Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida, is situated on the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Sarasota. The beach stretches for about a mile and a half, but if you keep walking southward, you can reach Manasota Key, about four miles along the coast. 

Directions to Caspersen Beach are pretty straightforward, even if you’re unfamiliar with the area. If you’re driving from Sarasota, take US-41 south and turn right onto East Venice Avenue and then turn south onto Harbor Drive, which will take you directly to Caspersen beach (all the way at the end of the road). If you’re coming from further afield, the closest airport is Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, which is approximately 30-45 minutes away by car.

Why Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida is So Popular

Caspersen Beach, FL, is known for its stunning beauty and natural surroundings. One of its main distinctions is that you won’t find any hotels on Caspersen Beach. Unlike many beaches in the area, there are no condos or homes along the shoreline, giving visitors a feeling of being completely immersed in nature. 

Sarasota County maintains the beach and park and has implemented practices to ensure that Caspersen remains a pristine natural habitat for all. Further, Caspersen has Blue Wave Certification, an Environmental Certification ensuring it stays unpolluted and undeveloped. No camping, tobacco products, or fires are allowed on this stretch of coastline.

The beach is over 9000 feet long, with two-thirds left in its natural form. The clear blue waters are perfect for swimming or wading. But what really sets Caspersen Beach apart is its abundance of shark teeth. If you’re a fan of shark tooth hunting, this is the place to be. 

Caspersen Beach is Known as the Venice Shark Tooth Beach

One of the main reasons visitors flock to this seaside oasis is for the chance to hunt for fossilised shark teeth. This beach is known as the “Venice Shark Tooth Beach” because it’s one of the best places in the world to find them. 

On Caspersen Beach, Shark teeth are easy to spot, and visitors can spend hours combing through the sand to find their treasures. The best time to hunt for shark teeth is at low tide when the teeth are exposed in shallow water. Keep in mind that fossilised shark teeth are a non-renewable resource, so it’s important to follow the rules and regulations when hunting for them. That said, Caspersen Beach sharks’ teeth are a major attraction, and an activity that all ages and abilities can enjoy.

Caspersen Beach Weather

Being in Florida, Caspersen Beach has a subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. 

The best time to visit is from November to April, when temperatures are cooler, and there is less humidity. During this time, average temperatures range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s, making it perfect weather for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the beach. 

Florida is known for its sunny weather, and Caspersen Beach is no exception. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from the intense UV rays.

Keep in mind that hurricane season runs from June through November, so be sure to check the weather forecast before planning your trip.

Caspersen Beach Tides

If you plan to hunt for shark teeth, knowing the tides is essential. The tides can vary greatly depending on the time of year and the phase of the moon, so be sure to check the tide charts before you go and plan your visit accordingly. 

At Caspersen Beach, low tides are the best time to search for teeth, as they will most likely be exposed on the sand. High tide, on the other hand, can make it challenging to find teeth and be dangerous if you’re not a strong swimmer since the beach is not very wide.

Caspersen Beach Parking

One of the best things about Caspersen Beach is that parking is free! There are several parking areas available, including disability-accessible spaces. The main parking lot is at the beach entrance, but several smaller lots are scattered throughout the park. Parking at the northern side, near Sharky’s On The Pier, fills up pretty fast, leaving the lot at the south side with more available space a lot of the time. 

Remember that the parking lots can fill up quickly during peak season, so arrive early to ensure you get a spot.

Are There Any Caspersen Beach Hotels? 

Venice, Florida, has a wealth of excellent hotels to choose from if you are visiting the area. However, you will not find any of them on Caspersen Beach. One of the most attractive features of this rugged shoreline is the natural, unspoiled terrain that lets you immerse in the ecology and wildlife. 

Thankfully, you won’t have too far to go to find somewhere you can lay your head after a day enjoying the sun and sea. Just north of the beach in historic Venice, and at nearby beaches such as Manasota, Venice Beach, and Nokomis Beach, you’ll find plenty of enticing accommodation spanning a range of budgets.

Facilities at Caspersen Beach

Caspersen Beach, FL, has several visitor facilities, including showers, picnic tables, and grills. The restrooms were refurbished in 2012 but are still in excellent condition and have disability access.

Parents should note no lifeguards are on duty at this Sarasota County beach. There are strong currents and undertows, so be cautious when entering the water and swim at your own risk. 

Other Things to Do at Caspersen Beach

Whatever your reason for visiting Caspersen Beach, you have plenty of choices. Beach lovers come here to swim, snorkel among some of the rocks, and fish. 

The beach park has a lovely boardwalk and a kayak launch area, making it easy to explore the nearby waterways. 

For those looking to connect to the Legacy Biking/Walking Trail, there is a convenient trailhead at the beach and free bicycle racks if you want to lock up your bike and take a break or stop at the ADA children’s playground. 

You won’t be disappointed here if you’re looking for a wildlife experience. Caspersen Beach is home to various wildlife, including sea turtles, dolphins, and various species of birds. While it can be exciting to spot these creatures, it is important to respect their space and not disturb them.

In fact, sea turtles nest every year along southwest Florida’s beaches. Sea turtle nesting season officially begins on May 1 and goes through October. During this time, all the beaches in the area including Caspersen will have turtle nests marked off. Please be extra cautious and do not disturb these nests or any baby turtles that you see hatching and making their way to the sea in the early morning hours.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that it is illegal to remove live shells, sand dollars, starfish, and other marine life from the beach. So if you’re planning on shark teeth hunting, bring a sifter or a small shovel to sift through the sand and look for teeth without inadvertently taking any hitchhiking sealife home! 

Is Caspersen Beach Dog-Friendly?

One final note worth mentioning: sadly, no dogs are allowed on Caspersen Beach. However, it’s not all bad news for your furry, sea-loving pooch.

Just a few minutes drive north, just off Harbor Drive (near the Venice Lake Golf Course), is Brohard Beach – the only dog-friendly beach in Sarasota. This off-lead dog beach has a fully fenced-in dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. It’s a beautiful park with grass, trees, benches, water fountains for the dogs, and a dog-washing area! And YES, you can also find shark teeth at Brohard Dog Beach!

Manasota Key – A Truly Dream Florida Beach Vacation

With its tropical breezes, white sand beaches, breathtaking sunsets, abundant parks, and low-key crowd you can find a unique sense of relaxation that you can’t get just anywhere in Florida. You have the beautiful gulf coast on the west, and the quaint Lemon Bay to the east, everywhere you go, you are bound to be on a waterfront.

If water sports are your thing, you can’t go wrong whether it is smooth water kayaking, watching the dolphins swim right alongside or feeling the wind in your hair atop a jet ski speeding out in the open water of the Gulf. With the copious amounts of coastline to either side of you, you are also always a few steps away from the perfect “beach” vibe you are looking for.

You can find sandy beaches, rocky beaches, and even more tree-filled natural waterside retreats, and grass flats such as the kind you find in Stump Pass Beach State Park. Measuring at roughly 11 miles long, you will find you have plenty of beach area to spread out your blanket and soak up the rays, without being on top of the stranger next to you.

No Party Crowd. Get the Real Florida Vibe at Manasota Key

While this peninsula does attract a younger crowd, this is definitely not the type of area that attracts a big party crowd, leaving you plenty of headspace and quiet to dive into the latest beach read in your tote. On the eastern shores of Lemon Bay, you can discover the Lemon Bay Aquatic Preserve which is teeming with seagrass communities, oyster ecosystems and submerged mangroves.

Where is Manasota Key in Florida?

Manasota Key’s name derives from a combination of its proximity to Sarasota and the large population of Manatees you can spot in the area. You’ll find this peninsula on the gulf coast of Florida, between two bodies of water, Lemon Bay and the Gulf of Mexico, roughly halfway between Tampa and Ft. Myers. It is a roughly 2.5 hour drive from Orlando, and just over 3 hours when traveling all the way across the state from Miami.

You can access the key from Highway 777, which has direct access from Florida’s I-75 that connects Ft. Myers to Tampa Bay. Due to this easy access point, you will find this vacation spot relatively easy to get to from most parts of the state, as long as you get to the 75. From Orlando, it is a quick jaunt on I-4 over to Tampa and down, and from Miami, a short trip north on the 95, west on 595 and then the 75 connection north.

Pick a Beach, Any Beach!

The Beach, there isn’t a shortage of sand to spread out on, catch some sun, splash in the water, walk, run, shell hunt, picnic while watching the sunset – whatever your heart desires you are sure to find the perfect spot on the beach for it. With choices like, Englewood Beach, Stump Pass Beach, Blind Pass Beach, and Manasota Beach we are confident you will find the right sandy retreat for you.

Don’t forget the sunblock, because even on cloudy days, those UV rays can come on strong, and you might want to eat lobster, but you don’t want to be one yourself.

Fun on the Water – Kayaking, Boating, Jet Skiing

Want to get out on the water? Check out any one of the local Kayak rental spots! These places are filled with knowledgeable locals running the desks to help you not only get out onto the water safely, but also get you out there with maps and ideas for routes to take to ensure you get the most from your paddling adventure, whether that is spotting nature, or finding the best inlet to “lay anchor” and relax while listening to some island beats.

Visit Stump Pass State Park (maybe see Manatees or Dolphins!)

Stump Pass State Park is just one of the many great parks this Key has to offer. If you are a nature lover, be sure to stop by these nature trails for the chance to spot gopher tortoises, snowy egrets, frigate birds, and West Indian manatees! During the winter months, Ranger-led hikes are available, and parking in the park is $3 per vehicle, with no other admission costs. You simply can’t go to Manasota Key and pass up the chance to explore the beautiful 245 acres this State Park has to offer.

While we’re on the subject of wildlife, you can get your blood pumping with the numerous hiking and biking trails around the Manasota Key area for you to enjoy, totaling in over 92 miles of trail enjoyment!  Not all trails are created equal, so be sure to read up on what type of wildlife and terrain you are looking for before you grab the bug spray and put on your hiking shoes.

If watching the wildlife and hiking in nature isn’t your thing, and you are looking for a bit more thrill, there is no shortage of locations for rent jet skis, or get a bird’s eye view from a parasailing adventure.

We have mentioned jet ski, and kayak rentals, but don’t forget you can also take advantage of boat, paddle board and bike rentals from numerous locations along the Key’s shores.

Take a Drive, Admire the Homes!

Maybe you need a break from the sun and salty sea air, crave some air conditioning but don’t want to sit still in a restaurant, then we suggest hopping in the car and going for a ride down Canopy road. Especially if you enjoy fantasizing about real estate opportunities/house hunting. Not only is this drive gorgeous, with the road’s beautiful natural canopy of trees hanging over it, the houses are to die for. Have fun taking notes on who is going to live where when you all “grow up.”

Go Fishing

Are you an angler? Surf fishing is a popular activity on Manasota Key, take your chances casting in from knee deep water, or keep yourself dry up on the shore to see what you can catch. You are bound to not only get a bite, but also get some great conversation with surrounding anglers as well. Or maybe you want to see what you can catch in the deeper waters of the gulf, if so, be sure to nab a spot on one of the numerous fishing boat trips that depart out to the deeper waters all around the peninsula’s coastline.

Don’t Miss the Incredible Sunsets

Each morning the sun comes up, which means that at night it is bound to go down. Enjoy the best that a Gulf Coast destination has to offer – a glorious sunset. Sunset viewing is a popular activity anywhere you can get a good view out in the open water, and Manasota Key is no exception to this.

You can’t go wrong no matter where you choose to watch this beautiful daily event, be it from on a boat, the comfort of your beach side rental, or with the sand between your toes and don’t be embarrassed if you feel like giving a round applause after the sun disappears over the horizon – there is a good chance that the person next to you will do the same thing.

While talking of sunsets, Indian Mound Park is one of the best spots on Manasota Key to enjoy the sunset. It is free to access and is open from 6am to sunset daily. The park has links to ancient Native American culture local to the Manasota area, and while it doesn’t have any swimming access, there are great hiking trails, wildlife, picnic areas, clean bathrooms, and even a place to launch your canoe!

