerous alligator farms in Florida that allow you to see the state’s most infamous creature with your own eyes. You can find locations lining the state, in areas like St. Augustine, Christmas, and the Everglades. At the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park, you’ll see not just alligators, but also an array of wildlife, including snakes, sloths, and exotic birds. 

5. Outdoor Activities & Events 

One of the best parts about the Sunshine State is its lovely year-round weather. Take advantage of Florida’s pleasant climate and enjoy some outdoor activities and special events all year long. 

If you find yourself in Florida in March, consider attending a MLB spring training game. Also known as the Grapefruit League, you can watch teams like the Mets, Cardinals, Tigers, Yankees, Red Sox, and Marlins face off in the first games of the season. Games are held on the east and west coasts of the state, and host cities include Port St. Lucie and West Palm Beach on the east coast and Bradenton and Sarasota on the west coast.

Families more interested in watersports than baseball have no shortage of activities in Florida. If you find yourself along some of the state’s 8,436 miles of coastline, rent a kayak or a paddleboard and explore the Atlantic Ocean or the Gulf of Mexico. Or go snorkeling, swimming, or tubing in a natural spring. Check out De Leon Springs for a refreshing dip, Ginnie Springs for snorkeling and scuba diving, and Ichetucknee Springs for one of the state’s best tubing spots. 

Florida is also an incredible location for scuba diving enthusiasts, and even kids can give this adventurous underwater activity a try. With PADI, the largest scuba diving training association in the world, children as young as 8 can learn how to dive in shallow waters, and kids ages 10 and older can enroll in an Open Water Dive Course. Some great shallow-water diving and snorkeling spots in Florida include Vero Beach and Deerfield Beach, or head deeper into the underwater caves at Devil’s Den. 

You probably won’t be surprised to hear us recommend that you take full advantage of the almost 700 miles of sandy beaches that the state offers. But there are some special Florida beaches that offer unique experiences you won’t find anywhere else. To start, you can enjoy the Pier 60 Sunset Celebration every night at Clearwater Beach. The daily event takes place from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m., where artists, musicians, and street performers entertain visitors on the 1,080 foot pier. 

Or head to the beaches near Venice for shark tooth hunting. The area is considered to have quite the abundant quantity of these fossilized teeth, so check out areas like Caspersen Beach, Casey Key, and Manasota Key. Or if shelling and finding sand dollars is more up you and your family’s alley, don’t miss Tigertail Beach on Marco Island. 

6. Soak Up Some History 

For the history buffs out there, Florida has plenty of unique attractions that the whole family will enjoy. Perhaps Florida’s best historic visit is St. Augustine, which was founded in 1565 and claims to be the nation’s oldest city. Enjoy the Spanish architecture and quaint cobblestone streets in the colonial quarter, and while you’re in town, don’t miss the San Marco Fort, or Castillo de San Marcos. Built by the Spanish to defend Florida and the Atlantic trade route, it is the oldest masonry fort in the continental United States.  

You can visit other historic forts throughout the state, like Fort Jefferson at the Dry Tortugas National Park and Fort Pickens at Gulf Islands National Seashore. In fact, Fort Jefferson is the biggest brick masonry structure in all the Americas. 

Florida is also full of historic lighthouses. We recommend checking out the state’s oldest lighthouse, the Amelia Island Lighthouse, which was built over 180 years ago. Or visit Florida’s tallest lighthouse, Ponce Inlet Lighthouse, which measures in at 176 feet tall. 

7. Enjoy Some Thrills 

There are plenty of places in Florida to get an adrenaline rush aside from the amusement park roller coasters. For car buffs, a must-visit is the Daytona International Speedway, where you can enjoy daily guided tours. And while you’re there, don’t miss the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America. The museum has a variety of displays and highlights all types of motorsports: stock cars, sports cars, motorcycles, drag racing, land speed records, and more. 

If you’d rather get your thrills outdoors, there is no shortage of adventure activities to check out in the Sunshine State. If you find yourself in the Everglades, take an airboat ride through the mangroves and try your luck at spotting a gator. Another great water adventure to try is parasailing. You can find plenty of parasailing locations along the Florida coast in picturesque locations like Key West, Cocoa Beach, and Marco Island. Or consider renting a jet ski and enjoy the freedom of the open water. 

For those looking to get up close and personal with some of the state’s native marine life, you have a number of options. Head to Crystal River to swim or snorkel with manatees. You’ll be blown away by these gentle giants’ impressive size. Or for the more daring, take a dip with some sting rays at Orlando’s Discovery Cove where you can get up close and personal with (and even help with the feeding of) these intimidating creatures. And for the faint of heart, a dolphin swim may be a more suitable activity.

But even if you’d rather stay on land, you still have plenty of ways to enjoy the most adventurous activities that Florida has to offer. To start, give ziplining a try. Fly through the trees or above the water in cities like Kissimmee, Daytona Beach, and Tampa Bay. For the animal lovers, head out for some horseback riding. Perhaps one of the most memorable experiences you can have in Florida is taking a sunset horseback ride along the beach. Finally, the more athletic ones can try their hand at mountain biking at Alafia River State Park. The area offers over 20 miles of single track trails with varying difficulty levels.