Beaches on Manasota Key

Manasota Beach, is likely the least crowded beach on the key, but nonetheless it contains all of the basic amenities you could need. Beautiful sands, a boardwalk, lifeguard and volleyball courts.

Enlgewood Beach is the most popular beach on Manasota Key, and it is ready to accommodate you. Here you will find easy access to a large parking lot, parasailing, beach volleyball, and beachside rentals, as well as a smattering of nearby restaurants to satisfy the hunger that an active day on the beach can bring.

Middle Beach or Blind Pass Beach, is known for its plethora of shark teeth that can be easily found on this 3,000 foot beach. You can also take you time enjoying the mangrove forest, kayaking, or catch some fish off the dock.

Stump Pass State Park Beach is only accessible by foot or by boat, but this remote beach is well worth the journey. Combing the beautiful sands of the key and the wildlife, and plant growth from the state park make this beach a little different than the others, but no less enjoyable.

Depending on where you stay, you may even end up with access to a private beach of your own! Many houses on the key have access to their own private waterfront so be on the lookout for one of these gems. These homes can be the perfect destination for a quiet couples retreat, or even something as large as a family reunion to enjoy home-cooked meals, game nights and sunset viewings – it can feel like your personal vacation home for a brief respite, but one that you don’t have to pay a full-on mortgage for.

Lemon Bay

Lemon Bay is located to the eastern side of the key, which means calmer waters for activities like kayaking, boating, and fishing. This bay covers 8,000 acres, is long, narrow and shallow. A perk is that the water here is brackish water, whereas the friendly Florida gators prefer to reside in fresh water, so anchoring a boat and jumping in the water is a fine idea.

Especially if you choose to partake in water spots in areas that don’t have any many waves involved. You can also find some great eco tours of the bay, so be sure to reserve a spot in your schedule to embark on one of these gems as you’ll be almost certain to spot manatees and dolphins, along with other bird and wildlife.

Is Englewood Beach in Englewood Florida?

This is a great question, and often something we get asked to explain to people who are coming to the area for the first time. Englewood Beach is one of the most popular beaches in the area, and it is at the very southern tip of Manasota Key. Although, there are many other beaches on Manasota Key as well (like we mentioned above).

But it’s important to know that there are 2 very different areas down here – Englewood town which is on the mainland and Englewood Beach which is out on the key. While they are technically the same town and addresses, the areas are quite different.

Englewood Beach – On the Southern Tip of Manasota Key

The Englewood Beach area out on the key is accessible via a bridge from the town of Englewood. Out on the key you’ll find beautiful a gorgeous white sand beach, Stump Pass state park, and restaurants and tiki bars. You’ll also find a number of homes and condos out here and a lot of fantastic vacation rentals as well as a few small hotels.

If you are looking for that quintessential beach vacation, then staying out on the key in Englewood Beach is the most convenient. 

This is an area where you’ll see people walking to and from the beach with their gear, riding bikes, and even golf carts. Restaurants overlooking the water and tiki bars have live music where you can dance with your toes in the sand! It’s very vacation-like and is a great little “bubble” of an area to hang out for a totally relaxed beach vacation.

Englewood Town – Over Bridge from Manasota Key on the Mainland

Englewood town is located on the mainland just off of Manasota Key and is more of a rural, laid back “old Florida” type of town. It’s a fairly small town with a number of unincorporated areas. This is not a resort-style vacation town and you won’t find luxury establishments or high-end shopping here. Englewood is much more of an everyday Florida town that just happens to be by the beach.

While there are vacationers and part-timers who live here, a lot of people in Englewood are full-time residents. 

There are some places to stay in Englewood town for visitors as well as some vacation rentals too. Accommodations on the mainland definitely tend to be a cheaper alternative to staying out on the key at the beach. However, that means you’ll have to drive out to the beach areas – so just keep that in mind.

Favorite Places to Eat & Restaurants on Manasota Key & Nearby

Despite being a smaller, more rural town in Florida, Englewood does cater to vacationers and has some pretty great restaurants to enjoy, both on the mainland and out on the key at the beach.

Lock & Key is one of the best spots to grab a margarita and watch the sunset. Located right across the street from Englewood Beach, this spot usually grabs a crowd of sandy toed and sun tanned faces, and with these eats there is no question why.

Sandbar Tiki & Grille is one of our favorite places out at Englewood Beach. It’s table service, with sand between your toes. This is the perfect beachside restaurant because it makes you feel as though you never actually left Englewood Beach. This place offers and extensive menu, full service bar, covered and uncovered seating, and even has some fireplaces for colder nights.

Eat under the sun or the stars and sway to the tunes of the live band! Watch the locals and tourists meld together on the dance floor and belt out fan favorite songs for all ages. (note – Friday and Saturdays can get quite crowded and loud with some really great bands, perfect for a night out!)

The Waverly is another great spot to grab something to eat if you are out at Englewood Beach on Manasota Key. You can sit downstairs or upstairs with views out over the ocean. From seafood, burgers to pasta, we’ve had some great meals here.

Farlows on the Water is probably our TOP favorite restaurant in the southwest Florida area! Located on the mainland in Englewood town but overlooking waterways and mangroves, this restaurant is truly a gem with their cuisine that’s a mix of Caribbean and Southern Comfort foods. The chef is incredible and they have regular music out on the patio. It’s our go-to spot for date nights or celebrations like anniversaries and birthdays. Be sure to get reservations, especially if it’s a weekend or during busy season (winter).

Visit a Winery (yes, we have those in Florida too)

Just a quick 6.9 mile jaunt from Manasota Key beach, you can find yourself at Catania’s Winery, located in mainland Englewood. Catania has been making award winning wines for over 30 years, and the owner John loves to talk and discuss wine with anyone who comes through the doors. They offer tastings and sales during their hours of operation Wednesdays thru Sundays. Another great winery nearby in Port Charlotte is The Gilded Grape Winery.

Experience Gasparilla Island’s History, Opulence, and Nature

Gasparilla Island is located roughly 30 miles south of Manasota Key down Highway 771 and if you call yourself a fisherman, this is a must see detour to take on your trip to Manasota Key. Gasparilla Island is separated from mainland Florida by Charlotte Harbor and Pine Island South.

Gasparilla Island has beautiful natural scenery and beaches that have attracted the rich and famous for quite some time. From Vanderbilt’s to the DuPont’s. In Boca Grand, the main town area, you’ll find charming shops and restaurants as well as The Gasparilla Inn & Club – a historic hotel with a beautiful golf course.

On the southern end of the island you will find Gasparilla Island State Park, home to the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse which was built in 1890. Here you will find great spots to swim, snorkel, fish, check out the lighthouse museum, and picnic surrounded by nature.

Is parking free at Manasota Key Beach?

Most areas, yes! Many access points along Manasota Key, including Englewood Beach, offer free parking, though spots can fill up quickly (especially in peak season and weekends), so go early in the morning or closer to sunset for easier parking. However, there is limited parking on the southern tip at Stump Pass State Park – and there is a park fee there.

Is Manasota Key Beach crowded?

Compared to other Florida keys and beaches? Not really. That’s one of the biggest reasons people love Manasota Key, it tends to feel much more relaxed and FAR less packed than places like Siesta Key and the Clearwater areas.

Manasota Key is more about natural shells, darker sand, and fossil finds. Although you can find more white and softer sand on the southern parts near Englewood Beach and Stump Pass Beach. But no pink sand.

What is the prettiest beach in Florida?

This one’s subjective, and there are a LOT of stunning beaches in Florida, but we honestly think Manasota Key Beach deserves to be in the conversation.

It’s easily one of the most scenic, peaceful and underrated beautiful beaches in Florida.

What is the quietest beach in Florida?

While there are plenty of quiet beaches across the state, Manasota Key is definitely up there. Especially if you explore beyond Englewood Beach and head toward Blind Pass Beach or Stump Pass Beach State Park. That’s where you’ll really find that “almost empty beach” feeling.

What beach has the most turquoise water in Florida?

For that bright, almost Caribbean-style turquoise water, places like Destin or Panama City Beach or even Siesta Key Beach are great options.

Manasota Key still has beautiful Gulf water but it’s typically a softer blue-green, especially depending on the season and tides.

Is Manasota Key good for shark tooth hunting?

Yes. This is one of the BEST spots in Florida. In fact, it’s often considered part of the broader Vencie, Florida area, which is known as the “shark tooth capital of the world”. Bring a small sieve or scoop and check along the shoreline as you’ll often find fossilized shark teeth mixed in with shells. You can also head slightly north to Venice Beach or Caspersen Beach for a fun shark tooth treasure hunt that will not disappoint.

Are there restaurants on Manasota Key?

You won’t find big chains or anything overly built-up here, but there are several great local spots, especially along Beach Road near Englewood Beach. 

Places like SandBar Tiki & Grille are perfect for a laid-back lunch or sunset drinks with live music, while Lock ’N Key Restaurant is a go-to for seafood and a classic beachside vibe. If you’re in the mood for something a little more elevated, Magnolias on the Bay offers a more upscale experience with beautiful views over Lemon Bay.

We’ve put together a list of our favorite islands in Florida. From the warm Gulf Coast to the beautiful islands of the Atlantic and all the way down to the tropical Florida Keys, check out the 14 Florida islands that we just can’t get enough of! 

Florida Gulf Coast Islands

We’ll start our list of the best Islands in Florida on the beautiful gulf coast, moving from north to south. 

Caladesi Island

Caladesi Island actually a state park. It is one of the last untouched islands on Florida’s Gulf Coast, making it an excellent stop for nature lovers. The nearest town to Caladesi Island is Dunedin, but the island is actually only accessible by boat. The most popular way to get there is by taking the ferry that leaves from nearby Honeymoon Island. 

Caladesi Island is an excellent place to kayak, relax on the beach, and search for shells. Visitors can also enjoy fishing and hiking on this pristine island. Caladesi Island State Park is also equipped with a marina for visitors who would like to come over and/or camp on their own boat. 

Gasparilla Island/Little Gasparilla Island

The next destination on our list is not one but two islands. You’ll find these two neighboring islands located between Sarasota and Fort Myers. Actually, the islands are just a bit south of the beach towns of Englewood and Venice!

Gasparilla Island can be reached from the mainland by car via the Boca Grande Causeway, and there are plenty of things to do on the island. Be sure to check out Gasparilla Island State Park, as well as the island’s two lighthouses, the Gasparilla Island Lighthouse and the Port Boca Grande Lighthouse and Museum. 

Little Gasparilla Island, on the other hand, is only accessible by private boat or water taxi. Plus, no cars are allowed on the island, so you will have to rely on golf carts to make your way around the island. Little Gasparilla Island is an excellent place to plan a relaxing escape, as you can find various vacation homes available to rent. 

Cayo Costa

Another island that is only accessible by boat, Cayo Costa is one of the largest barrier islands in Florida. Cayo Costa is an excellent place to enjoy the natural beauty of the Sunshine State, as you’ll find nine miles of untouched beaches on the island. In fact, the only accommodation options on Cayo Costa are campsites, and you can find 30 tent sites inside the state park. 

You can enjoy a number of activities on Cayo Costa, such as biking (you can rent bikes on the island), hiking, scuba diving, snorkeling, shelling, and more. If you like fishing, cast a line and try to catch some flounder, trout, or snapper. You can take a ferry over to the island from nearby Punta Gorda, Pine Island, or Captiva Island. 

Captiva Island

Speaking of Captiva Island, if we head just a little farther south down the coast, we’ll find this lovely Gulf Coast escape. At just five miles long, Captiva is a small island located near Cayo Costa, Pine Island, and Sanibel Island. It is a great place to enjoy biking, sailing, birding, water sports, and other outdoor activities. Plus, it has some of the most beautiful white-sand beaches that you’ll find on the Gulf Coast.

You’ll find a number of accommodation options on Captiva Island, but if you’re traveling with kids, perhaps your best option is South Seas Island Resort. It offers a number of organized activities for children, as well as 2.5 miles of pristine beaches. However, there are other resorts and vacation rentals on the island if you are looking for alternative accommodation options. 

Sanibel Island

If you drive down Captiva Island you’ll eventually end up on its beautiful neighbor, Sanibel Island. At 12 miles long and up to 3 miles wide at some points, Sanibel Island is about 20 times the size of nearby Captiva. That means more activities, accommodations, and natural Florida Beauty. 

You’ll find some truly spectacular beaches on Sanibel Island, like Bowman’s Beach and Blind Pass Beach, both of which are great places for shelling. There are a number of other attractions that are worth checking out on the island, such as the JN Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, the Sanibel Historical Museum and Village, and the Sanibel Lighthouse. Drive down Periwinkle Way to find the island’s best dining and shopping options. 

Marco Island

Our final Gulf Coast island destination is located all the way down near the Everglades, just about a half-hour south of Naples. Marco Island is the largest of Florida’s “Ten Thousand Islands”, a chain of islands and mangrove islets off the southwest coast of the state. Consequently, you’ll find beautiful mangrove-lined estuaries in the area, as well as pristine beaches: Tigertail Beach is one of the best shelling beaches near Naples. 

There are plenty of other activities to check out on Marco Island, such as golfing, shopping, dining, fishing, and more. There are also a number of natural refuges in the area that are certainly worth visiting, including Ten Thousand Islands National Wildlife Refuge, Collier-Seminole State Park, and Fakahatchee Strand State Preserve.

You can also check out the Briggs Boardwalk on your way out to Marco Island. It’s a fascinating self-guided nature walk where you can learn about the ecosystem, plants, wildlife and more. Plus, it’s a dog-friendly stroll (which we love!). Also, you’re just a short drive away from the world-famous Florida Everglades, which offer an excellent day trip during your stay on Marco Island. 

Florida Atlantic Coast Islands

Now let’s move down the Atlantic Coast and explore what beautiful islands this side of Florida has to offer. 

Amelia Island

You’ll find Amelia Island at the very northern border of the Sunshine State. There are plenty of things to do during your stay at Amelia Island, such as visiting Fort Clinch State Park, located on the northern tip of the island, and exploring the historic downtown Fernandina Beach area. This is a great place to go shopping or grab a bite to eat, as there are plenty of dining options and cute shops downtown. 

You have a variety of accommodation options on Amelia Island, ranging from vacation rentals to upscale hotels. Plus, golfers will absolutely love this island. In fact, it was named one of the 25 best golf islands in the world by LINKS Magazine, the only island in the U.S. to make the list! You have a number of beautiful course options to choose between, so be sure to pack your clubs! Finally, while you’re on the island, be sure to check out the oldest standing lighthouse in the whole state, the Amelia Island Lighthouse. 

Big Talbot Island

Big Talbot Island is actually one of Florida’s numerous state parks. Big Talbot Island State Park is located right outside of Jacksonville, and it is a great way to escape the city and enjoy some of Florida’s natural wonders. This island is a prime location for bird watching, as you can spot ospreys, terns, pelicans, egrets, herons, owls, painted buntings, and even bald eagles!

Aside from birding, there are plenty of other activities to enjoy on the island. There are numerous paths for bikers and hikers, and the islands beaches are perfect for shelling. If you are interested in exploring the area by water, you can sign up for a guided kayak tour, which will take you through special guided trips. You can also rent a kayak and explore the island’s shores and creeks on your own. 

Anastasia Island

Anastasia Island is located right off the shores of historic St. Augustine. This 14-mile long barrier island has a number of interesting attractions that are worth visiting. First off, the St. Augustine Lighthouse and Maritime Museum is located on the island. You should also check out the nearby Anastasia State Park, where you can explore pristine beaches, untouched tidal marshes, and breathtaking sand dunes. 

There are a number of spectacular beaches located on Anastasia Island that are certainly worth visiting. You will want to go to St. Augustine Beach, Butler Beach, and Crescent Beach. And if you happen to be traveling with little ones, another great attraction is the St. Augustine Alligator Farm Zoological Park. For people hoping to stay on the island, you can rent a vacation home or get a room at one of the island’s many hotels. 

Fisher Island

One of the wealthiest zip codes in the country, the exclusive Fisher Island, located right outside of Miami, is only accessible by boat or ferry. With just a little over 170 acres, Fisher Island is home to some 700 families, only about a third of which live there year-round. If you’re looking for accommodations on the island, you can stay at Provident Luxury Suites Fisher Island or Fisher Island Club and Hotel. 

The Fisher Island Club isn’t just a hotel. It also has a spectacular saltwater pool, a 9-hole golf course, tennis courts, a fitness center, and more. The club also has a number of upscale dining options. So if you’re looking for a luxurious and exclusive Florida getaway, Fisher Island is an excellent option for you. 

Key Biscayne

If we head just south of Fisher Island, we’ll find Key Biscayne. This is another beautiful island in the Miami area, albeit more accessible than Fisher Island. In fact, you can drive onto Key Biscayne via the Rickenbacker Causeway. Key Biscayne is a beautiful island with two spectacular natural areas: Crandon Park and Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park, the latter of which is home to the 19th-century Cape Florida Lighthouse. 

Located near Key Biscayne you’ll find a coastal barrier reef and the only federally recognized underwater archeological trail in the country, making it an excellent destination for scuba divers and snorkelers. There are a number of apartment rentals and beach resorts on the island, but for those looking for more upscale accommodation options, you can rent a room at the Ritz-Carlton.  

Florida Keys Islands

Finally, let’s head southwest from the mainland and check out these true island gems of the Florida Keys. 

Islamorada

Islamorada is not one island but actually six! Islamorada is made up of Plantation Key, Windley Key, Upper Matecumbe Key, Lower Matecumbe Key, and the offshore islands of Indian Key and Lignumvitae Key. This village of islands is an excellent place to visit if you like fishing, as it has some of the best saltwater fishing in the world. 

This collection of islands is also an excellent destination for snorkelers. One of the most popular attractions in Islamorada is the Theater of the Sea (which by the way, is also dog-friendly!), where you can enjoy interactive dolphin exhibits, sea turtle experiences, and more. You’ll find a number of resorts on Islamorada’s various islands, as well as vacation rentals. 

Little Palm Island

Little Palm Island is unique in that the entire island is a private resort! One of the most exclusive resort islands in Florida, Little Palm Island is located just south of Ramrod Key, and the resort offers a motor yacht service to bring guests in from Little Torch Key. This adults-only island is an ideal destination for a relaxing and romantic getaway. There are no televisions nor telephones in any of the rooms, so the resort is perhaps the perfect place to disconnect from the rest of the world. 

Little Palm Island Resort has a dining room, though private dining accommodations can also be made. The resort also has a spa, and you can sign up for a variety of other activities during your stay, such as kayaking, scuba diving, snorkeling, sailing, sky diving, and more. 

Dry Tortugas 

Dry Tortugas is actually a collection of seven small islands located about 70 miles from Key West. Dry Tortugas National Park can be accessed by seaplane or boat. This eco-tourism destination is one of the most interesting places to visit in the Sunshine State, thanks to its remote location and pristine landscape. 

You’ll find Fort Jefferson in Dry Tortugas National Park, which is the largest brick masonry structure in the Americas. The park is also an excellent place for scuba diving and snorkeling, thanks to its pristine waters and coral reefs. Believe it or not, less than 1% of Dry Tortugas National Park is dry ground, so you’ll certainly want to pack your bathing suit to make the most of these islands! Finally, you even have the option to camp on the park’s Garden Key. Just be sure to come prepared for a rustic and remote camping experience!

Florida has some incredible beaches for tourists visiting the area. Not only will you be able to enjoy the sun and sand during your stay, but also local dining and entertainment. Siesta Key and Miami South Beach are our top picks for tourists visiting Florida.

Siesta Beach

It’s a no-brainer, Siesta Key is the perfect destination for out-of-towners. In 2020, TripAdvisor name Siesta Beach the #1 beach in the United States and #11 in the world, and for good reason. Its unique white quartz sand is soft and stays cool even on the hottest of days, and the beach’s numerous amenities will help to ensure that your visit goes smoothly.

Siesta Beach has a large parking area conveniently located next to the beach, and the area is equipped with concession stands. There’s even a free trolley that will tool you around the island so you can visit the area’s numerous dining and shopping destinations.

One of the most interesting things about Siesta Key is its weekly drum circle performance. Every Sunday evening, about one hour before sunset, dozens of Siesta Key residents and visitors can join in on a free, community-organized drum circle on Siesta and Englewood Beaches. You can enjoy this unique and memorable experience all year round.

You’ll find Siesta Beach on Siesta Key, just about a 15-minute drive south of Sarasota. The island has plenty of lodging options, and you can find a number of hotels and condominiums within walking distance of the shore. For many, Siesta really is one of the best beaches in Florida!

Perhaps the most well-known tourist beach in the state, Miami South Beach has something to offer for every Florida visitor. However, we think that the best family beaches in Florida are St. Augustine Beach and Fort De Soto State Park & Beach.

St. Augustine Beach

Located on the northeast Florida coast, on Anastasia Island, St. Augustine beach offers fun and relaxation for the whole family. The beach features a covered beachside pavilion, a long fishing pier, a splash park, a sand volleyball court, and more. As you can see, there are activities for everyone in the family to enjoy.

If you’re looking to lounge, you can rent a big beach umbrella. Or for the more active members of your family, consider renting a surfboard, paddleboard, skimboard, or kayak. There are also plenty of inland activities in the near vicinity. You can check out the San Marco Fort in downtown St. Augustine or stroll the historic streets of the city’s colonial quarter.

You will find lots of family-friendly accommodations conveniently located near the beach, such as condominiums and extended stays. Or if you would rather stay on the mainland, the beach is just a 15-minute drive from downtown St. Augustine. Fortunately, the area offers ample parking options within walking distance of the shore.

Fort De Soto State Park & Beach

Located just south of St. Petersburg and St. Pete Beach, Fort De Soto State Park spans five islands that boast beautiful beaches and activities for kids and adults of all ages. Fort De Soto’s North Beach has been recommended by Parents Magazine as a great seaside destination for kids. Your little ones will love the pirate ship playground and tidal pool.

However, there’s something for everyone at Fort De Soto State Park and Beach. History lovers should check out the park’s fort and Quartermaster Museum. More active members of the family can hop on a bike and explore the park’s seven miles of paved trails or rent a canoe or kayak to get a firsthand glimpse at some of the manatees that inhabit the area.

Some of the other area beaches that deserve mention are Blue Mountain Beach and Grayton Beach State Park. Blue Mountain Beach, also located on the Gulf of Mexico some six miles up the coast from Santa Rosa Beach, is home to the highest elevation in South Walton County (a whopping 65 feet). Aside from breathtaking ocean views, Blue Mountain Beach boasts plenty of delicious dining options! From tacos to barbeque, and how could we forget the best-selling handmade ice cream?!

Along the same South Walton Gulf Coast, you’ll find Grayton Beach State Park. Santa Rosa Beach is the best destination for nature lovers. It offers a pristine coastline, fishing and paddling on the park’s inland lake, and four miles of forest trails. You can even stay overnight in one of the park’s comfortable cabins or set up camp at a rustic campsite.

If you’re coming in from out of town, you can fly into Destin Fort-Walton Beach Airport, which is located just 34 miles from Santa Rosa Beach. There are plenty of lodging options in the area, including beach resorts, vacation rentals, and seaside condominiums.

Favorite White Sand Beaches in Florida

White sand beaches are a Florida specialty, and many of these are regularly recognized as the best beaches in the state. The soft quartz sand found in these areas provides the perfect surface for seaside lounging. White sand beaches are undoubtedly some of the best beaches in Florida. We can’t exactly say where the best white sand beaches are in Florida as it depends on one’s preferences. But here are a few of our favorite white sand beaches: Pensacola Beach, Fort Myers Beach, and Naples Beach.

Pensacola Beach

Rated one of TripAdvisor’s Top 15 Beaches in the U.S. in 2021, Pensacola Beach is considered by many to be a can’t-miss destination on the Florida Gulf Coast. This beach is actually located on the barrier island of Santa Rosa (not to be confused with Santa Rosa Beach), which spans 18 miles of white sand beaches.

Pensacola Beach, found on the western tip of the Sunshine State, offers a variety of activities aside from lounging on its sugary sand. It’s a great area to take a dolphin cruise, or head out to the fishing pier and cast your line into the crystal clear waters.

Nature-lovers should check out the Pensacola Beach Eco-Trail, which leads visitors on a tour of the area’s flora and fauna. Keep an eye out for dolphins, reptiles, a variety of birds, and native plants. And for the more active of the bunch, try out some of the numerous water sports offered at Pensacola Beach, such as surfing, sailing, or jet skiing.

There are plenty of places to stay in the Pensacola Beach area, including hotels, vacation rentals, and bed & breakfasts. And when it comes to dining, you can choose between beachside restaurants, breweries, food trucks, and more.

Fort Myers Beach

You’ll find Fort Myers Beach on Estero Island, located just off of the southwest Florida coast. The island is connected to the mainland via Matanzas Pass Bridge and Bonita Beach Causeway, though there are plenty of hotels and other lodging options on the island.

Fort Myers Beach boasts seven miles of coastline on the Gulf of Mexico, showcasing soft, white, crystalline sand. The area is excellent for dolphin sightings, or head out on a relaxing catamaran sail. When you’re there, be sure to catch a sunset from the end of the beach’s fishing pier.

Conveniently located close to the shore you will find numerous restaurants and bars. And if you’re looking to get your shopping fix, head to Times Square, the heart of Estero Island’s downtown. Here you’ll find boutique shops, galleries of local artists, and plenty of outdoor dining options to refuel after a day on the town.

Another great excursion in the area is Lovers Key State Park. Here you can head out for a bike ride, do some fishing, or kayak alongside wild manatees. If you’re planning on driving in from out of town, know that there are various parking options at Fort Myers beach. You can find lots conveniently located close to the downtown or next to the beach.

Naples Beach

Naples Beach, or the Beach at Naples Pier, is a long stretch of coast that showcases soft white sand and unobstructed views of the Gulf of Mexico. Located less than a mile from downtown Naples, the area is within walking distance of the town’s numerous dining and shopping options.

The pier at Naples Beach stretches 1,000 feet into the Gulf, making it an ideal fishing spot. There is a concession stand conveniently located halfway down the pier, which sells fishing bait, snacks, and beach supplies. Beachgoers will enjoy the beach volleyball courts and warm turquoise waters, which are perfect for taking a dip.

There are plenty of parking options near the beach, ranging from metered to pay-by-space. There are even parking permits available for residents. You will also find convenient amenities located in close proximity to the shore, such as restrooms and various dining options.

Favorite Quiet Beaches in Florida

For those looking for a more toned-down environment, there are plenty of quiet beaches where you can sit back and relax. Forget about big parties, crazy adventure activities, or hoards of tourists. Our favorite quiet beaches in Florida are Sebastian Inlet State Park and Crescent Beach.

Sebastian Inlet State Park

Considered to be one of the best saltwater fishing areas off the east coast of Florida, Sebastian Inlet State Park offers three miles of untouched Atlantic beaches. Fishing fanatics can try their hand at catching some mackerel, snook, or bluefish. Meanwhile, surfers can head out to the break for some of the best surfing conditions you’ll find on the Eastern Seaboard.

Other relaxing activities include birding, shelling, and picnicking. There are also a couple of museums in the park, such as the Sebastian Fishing Museum and the McLarty Treasure Museum.

If you’re really looking for a quiet escape, reserve one of the park’s more than 50 campsites. Sites at the main campground are all equipped with electricity, picnic tables, and campfires, and nearby you will find restrooms and a Wi-Fi hotspot. And for the more rustic campers, check out the park’s primitive campground located at the Bayside Marina.

You will find Sebastian Inlet State Park along U.S. Route 1 between Palm Bay and Vero Beach. There are various parking options on the inlet, and more parking is available on the mainland near the south side of the park.

Crescent Beach

Located some ten miles down the coast from downtown St. Augustine, Crescent Beach is a quiet and relaxing Atlantic Ocean escape. This area is much less crowded than many other Florida beaches, making it the perfect option for beachgoers looking for rest and relaxation.

Its hard-packed sand makes it the ideal spot for long walks down the shore, beach volleyball, morning runs, bike rides, or even seaside horseback riding. Visitors who are looking to stay close to the shore have the option to rent beach houses, cottages, or condos in a convenient location.

If you’d rather drive into the area, there is an ample parking lot located within walking distance of the beach. The area also offers other amenities, such as restrooms, showers, picnic tables, and a pavilion.

If you really want to disconnect, head to Matanzas State Forest, which can be reached by car from the beach in about ten minutes. Here you can enjoy hiking, biking, bird watching, camping, and more. Best Shelling Beaches in Florida

If searching for shells is more your thing, there is no shortage of shelling beaches in the Sunshine State. You can find gorgeous conches and coveted sand dollars at our top picks for shelling in Florida: Turner Beach on Sanibel Island and Tigertail Beach on Marco Island.

Turner Beach

If you pay a visit to the Sanibel Island area, specifically Captiva, Turner Beach is your spot for seaside lounging and shelling. The area boasts over 250 different kinds of seashells native to the Gulf of Mexico and Caribbean region.

You will find Turner Beach along an approximately 15-mile stretch of beaches on the island. One of the reasons that we recommend Turner Beach is because it tends to be much less crowded than the other areas you pass before reaching our recommended spot. This means that the seashell offering is more abundant and diverse than what you might find at other, more popular beaches.

Once you’ve gotten your share of shell hunting, there are plenty of other things to do in the area. Turner Beach is also an excellent fishing spot. Head out on the beach’s rock jetty to cast your line or simply snap some beautiful pictures.

Turner Beach is about a 45-minute drive from Fort Myers, and there is a parking lot conveniently located right next to the beach. But there are also lodging options on the island if you would like to stay nearby. You can find cottages, vacation rentals, apartments, and more on Captiva Island, or stay next door on Sanibel Island, where you can find a variety of places to stay.

Tigertail Beach

Head to the southwest coast of the state and you’ll find Marco Island among the mangroves and Everglades. Marco Island is a well-known Florida Gulf Coast getaway. Though the area as a whole is highly developed (resort hotels and golf courses abound), Tigertail Beach is a natural escape.

The beach is a Collier County park, and you’ll find a paid parking area, a snack bar, and changing rooms at the developed part of the beach. But once you cross the beach’s roughly 50-yard-long lagoon, you’ll find yourself along three miles of untouched coastline.

Its challenging access is what has helped to preserve Tigertail Beach. Once you make the 15-20 minute trek across the lagoon, you’ll be able to search for an endless amount of gorgeous shells while dolphins swim offshore and ospreys fill the air.

Once you’re ready to head back to civilization, you’ll find plenty of things to do on Marco Island. Take a sightseeing boat tour, play a round of golf, or check out the Marco Island Historical Museum. The area also has a great offering of shopping and dining options.

What is Shark Tooth Hunting All About?

What is shark tooth hunting you ask? Perhaps you are visiting Florida or just moved to the area, you might have heard of this and wondered what it’s all about. This is especially true if you moved to Venice, Florida – because it’s everywhere!

Similar to combing the sand for seashells or other lost beach treasure, shark teeth are also washed up along the shores, free for the taking and you won’t even need to use a metal detector! Sharks have been gliding through the salty ocean waters for millions of years.

When a shark’s life has come to an end, while most of the body is either fed upon by other sea life or disintegrates back into the ocean waters (circle of life and all that) their teeth remain left behind and after thousands of years, they fossilize.

Over time, these teeth have been stirred up and moved around in the ocean waves until one day they were discovered cropping up along the shorelines with the seashells, enticing beachcombers to begin hunting for these treasures. In searching for shark teeth you will discover that the teeth won’t be very large. While they will vary in size, the teeth will remain within the same size range meaning what you will be looking for will be a triangle that is roughly 1/8” to 3/4″ – perhaps even a bit larger but nothing too large and imposing.

Shark’s teeth can also be found in varying colors depending on what sort of sediment they fossilized in, but most likely the teeth you find will be darker in color or black and a bit glossy when the light hits them.

Why Go Shark Tooth Hunting?

If you have been to a beach, I am sure you have noticed that scattered along the boardwalks are usually little shops which you have no doubt popped into at some point for the odd bottle of sunscreen or new beach towel.

In these shops you will find all sorts of ocean trinkets and crafts and have more than likely come across items such as shark tooth necklaces, maybe you have even purchased one before but what if the tooth you wore around your neck was actually a tooth that you found yourself?

This is just one of the reasons shark tooth hunting has become a popular pastime.

While you can find shark teeth on the east coast Florida sands of places like Jupiter Beach, Amelia Island and St. Augustine beach, the Florida shores surrounding the Gulf of Mexico are also teeming with excellent places for shark tooth hunting along the shores of Casey Key, and Manasota Key.

What’s so special about Caspersen Beach? Why, it’s only the shark tooth capital of the world!

You heard that right, Caspersen Beach in Venice, FL is the mecca for all things shark’s tooth. Now this might get you thinking, “why here?” Well the good news is that we know why, but for that story we need to journey back millions of years, over 10 million years to the prehistoric past. Back in the day, Florida as we know it didn’t exist, in fact it was completely submerged underwater.

Why Are There So Many Shark Teeth in Venice, Florida?

During those days a great variety of sharks hung out in these waters including the now extinct but previously massive megalodon. Over a shark’s liftetime they are known to lose hundreds of teeth, multiply that by the large amount of sharks roaming the waters and what you are left with is an ocean floor filled with discarded teeth prime for fossilization.

After the waters lowered and Florida emerged, the tides have kept churning and through that churning, they dig up these awesome fossils along with other sediment and shells stirring them up until they eventually land up on the shoreline for us to find. The best places to find these beach treasures are going to be near a rocky jetty or inlets – places where you see a lot of shells, corals, rocks or immediately in the line where the waves are crashing onto the shore.

What Equipment Do I Need to Go Shark Tooth Hunting?

Shark Tooth Hunting can be great fun for the whole family and the best part is, it won’t cost you a ton to get started. First thing you need is the desire for the hunt, second is a tool for digging, and skimming/sifting the sand and shells luckily this can be something as simple as your hands or a strainer from your kitchen.

Many beachside shops will have tools that you can buy or rent to use during your hunting expedition, items such as the “Venice Snow Shovel”. You can find small sifters that you hold in your hand or even fancy sifters that will float out on the water! Don’t want to buy anything new? Well, if you have kids that like to build sandcastles – just steal their toys for the day.

If you really want to be creative there are plenty of tutorials to be found online that will help you build your own sifter to make you the shark tooth hunting pro you have always wanted to be. Some people like to use a small spade type shovel to gather the sand, shells and teeth with, while others prefer their hands, and still others prefer a scoop – it doesn’t matter how you do it, with enough determination you are bound to find something great.

Which brings us to one of the most important items of all. When going shark tooth hunting the most important item that you can have with you is, somewhere to put your treasure! This can really be anywhere of your choosing but if the plan is to take your finds home with you, don’t forget to pack something to carry sed finds.

Once you begin to amass your new shark tooth collection, you may be asking yourself what kind you have. You’re in luck there too! Many shops in the area will also carry handy guidebooks to help you identify your finds so you can be well on your way to collecting them all.

Shark Tooth Hunting Techniques

Once you have all of your hunting tools together it is time to find the teeth. Lucky for you, you don’t need years of experience to be good at finding shark’s teeth. It can be as simple as strolling along the beach, picking up the occasional handful of sand and sifting through it, but if you really want results there are faster ways.

As mentioned previously, the good places to find these treasures are places where waves crash up and then leave things behind such as shells, rocks, bits of coral and teeth. Once you find a nice spot you can dig in with your shovel, scoop it up into your sifter and then sift through.

Chances are you will find a lot of cool interesting bits from the ocean in there and in Venice with a big scoop you are very likely to find at least one tooth in each batch but since they are small you do need to sift carefully, really looking at each piece so that you don’t accidentally discard a tooth that you mistook for a piece of coral.

Another spot to look is where the waves are currently crashing up or just into the water where the sand dips down a bit more abruptly, just reach down into the water to the bottom, and pull up a scoop full of goodness to take back to the beach and sift through.

There isn’t a specific time of day that is best for this activity, the biggest factor here is the tide, when it is coming in hard, receding and maybe if there is a storm that has recently come through and really stirred up the ocean to leave even more items onshore than usual.

Yes…You Can Keep the Shark Teeth You Find! (and you won’t get in trouble)

Many fossil sites in Florida are legally protected, meaning that you are either not allowed to collect them, or only allowed to do so with a permit. Shark’s teeth remain an exception on this point because there are just so many of them to be found in Florida so why not get yourself a free souvenir?

Do be mindful, that while these sharks teeth won’t bite, it is still illegal to dig deep into multiple layers of public land as this can negatively disrupt the eco-system. There will be plenty of teeth to be found up near the top without much effort on your part, so let’s keep things near the surface and continue to allow our natural lands to live their best lives.

Shark Tooth Hunting is a Fun Activity that Everyone in the Family Can Enjoy!

The great thing about shark tooth hunting is that it is an activity for all ages! No heavy equipment required, no long term training, and you don’t even have to wake up at 5am to do it. It can be a leisurely activity you take part in while watching the sunset or it can be an all out competition to see who can get the most teeth, the biggest, the most variety, the most interesting, or the best colors.

Seriously, you can even make scorecards, winners get ice cream! Or everyone can celebrate their collection at lunch or dinner at the famous Sharky’s Restaurant in Venice! It can be a solo adventure, or a team effort. We’ve been lucky to be able to take Hana to a number of dog beaches over the years during our travels, from up and down the California coast and over to the Atlantic Ocean too. She’s also been able to splash her paws in the warm, clear Gulf of Mexico!

However, we’ve discovered that it’s not always easy to find dog friendly beaches in Florida – even though there are so many beaches!

Luckily, Sarasota County is the perfect location for pet owners and beach lovers alike.  If you love enjoying the sun, surf, and sea with your four-legged best friend, then you are in luck because there is a fantastic dog beach located just a few miles south of Sarasota in Venice, Florida; the Brohard Dog Beach and Paw Park. 

In fact, this dog friendly beach in Florda is actually why we decided to move to Venice! (crazy…but it’s actually true)

Sarasota’s World Famous Beaches

Before we deep dive into puppers’ heavenly shores, let’s discover what it’s like to live in Sarasota. Home to multiple islands that line the beautiful coast, Sarasota’s beaches are stunning and each holds its own unique charm. Amongst the most famous are Longboat Key, Lido Key, Siesta Key, and Venice Beaches. 

Located in the northernmost region of the county, Longboat Key is a popular destination for those who want a quiet yet luxurious beach lifestyle. It’s also a wonderful area for wildlife enthusiasts and those who enjoy Florida nature and quiet at its finest. This part of the coast is home to a few sea turtle species and on this beach, they nest and lay their eggs. In fact, sea turtles nest all along the coastline and keys in Sarasota and to the south!

Lido Key and Lido Beach is one of the closest to downtown Sarasota and is a wonderfully wide stretch of white sand beach. This beach is also nearby the famous St. Armands Circle, a high-end area for dining and shopping day and night.

Siesta Key, on the other hand, is the beach of choice for families and vacationers year-round. It’s much more lively with things to do, shops, and events. The area can also be a lot of fun at night with visitors and locals who enjoy beach nightlife and fun. 

Finally, Venice just a few miles south of Sarasota, is home to a handful of beautiful beaches as well. This area is popular with locals, visitors in the know, and seasonal residents.

Are Dogs Allowed on Siesta Key Beach or Any Other Beach in Sarasota?

While all of these beaches are lovely and great for both locals and visitors, the key question is are dogs allowed on beaches in Florida?  Well sadly, the answer is no – for the most part!

Dogs are not allowed on any of the public beaches up in the city of Sarasota. This includes Siesta Key, so you are not allowed to take your dogs on the beach in Siesta Key. The same is true for Lido Beach, Longboat Beaches, etc. Even most of the public beaches in Venice do not allow dogs!

** NOTE: We are referring to public beaches. It’s true that there are some private beaches areas on these keys, where you may be permitted to bring your pup. 

But Don’t Fret! There Is an Option for the Doggos Who Love the Beach!

For those of you in the Sarasota area who do want to be able to bring your dog for a fun beach day, then you just need to head south of the Venice fishing pier to the South Brohard beach area. This is where you will find the only dog beach in Venice Florida – Brohard Beach and Paw Park. 

Venice boasts Brohard Dog Beach – Sarasota, Florida’s ONLY Dog Beach

The Brohard Dog Beach is truly a little slice of tropical paradise for man’s best friend. This Venice dog beach has everything your little pup might need and want. At the parking entrance there is actually a fully fenced in dog park. It’s a wonderful park too, with grass, trees, benches, water fountains for the dogs, as well as a dog-washing area! There are also separate fenced areas for both small and large dogs.

But if it’s the beach you are searching for, then just follow the paved walkway inside the fenced dog park area — that will lead you to gates that go out the back of the dog park. Going beyond those back gates, you can follow a paved (and fenced) pathway that leads you out to a boardwalk.  And just over that boardwalk is what you are searching for…the fine sands and saltwater you’ve been searching for!

The Brohard dog beach in Venice is open daily from 7 am to dusk.

Does My Dog Need to Be Leashed at The Venice Brohard Dog Beach?

When you are in the fenced “paw park” area, your dog does not need to be leashed. Just like any other fenced dog park, your pup and run and play untethered. The same is true for the dog beach too!

The Brohard Dog Beach in Venice is an off-leash dog beach!!! 

So your dog can have the time of their life just running around on the sand, chasing and playing with other dogs without the inconvenience of being tethered to you. They can also run and play in the waves or even go swimming out in the Gulf. We often see owners throwing balls out into the water and tiring their pups out who love to go swimming to fetch the ball!

Dogs Under Voice Control & Be Aware

Since this is an off-leash dog park, it is important that your dog be well-behaved and be under voice control at all times. This is really important to the atmosphere and safety of all the dogs…and humans!

There are signs where the boundaries of the dog area is, so be sure that your dog stays within that boundary. Also, keep in mind that your dog will be able to go up to other people and dogs, and other dogs will likely come to say “hi” to you too!

Can I Swim at the Brohard Dog Beach?

YES!!! We get this question quite a lot, but yes, the Brohard Dog Beach is actually a wonderful beach for swimming! It is nestled between other beaches that are popular with humans, including the North Brohard Beach which is home to the Venice fishing pier and the famous Sharky’s on the Pier Restaurant.

This is a really popular area for beaches because the sand is soft, and water is warm, clean and on many days quite calm. The Brohard Dog Beach is actually a great place to bring your beach gear and have a full-on beach day. You can have a picnic, swim, and enjoy yourself!

How to Get to the Brohard Dog Beach & Paw Park in Venice

The Brohard Paw Park and is easily accessible. It is located at 1600 S. Harbor Drive, Venice, Florida. As mentioned above, it is just south of the Venice Fishing Pier and the famous Sharky’s restaurant. So if you follow your GPS to Sharky’s, just keep going a bit further south on the road and you will see signs for the Brohard Dog beach on the right. 

The Brohard Dog Beach is also north of Caspersen Beach. So if you see the Caspersen Beach signs, then you have gone too far. 

More Beaches in Venice (for Humans) 

There is more to living in Venice, FL than just the Brohard Dog Beach. Sarasota, after all, is known across the country for its amazing year-round weather and equally delightful shorelines. So it only makes sense that some of the best beaches can be found in Venice!

Just to the south of Brohard Dog Beach is a humans-only beach that is equipped with a boardwalk, benches and tables, as well as showers for humans. 

If you are keen on a 5-minute drive, Caspersen Beach is a stones throw away from the dog park. This rocky beach is known as the longest beach in the county of Sarasota. Aside from laying in the sun and enjoying the water, Caspersen is also a destination for tourists on the hunt for shark teeth! (seriously, it’s famous for the shark teeth!)

1 . Siesta Key – Siesta Beach

Siesta Key offers 3 glorious beaches that you could choose from. One is the main Siesta beach. It is the ultimate destination with its white sand and contrasting turquoise-water. The sand is composed of 99% quartz from the mountains of Appalachian and it sparkles like diamonds under the sun. It is the most popular among the 3 beaches and more crowded. Located at the northern end of Siesta Key where you can sunbathe, stroll , boat and fish all day.

There are a couple of hotels and cabanas ranging from $60 to $50 per night (and go much higher for the nicer resorts) which are walking distance from the beach for overnight stays. You can find playgrounds for kids and the entire beach is lifeguarded for extra safety. Park hours are from 6am to 12 midnight.

Not only is Siesta Key one of the best beaches in Sarasota, but it’s also known as one of the top beaches in the USA!

2 . Siesta Key – Crescent Beach

A bit further from Siesta Beach is another part of Siesta Key, The Crescent Beach area. It is located on the southern part of Siesta Key with a much quieter, peaceful and serene atmosphere. The sand is hard-packed and it is great for activities such as volleyball, bike rides and frisbee. The waves are excellent for watersports such as surfing and boogie boarding. And of course, let’s not forget about the famous Point of Rocks found at the southern tip of the beach where you can snorkel and enjoy the magical coral formation underwater.

This beautiful beach is a part of a developing community with commercial establishments that offers dine-ins and accommodations to tourists. Here are some of the spots where you can drink and dine: Tony’s Pizza which serves vegetarian-friendly Italian pizza, Island Ice Cream Cafe is less than a mile away from the beach to quench your thirst and indulge you with desserts and The Crescent Beach Bar and Grill if your looking for nightlife drinking and music.

Facilities available on the beach are seasonally staffed lifeguards, pavilions for large family gatherings, picnic tables and showers. They also offer an off-beach parking and horse-back riding but only at designated time and with special permits. Vehicle to access the beach are very limited on Cubbedge Road so access fee for driving on the beach is charged from March to August.

3 Siesta Key – Turtle Beach

This paradise is at the southern end of the Siesta Key. In fact, many locals will say this is the best beach in Sarasota. That’s because if you want a much quiet and less crowded open space, then this is the best choice for you. the sand is not as soft as the northern part of the beach since it is more dark and coarse but it has a little mix of seashells that beachcombers and shell finders/collectors will enjoy. With its slightly remote location you can find yourself more relax with nature without the bothersome jangle from a crowd and you get to enjoy the sprawling view of crystal clear waters.

It has also been known as one of the best camping grounds for campers and adventure-seekers. The Turtle Beach Campground is one of the county’s camping grounds that has a direct access to the beach. The beach offers bike rentals, picnic areas, a playground for kids and horse-shoe pit for activities. Showers and public restrooms are also available nearby and a lot of spots to park you vehicles.

There are less waves in this area and the water is relatively calm perfect for water activities such as kayaking and paddle boarding. Fishing can also be enjoyed at the boat launch area or the Blind Pass Lagoon nearby.

4 . Lido Beach (On Lido Key – closest to downtown Sarasota)

Lido beach is known for its powdery sugar-white sand and clean waters. It is located in between the Siesta Key and Longboat Keys. It has more of a laid-back kind of vibe and packed with luxurious homes and vacation rentals nearby. The beach is 0.25 miles away from St. Armand’s Circle which is the Island shopping center that provides modish shopping and upscale dinning. It is a public beach with plenty of parking space that could accommodate approximately 400 vehicles per day. Amenities includes concession stands, cabana rentals, gift shops and restrooms.

The beach is well kept and spacious but not suitable for swimming but a walking distance away from restaurants where you can have a banquet of fresh seafoods and refreshing drinks.

5 . Longboat Key Beaches (northwest of Sarasota)

Long Boat Key’s beaches feature a wonderful view of the Gulf of Mexico. Longboat Key is a town located in the counties of Mantinee and Sarasota along the central west coast of the state of Florida. It is on the southern part of Anna Maria Island and somewhere in the middle of Sarasota Bay and the Gulf of Mexico. It is also know for its 12 mile stretch of white sand and perfect blue waters. Home to more than 6,000 residents and breathtaking beaches. Where you can find delightful choices of fresh seafood, luxury resorts and beach houses rentals that will make your vacation a heaven sent bliss.

Visit the famous Instagram worthy photo spot called the Beer Can Island found on the northern part of town just before the Longboat Key Bridge. The area is underdeveloped but a popular hangout spots for locals. Another must-see location to add to the list is the Whitney Beach at the north end part of the town right across the Whitney Plaza.

A quarter mile long shore of white sand stretching southward passing by high condominiums that will make you fall in love with the place all over again. A public parking area is provided for your convenience along the Broadway Street and West of Gulf of Mexico Drive.

6 . Coquina Beach (even more north)

Enjoy the pearly white sand of Coquina Beach located on the Southern part of Anna Maria Island. A perfect place to ease and cool off with its calm waters and natural beauty. It is lined with a paved path under the shady pine trees for biking and strolling and volleyball courts for sports activities. Some of its amenities includes benches, bike racks, game tables, barbeque grills, picnic tables and playground. You will also find gift shops, water fountains and concessions such as Coquina Beach Cafe to buy your drinks nearby.

The beach also has a boat launch spot across the street from the beach where you can do fishing with a great view of the coastline. Parking areas are provided from sunrise to midnight for free.

7 . Bradenton Beach (north)

A small town on Anna Maria Island with a population of approximately 1, 300 residents known for its bizarre strips of shops, restaurants, finest sand beaches and fishing piers. The locals are eager to show off their products such as handmade clothing, soaps and art galleries. It has the ambience of a cozy coastal town where tourists all over the world visit to experience the beautiful atmosphere and have a taste of its rich heritage of commercial seafoods. Visitors are allowed to board fishing charters and go on swimming excursions.

The beach is clean and family-oriented where you can set up tents and camp until sunset. They have a limited parking spaces but you are allowed to park at the side of the street or one of the beaches’ access point.

8 . Nokomis Beach (south of Sarasota)

Located south of Sarasota, Nokomis is more of a combination of nature and sandy beach. The people are warm and welcoming and the beach is less crowded than Siesta Key’s tourist center.  Beach combing and shell collecting in search of these sea treasure has become a popular activity for tourists. It is famous for its beautiful sunset and drum circle that one has to experience. They also have concession stands that sells food and alcohol Like nearby beaches parking can also be a little tricky reason why you have to come early if you wanted to visit.

9. Venice Beach (south of Nokomis)

Another must-see destination found just south of Nokomis and north of Englewood. Venice is popular because it’s known as the “shark tooth capital of the world” — since you can find so many of these shark teeth at the beaches around town. Venice Beach is a popular public beach just west of historic downtown Venice that offers pavilions for picnics and concession stand. It also has a public restroom and showers for all day use. It has a limited free parking space near the beach but gets a little congested when the beach gets crowded.

10. Brohard Dog Beach (south of Venice Beach)

For those of you who want to bring your 4-legged furry friend with you to the beach, you need to know that the only public dog beach in Sarasota county is at South Brohard Dog Beach in Venice, Florida.

At this beach you can let your fur-babies off the leash and let them run wild to their heart’s content. It has a wheelchair board walk that has access to the beach area, benches, litter receptacle, leash posts, dog showers and drinking fountains for human and for your dogs as well.

The beach has a mix of sunny and shady area where pet owners can rest and hangout while watching their dogs swim and run around. It is open daily from 7am to dusk.

A quick drive to the east or the west will bring you to places where you can see all the way out to the horizon line without a rollercoaster or I-4 blocking your view. What are these magical places? Beaches! Deciding you want to go to the beach is easy. However, choosing which one from the best beaches nearby Orlando you want to visit can get overwhelmingly tricky. That is why we hope to help you streamline this decision to get you loaded up, in the car, and on the road in the right direction quicker.

What are the Best Beaches Near Orlando?

Here we have listed 8 beaches under 2 ½ hours from Orlando that will be the perfect fit for your long-awaited beach getaway.

Cocoa Beach

They don’t call it the “Beachline” for nothing! Less than an hour-long drive on the 528 toward the Atlantic– that’s how far Cocoa Beach is from Orlando. Famous for its surfing spots and surfing shops, Cocoa is home to the Florida Surf Museum, where you can learn more about your favorite sport. Proximity-wise, Cocoa Beach is your best bet as it’s the closest you can get away to from Orlando. If you want to enjoy the sun, sand, and stars with some cocktails, Coconuts on the Beach is one of the hottest spots around to hang out and socialize.

Meanwhile, if you are looking for a quieter place for a good breather, go a bit south along the beach to Lori Wilson Park, where you will not only find parking and beach access but even a dog park where you can surround yourself with enthusiastic dogs and pups. After some fun times with man’s best friend, end your day at the Cocoa Beach Pier. Located on the north end of the beach, dine in an array of restaurants and watering holes. We assure you! You won’t be bored when you visit Cocoa Beach– we consider it one of the best beach towns in Florida!

Located off the A1A as far north as Arthur Ave down the coastline to 30th st, you will find 4 different parks to grant you access to the beach as well as popular stores like Cocoa Beach Surf Company and Ron Jon Surf shop, be on the lookout for some of the shops! Some even have free beach parking available to the public if you into walking a couple of blocks. But there is also plenty of metered parking available right at the beach if you don’t feel like going for a stroll.

New Smyrna Beach

Head up I-4 East to the FL 44, and you will soon find yourself at New Smyrna Beach where access can be seen from many spots off Flagler Ave Beachfront Park. This beach has drive-on access and is also a popular spot for beach cycling. On Flagler Avenue, you will find plenty of shops and eateries to keep your stomachs busy. And with New Smyrna’s over 13 miles of sand, you’re almost always guaranteed to find a great place to park and enjoy the day.

With great big waves, this best beach nearby Orlando offers the kind of waves you want and need, making it a popular surfing location, especially up north by the inlet. But like all good things, you should pay extra caution as this is also a popular location for shark bites. While shark bites aren’t as dangerous as Hollywood movies will lead us to believe, this is still something to be wary of.

Bringing a furry friend that also loves the beach? Smyrna Dunes Park, located at the north end of the beach, has dog-friendly beach areas on its borders, but be aware that dogs are prohibited on other areas of this beach for their own safety as many cars and bikes are riding up and down these sands all day.

Daytona Beach

Want to get away to the beach, but have someone in your party that isn’t a “beachy” person? Then Daytona just might be your answer. Head out to the Atlantic coast a bit north of Orlando, and you will find what is known as the “World’s Most Famous Beach.” Nearby, the non-beach goer can visit the famous Daytona Speedway, where they can enjoy a tour of the track and facilities while you enjoy some fun in the sun. There is no need to worry about parking here as you can drive your car right onto the beach to ensure you are close to the action.

The Daytona Boardwalk is home to fun games and rides as well as sidewalk performers, and if luck is by your side, you just might be able to catch a fun concert at the Daytona Beach Bandshell. If your friends are the competitive type, turn it up a notch and play a game of who could get the lowest priced seats. For reference, it can go as low as $4. Aside from these, you will also find many nearby beach shops, hot dog stands, ice cream carts, as well as staples like Joe’s Crab Shack, where you can eat to your heart’s content.

This beach is an easy drive from Orlando, just up I-4 East and out to US 92. When you reach the A1A you will have landed at the heart of Daytona Beach in just an hour. If you’d rather drive your vehicle nearby the beach, there are free beach parking lots peppered up and down the A1A, as well as ocean-front parking garages.

Clearwater Beach

If the Gulf side seems more your speed, but would much rather stay at a lively white sand beach near Orlando, explore Clearwater Beach. Because of its fine white sand and pristine waters, Clearwater Beach has always been included in several lists of America’s best beaches. Honestly, it’s not that difficult to understand why.

Roughly 2hrs from Orlando due west and just past Tampa, the inviting waters of Clearwater Beach hosts a nightly sunset party at Clearwater’s Pier 60. The pier and sidewalks surrounding it will fill with vendors, street performers, and artists, and on certain nights you will even find a live band and dance floor available for all to enjoy. There is also no shortage of fun at Clearwater. You can take your pick of daytime as well as sunset dinner cruises (even a pirate ship!). Or check something off your bucket list like riding a speed boat, driving a jet ski, or go on a parasailing adventure and truly deep dive on why it’s one of the best beaches nearby Orlando, or even in the country.

To visit, all you have to do is go west on I-4 until you get to FL 60 and take that until you quite literally run into the action of the beach. There are meters available beachfront, or you can follow the road down a bit south to find free street parking on any side streets. Clearwater is an excellent spot for locally-owned restaurants. From cheap beachside burger stands to incredible seafood restaurants, whatever you may be craving for, you got it here!

St. Pete Beach

With the lovely white soft sand along the gulf side, you will also find a lovely stretch of one of the best beaches near Orlando. The open beach offers plenty for the whole family to enjoy, from kayaking to sandcastles to dolphin spotting. Located 2 hours and 15 minutes Southwest of Orlando, St. Pete Beach is here for your entertainment, making it one of the most famous beaches near Orlando.

This beach has a quieter vibe than places like Clearwater, but not as quiet as Indian Rocks, with a bit more happening for the kids while being far from a “spring break” type of beach. While here, make sure to check out The Don CeSar, a luxury pink hotel that opened in 1928. With history made right up their sleeve, you can simply check out the classic architecture and its history. Or you can find one of the local sightseeing companies that lead two-hour ghost tours regarding the suspected hauntings of this hotel.

To get to St. Pete Beach, you will need to get to I-4 west and turn south once you hit Tampa; this drive will take you through St Pete, past Florida Orange Groves Winery (if a wine stop is on your agenda). Then, right on out Pasadena Ave to FL 699 and the beach. Most of the parking you will find here will be metered street parking, but there is plenty of spots to choose from.

Madeira Beach

Named after the legendary pirate John Levique, John’s Pass Village & Boardwalk in Madeira Beach is full of pirate and beachy character chock. They have over 100 vendors from restaurants to specialty shops! From here, you can embark on day-long fishing excursions, sunset cruises, or just enjoy some good dolphin watching from the Boardwalk in between your sunbathing and swimming adventures on Madeira’s 2.5-mile beach.

If you enjoy seafood, this is the place for you! Make it extra special by planning to visit in October when Madeira Beach plays host to the Seafood Festival at John’s Pass, a festival known to attract more than 125,000 visitors. Better SEAS the opportunity and be one of those visitors!

2hrs and 10min outside of Orlando, you will find a scenic beach and a boardwalk in this quaint town by FL 699. There are many beach lots along with a large 6-floor parking garage to accommodate the daily visitors.

Indian Rocks Beach

Located just south of the famous Clearwater Beach is the small beach of Indian Rocks. At just under 2miles, this beach provides beautiful white soft sands and stunning sunsets, similar to what you see at Clearwater, but with less fuss.

If a quiet day at the beach with your book is what you are looking for, this nearby beach in Orlando is right up your alley. Indian Rocks has all the basics you love to have for a day of fun in the sun and sand without all the tourists buzzing around. After a day of soaking up the rays, there are plenty of local restaurants to check out, like JD’s. It’s famous for having some of the best live entertainment in the area. Their dance floor will most definitely be hopping both inside the restaurant and out on the deck.

A 2 hour and 15-minute drive west from Orlando to the Gulf, off FL 688, will get you to this little slice of paradise. A great perk of this beach is the amount of available parking. Since so many people stop in Clearwater and are too buzzed to travel this far down the gulf coast.

Vero Beach

If you like a side of nature with your suntan, head a bit further southeast, and you will find yourself at Vero Beach. It has everything you could want from a beachside town:

• Locals riding bikes up and down the beachside walks
• Sidewalk cafes
• Unique shops
• Beachside restaurants of all varieties

You will find numerous restaurants along the beachline in the winter that will serve you a delicious breakfast with a sunrise view.

This beach isn’t just high traffic for travellers but also one of the best beaches near Orlando for sea turtles to nest; depending on the time of year, you may even see some in the flesh though it’s best not to approach them too close.

While there, the Indian River Lagoon is a must-see so make sure to take a kayaking trip there and count how many manatees you visit!

You can get to this beach/nature oasis in just under 2 hours from Orlando. Head south to I-95 or the 528 to the A1A– if you are out for a joy ride and not concerned about timing. You can take A1A along the coast all the way down and admire the architecture and beachside towns along the way. Popular locations to access this beach are Riomar Drive at Ocean drive on the south end and Jaycee Park at Mango Rd and Ocean Drive to the north, these roads can be found right off the A1A.

A Great Beach Day Isn’t Far from Orlando!

1. Venice Beach/ Venice Municipal Beach

Venice Beach is the main beach in town. Located on the main street of Venice Avenue, you can drive west through downtown and the end of the road at the Gulf of Mexico is the beach. Venice Beach is a favorite spot for visitors and locals in the area because of its convenient location to downtown and a number of condos and homes in this area. In fact, the beach is only a short walking distance from downtown and is a popular destination for an afternoon stroll or picnic.

And you most mornings or evenings they have FREE yoga classes on Venice Beach (great for beginners too!).

Venice Beach has free parking (as do all the beaches in this area), as well as showers, bathrooms, two sand volleyball courts, boardwalks, picnic areas, and there is also a food concession stand in the parking area near the entrance to the beach.

There is also a newly installed wheelchair-accessible pathway out onto the sand, which is a really great addition so that even those with mobility issues can experience this beautiful beach!

Even though the Gulf of Mexico is calmer than the Atlantic side of Florida, when the wind is up there are some waves here. And Venice Beach is a popular spot for surfers in the area, so coming out here on a windy day will give you a show! Venice Beach is also popular for divers and snorkelers. The north end of the beach is the Jetty, where snorkelers can find fish among the rocks. And divers enjoy the coral reef which is situated about a quarter of a mile offshore, attracting various marine life and beautiful coral species.

We place Venice Beach high on our list of beaches in the area simply because of the convenient location in town for visitors and locals who are staying near downtown. Venice Beach also has manned lifeguard stations, which provide extra assurance and safety.

2. Caspersen Beach

The gem of the area really is Caspersen Beach. This is a stunning beach for those who prefer a more rugged type of beach. It is often described as uncultivated, windswept, and wonderfully quiet. In fact, there are no buildings on this beach. No condos, no hotels, not even houses in this area!

The beach lies to the south of Venice and occupies over 9000 feet of property. Two-thirds of the beachfront has been left in its natural form and is incredibly peaceful. Caspersen really is one of the prettiest beaches we’ve seen. Beach lovers come here for the swimming, snorkeling among some of the rocks, and fishing. It has nice facilities, such as a boardwalk, recently renovated bathrooms, and free parking! However, there is no lifeguard stands at this beach, so swim at your own risk.

Another reason Caspersen Beach is so popular is for the fossilized shark teeth that Venice, Florida is famous for. This is one of the top beaches to hunt for these pre-historic treasures, so you’ll see a lot of people sifting through the sand looking for teeth.

Caspersen Beach also has a launch for canoes and kayaks into the Venetian Intracoastal Waterway. Perfect for those who want to explore and check out some of the wildlife in the area. Note – the Waterway is not the open ocean. It is the canal that connects to the ocean.

3. Brohard Beach and Venice Fishing Pier

Brohard Beach is another one of the most popular Venice Florida beaches because this is where you will find the famous 700-foot long Venice Fishing Pier. Even if you aren’t a fisherman you can enjoy the panoramic views of the blue water and beaches from the pier. Of all the things to do in Venice, visiting the pier is a popular choice for visitors and even locals too.

Another reason this area is popular is because of it’s located at the entrance to the pier is the famous Sharky’s on the Pier restaurant, the only beachfront restaurant and tiki bar in Venice. Visitors and locals alike come out to Sharky’s on a nice day for lunch, dinner, or just drinks and to admire the views – which are especially lovely at sunset!

The Venice fishing pier is free to access, and you also don’t need a fishing license to fish from the pier. If you don’t have fishing gear don’t worry, they actually have some for rent right up on the pier itself.

Brohard Beach is sizable, wide, and beautiful. It also has a reputation for being a hunting ground for shark teeth. The beach has several access points off Harbor Drive. It has plenty of free parking as well as boardwalks and restrooms too. However, again there are no lifeguards here.

The dog beach entrance is located right across from the Lake Venice golf course.

Best Dog Beach – at South Brohard Beach!

We also wanted to make a special note here that the southern part of Brohard Beach is where you will find one of the best dog beaches in all of Sarasota County (and much of Florida really). The Brohard Paw Park and Beach is located just off Harbor Drive (near the Venice Lake Golf Course). After parking, walk your dog through the fenced dog park and out the back gate – there is a fenced walkway that leads right to the beach!

This is an off-leash dog beach! So dogs can run and play freely here and enjoy the water. Be sure your dog is under voice control at all times, and be aware that other people’s dogs may want to come and say hi to you too.

4. Nokomis Beach

Nokomis Beach is technically in Nokomis rather than Venice, but it’s literally closer to downtown Venice than even Caspersen! Located just on the north side of the Jetty and bay area from downtown Venice, Nokomis Beach is one of Sarasota’s oldest public beaches. It is a popular choice among beachgoers since it is fun and has a social atmosphere and is very easy to get to.

Nokomis Beach has amazingly soft powdery sand and gorgeous blue waters that are iconic in the area.  The beach is an excellent place for spotting dolphins and manatees as well as going for a swim or paddle around. The beach also hosts drum circles at sunset on various nights of the week (currently Saturday and Wednesday). During the drum circles, the beach comes alive with dance and enchanting tribal music.

You will find amenities here including free parking, restrooms, playground, and picnic areas. And on the way, don’t forget to visit Pop’s Sunset Grill, which is one of the more popular restaurants in Venice for both visitors and locals!

5. North Jetty Beach

Barely south of Nokomis Beach near the North Jetty area is North Jetty Beach. It’s just across the way from the Venice South Jetty. This beach area is popular with families due to the amenities and activities here. There is free parking, food concessions, showers, restrooms, picnic tables playground and volleyball courts. You will also find a kayak / canoe launch nearby as well.

The North Jetty Beach also has a bait shop, and anglers can fish from the jetty or shoreline here. Dolphins frequent the inlet to the bay and waterways around the area, and even if you aren’t a boater you can enjoy watching the boats come in and out of the inlet. This is a great family beach that is located just a few minutes from downtown Venice.

6. Manasota Beach

We placed this beach at the bottom of this list only because it is the furthest from town. However, many would argue that Manasota really is the best beach in the area. It is one of the quietest, most peaceful beaches you will find in Venice. Early in 1963, Manasota consisted of a small beach, almost 450 feet of Gulf frontage with four concrete picnic shelters. Intracoastal Waterway construction spoil was pumped on the Manasota Beach’s bayside, expanding the park. The county purchased an additional beach in the ’70s, making it bigger than its initial size.

Manasota Beach is a long and reasonably wide section of beach with lovely sand and stunning waters. This beach is a popular place for locals since it’s less crowded than the beaches closer to downtown. It’s also a popular beach for shark tooth hunting as well!

Even though there are some private homes here with beach views and access, you will not find large condos or hotels here obstructing the views. Plus, this is still a public beach and you can walk for miles along the shoreline.

Near the main parking area, you will find amenities including boat ramps, grills, picnic areas, parking, restrooms, boardwalk, etc.

More Recommended Beaches Near Venice

While these are really the primary beaches that you will find in Venice and super close to town, there are a couple other beaches that we wanted to give a shout out too. These beaches are just a short drive from Venice and offer beauty and fun of their own!

Siesta Key – In Sarasota

Just around 15 miles north of Venice is the southern part of Sarasota. Just offshore is Siesta Key, and you can easily access it from the main highway and over the bridge from town. Siesta Key is actually one of the most famous beaches in the area because it’s been voted numerous times as the #1 beach in the USA!.

Depending on traffic, you can get to Siesta Key from Venice is only around 20-25 minutes or so. Once on Siesta Key, there are actually a few beaches to choose from. There is the main Siesta Key beach, as well as Turtle Beach and Crescent Beach.

Englewood Beach

Only a few miles south from Venice is the town of Englewood, Florida. This is another popular fishing and boating town, and if you turn west off the main highway 41 over the bridge you will arrive out on a barrier island which is where you can find Englewood Beach. Englewood Beach is a fantastic beach with beautifully soft sand and crystal-blue water.

Englewood Beach offers facilities such as parking (paid) as well as restrooms, picnic areas, etc. And there are also a number of beach shops and restaurants just across the road from the beach. In particular, we enjoy going to the Sand Bar Tiki & Grille for live music and hanging outside with a cocktail and grabbing some lunch.

Which Beach in Venice is Your Favorite?

While there are many things to do in Venice, hitting the beach is probably at the very top of most people’s lists. With so many iconic Florida beaches in and around Venice, it’s no wonder this part of southwest Florida tops the list for both beach vacations and even those who want to live the beach life in Florida year-round. We’ve visited every one of these beaches, and while they each vary in scenery, location, and what they have to offer, you really cannot go wrong with visiting any of them. With so much coastline, it’s tough to narrow down our favorite beach towns in Florida. We’ve been fortunate enough to visit so many over the years! Each town is a little different in its vibe and what it has to offer visitors. But after a lot of thought, this is our list of the 17 top beach towns in Florida that we absolutely love, whether we are there just for the day, a weekend getaway or on an extended vacation!

1. Islamorada, Florida Keys

Of course, one of our absolute favorite beach towns includes one from the Florida Keys! A village of six islands located just an hour and a half minutes south of Miami, Islamorada is a paradise to explore by land and by sea. It’s known as a top destination for fishing and there are actually guided tours you can go on if you wish to catch some fish. Or you can just order fresh seafood at any of its great restaurants.

All four islands of Islamorada are dotted with tranquil spots where you can relax under the sun’s golden rays. Visitors can enjoy a cocktail by the beach, go on a sunset cruise, or spend the day shopping at one of the many art galleries and boutiques. Be sure to stop by the Florida Keys Brewing Company for a fun afternoon out in their beer garden – which feels more like a relaxing beach! Certain days they have music and food available, making for an enjoyable afternoon.

Another must-visit hot spot in Islamorada is Robbies, an iconic waterfront restaurant where you can sit outside and admire some of the best views in the Keys. You can also stroll around and do some shopping at some of the unique stalls selling eclectic and local merchandise. Or you can book a kayak tour or even rent some jet skis. Lastly, the most famous thing to do at Robbie’s is the feed the tarpon out off the dock! It’s a memorable experience for sure!

2. Venice, Florida

This charming town just south of Sarasota is actually one of the first “master-planned” communities to be created. Visit historic downtown Venice to enjoy the classic Italian-styled architecture, since the town is modeled after Venice, Italy. Wandering downtown you can enjoy the palm tree-lined streets, local boutique shops and restaurants, many of which offer al fresco dining. What we enjoy most about Venice is that it’s super laid-back and doesn’t really feel like a tourist destination. Plus, there are just so many beaches here as well as great boating opportunities!

Venice Beach is just steps from downtown, but within just a few minutes you can be at many other beaches including Caspersen, Brohard, Manasota and Nokomis. Don’t miss visiting the North Jetty to watch the boats and catch a glimpse of dolphins or manatees. Or you can head out to the Venice Fishing Pier for spectacular sunset views and enjoy the famous Sharky’s on the Pier restaurant.

Venice is also known as the “shark tooth capital of the world” because of the fossilized teeth that you can find all over the beaches. And we must admit, spending the day on the beach with a sand sifter to pick through different shells and finding these old shark teeth is actually a pretty fun and relaxing activity!

3. Siesta Key, Sarasota

Voted the best beach in the USA, Siesta Key is an incredibly popular island / beach town in Florida for very good reason. Beach-lovers flock to Siesta Key for its miles of beaches with soft white sand and crystal clear blue waters. While this is a fairly large barrier island off the coast of Sarasota, the main area of Siesta Key Village is centrally situated on the island. This is where you’ll find the weekly farmer’s market as well as many local shops and restaurants. Definitely stop by Meany’s donuts for some warm and freshly made treats!

All across Siesta Key you will find various accommodations from resorts, B&Bs and many vacation rentals that are perfect for a family vacation or extended stay. You can regularly find activities out on Siesta Key’s beaches, including Zumba and dance classes as well as drum circles and sound baths! Don’t be shy about getting involved to join in on the fun too!

4. Key West

Located closer to Cuba than to Miami, Key West is the southernmost point in the United States. It’s a unique confluence of history, cultural diversity, climate, natural beauty, and architecture. Take a walk through the city to discover the homes of Ernest Hemingway, Tennessee Williams, Robert Frost, and Elizabeth Bishop– a few of the inspiring people who found solace and inspiration here.

Locals and visitors participate in sightseeing, fishing, watersports, scuba diving, golf, and shopping by day, then take part in the sunset celebration held each evening at Mallory Square. You can see the tightrope walkers and jugglers perform before the sun settles into the Gulf of Mexico.

Key West is a personal favorite for us, we never tire of visiting! There’s always so much to do in this funky town. There’s so much history and outdoor activities, as well as nightly entertainment and restaurants to enjoy. In fact, we had our destination wedding in Key West! It’s a spectacular town that’s perfect for a fun and lively weekend out or just a relaxing or romantic getaway.

5. Clearwater Beach

Nestled on Florida’s west coast near Tampa stands the lively Clearwater Beach with its white sand beaches that stretch for 2.5 miles. If you come here, pack your swimwear, sunglasses, and flip-flops, because a trip here is all about fun in the sun.

Visitors from all over the world flock to Clearwater for the crystal-clear (and warm) water. Main attractions include lots of waterfront activities, great beach bars, fresh and delicious seafood, and an exciting year-round calendar of events. As the day comes to an end, head straight to Pier 60 for the nightly sunset celebration.

6. Dunedin, Florida

Dubbed Edinburgh of the South because of its name that comes from the Scottish Gaelic Dùn Èideann (meaning Edinburgh), Dunedin is one of the state’s oldest towns. This charming city is located in Pinellas County and is said to offer some of the best dining in Tampa Bay.

The city boasts a lovely downtown with local purveyors and a variety of historical attractions. Its historic roots can be enjoyed through the cultural groups and events that take place throughout the year. Just off the coast of Dunedin are two must-see spots — Honeymoon Island and Caladesi Island and, both renowned for their untouched beauty.

Personally, we fell in love with Dunedin the first time we ever drove through it! In fact, we were on our way to Clearwater Beach and just passing through on an alternate route on the highway and the moment we entered the town I said “oh my gosh, what town is this? It’s adorable!”

So of course, we pulled right over and decided to wander around town to explore. There really are some fantastic restaurants here, including breweries, pubs, as well as a great marina / boardwalk right near the downtown area. There’s also Edgewater Park downtown and even a kayak launch to enjoy the bay. There are also a lot of events and festivals in Dunedin throughout the year!

7. Navarre Beach

A compact beach community east of Pensacola, Florida out on the barrier island, Navarre Beach prides itself as one of the most relaxing places in Florida. It is part of the famous “Emerald Coast” and is known for being uncrowded and unspoiled. The unhurried natural beauty of the town reflects in its powdery white beaches and clear blue water.

Here you’ll find solitude and simplicity. The town’s pristine beaches are named as one of the best in the state, and that’s what brings thousands of visitors here year after year. So take the time to relax under the sun and enjoy a picnic in the park. Bring your bike and peddle along the paths from one end of the beach area to another, and if you have time definitely take a drive just west of the Navarre Beach area through the Gulf Island National Seashore. This narrow patch of barrier island is where you will be surrounded by natural white sand dunes on both sides between the Gulf and the Santa Rosa Sound. It’s a stunning drive with many beautiful beaches to stop off and enjoy. 

8. Tarpon Springs, Florida

Situated between the Gulf of Mexico and Lake Tarpon, Tarpon Springs offers visitors a taste of Greece in all ways possible. The city has the highest percentage of Greek Americans, which makes it the ideal place to taste some staple dishes of the delicious traditional Greek cuisine.

Tarpon Springs is also known for its sponge diving industry, cultural diversity, museums, performing arts, shopping, and dining experiences. There’s also plenty of outdoor activities to partake in — boating, kayaking, fishing, and shell hunting are just some of the things you can occupy your time with.

Be sure to head down to the Sponge Docks area along the water for a stroll to enjoy all the unique shops and restaurants. You’ll find an abundance of natural sponges that are harvested from the sea, hence the name of the area. Also, if you have your dog with you be sure to stop by the Tarpon Springs Dog park which is just a few blocks from the Sponge Docks. It’s a lovely park where the dogs can plan and even cool off with some water features!

9. Destin and Fort Walton Beach

Located along the Florida Panhandle in the heart of the Emerald Coast, Destin and Fort Walton Beach are separated by a white beach on an undeveloped part of Okaloosa Island. Sand doesn’t get much whiter than it is in this area – a real treat for the eye, as anyone who’s been here can tell you.

Destin was named the “World’s Luckiest Fishing Village” by virtue of its waters that hold fish like mackerel, sailfish, grouper, cobia, and wahoo. The Destin Bridge crosses to Fort Walton Beach, an older beach community that houses family-friendly resorts, parks, museums, and aquariums.

Fort Walton Beach has a great vibe to it. It’s relaxed and a little funky with some cool shops and restaurants. It honestly looks like an enjoyable town to live as well as visit. On the other hand, Destin seems to be a bit more touristy with a lot more timeshares and hotels along the stretch of beach. Still, we find both towns to be absolutely enjoyable for a visit!

10. Pass-A-Grille (South of St. Petersburg)

The laid-back beach town of Pass-A-Grille is situated at the south end of St. Pete Beach in Pinellas County. Local legend states that its name comes from the French Passe Aux Grilleurs, meaning “the passageway of the grillers,” in honor of the fisherman who first settled here.

In 1989, most of the Pass-A-Grille became a U.S. Historic District, with over 90 interesting old houses, shops, and restaurants in the District. The grand centerpiece is the magnificent Don CeSar Hotel built in 1928. It’s one of the most beautiful of Florida’s historic hotels.

Pass-a-Grille is one of the smallest, yet most adorable little “beach towns” that we’ve seen. It’s literally just a small enclave just a few blocks in width on a barrier island with water surrounding it almost entirely. It’s a lovely place for a visit, or if you are lucky, rent one of the adorable beach cottages for a weekend for a truly relaxing experience!

11. Cocoa Beach, Florida

An hour’s drive east of Orlando on Florida’s famous Space Coast, Cocoa Beach is a quintessential beach town. This is really the closest beach to Orlando and one that I use to visit frequently when I lived in Orlando. Discover pristine shores, witness sea turtles, beautiful sunrises, and enjoy the breezy weather.

Cocoa Beach’s small and consistent waves are ideal for learning how to surf. The Cocoa Beach boardwalk is another top attraction, brimming with boutiques, shops, and restaurants. Visitors can also visit area attractions like the Kennedy Space Center and the numerous museums and historic sites.

12. Bonita Springs, Florida

Located in Lee County and part of the Cape Coral-Fort Myers, Bonita Springs is a welcoming beach community with plenty of things to do for the active traveler. Its warm, tropical climate makes it a year-round outdoor destination with options of boating, canoeing, kayaking, fishing, swimming, biking, and golfing.

Those that enjoy going on adventures can explore the Everglades Wonder Gardens, home to rescued reptiles and other exotic animals, as well as bizarre plant life. Thanks to its secluded shoreline and shallow waters, Bonita Springs is also a good place for pet owners. It even has an off-leash beach that’s rightly named Dog Beach Park over near Lover’s Key State Park (just south of Fort Myers Beach). 

What we love about Bonita Springs is that it’s a relaxed town that is super close to so many incredible beaches. You can quickly drive up to Fort Myers Beach or even over to Sanibel and Captiva Islands. Or just relax in and around town and out at the super chill beaches of Bonita Springs.

13. Captiva Island

Immediately north of Sanibel Island and just west of Fort Myers you’ll find Captiva Island. The heart of local life on the island is Captiva Village. Here you’ll find art galleries, a small library, a chapel, boutiques, restaurants, inns, and quaint homes.

This small community is all about the outdoors – biking, birding, sailing, and all sorts of water activities. There are also several small businesses that over a range of activities, including trips to Useppa Island and Cabbage Key. For those that are just looking to relax, having a drink while watching spectacular Gulf sunsets is all you really need.

Captiva feels like a whole different world far away from everything. It’s amazing to feel like you are on a far off, quiet tropical island yet it’s so close to the mainland. Captiva is a perfect place for a weekend getaway!

14. Bradenton Beach

Located at the southernmost point of Anna Maria Island off the Gulf Coast, Bradenton Beach is a small town with a big-city personality. The city offers the perfect backdrop to a family or romantic getaway. The beach is a big draw for visitors visiting this area, but there’s still plenty of other things to do here.

Bradenton Beach offers small art galleries, quaint little shops with handmade clothing, local ice cream parlors, casual dining, and more. If you want to explore more of the area, there are bikes, kayaks, and paddleboards you can rent. 

Bradenton Beach is another beach town that the moment we drove through just exploring, we had to pull over and get out to wander around. We found some really fun shops here as well as some great restaurants. If you have time, the Daiquiri Deck restaurant is located in the heart of the village area and up on the 3rd floor roof-top of a building — giving you some of the most incredible panoramic views of the ocean! Especially spectacular at sunset!

15. Lauderdale-by-the-Sea

For a small but picturesque beach to visit while in Greater Fort Lauderdale, choose Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. The beach is the heart of things to do and see in the town, which was named Florida’s Beach Diving Capital because the first reef of a three-tiered natural coral reef system is just 100 yards from the beach. The proximity ensures scuba divers and snorkelers can swim out to the reef straight from the shore.

16. Grayton Beach

One of South Walton’s original beach neighborhoods, Grayton Beach goes by the funky motto “Nice Dogs, Strange People.” It is popular for being a creative haven for musicians and artists of all kinds, chefs, and anyone who wants to escape the conventional.

The Grayton Beach State Park, which surrounds the neighborhood, provides an idyllic setting for sunbathing, swimming, and surf fishing. Part of what makes Grayton Beach unique is beach-launching, where you hop on a fishing charter boat launched directly from the beach.

17. Fernandina Beach

Fernandina Beach is found on Amelia Island at Florida’s northeast border and is renowned for great golf. The island has been a beloved beach destination for generations, and its upscale resorts and world-class spas paired with historic sites and lively festivals still keep visitors coming year after year.

One of the most popular things to do here is to attend the annual Isle of Eight Flags Shrimp Festival. The first edition was held in 1964 and it seems people love shrimp so, it became a tradition to indulge in seafood every year in May. If you come during this time, you can also see (and purchase) an array of art items, collectibles, antiques as well as live music. Plus, you wouldn’t want to miss out on the Miss Shrimp Festival pageant.

With so many amazing beach towns in Florida to explore, it will take you a while to visit all of them. Each of these towns have their own unique vibe and style to them. But what you will find at all of them is iconic Florida beaches and lovely weather! Every one of these beach towns are perfect for a short getaway or weeklong vacation. Or if you are lucky, maybe you even get to live in one of these towns year-round.
