A Brief History of Englewood, Florida
First Settlers
The town of Englewood was platted in the 1890s, but the first settlers came to the area in 1878. The first settlers were William and Mary Goff, followed by the Nichols brothers, who named the town after their native Englewood, Illinois.
Early Industry
Over the years, Englewood developed gradually, and its main industries were farming, fishing, and lumber.
Growth
The town started to grow rapidly in the 1960’s and 1970’s and the expansion of nearby Port Charlotte and other areas made the town a bit less isolated on the coast.

While Englewood is still more of a rural place and maintains its “old Florida” vibe, it is a popular beach destination for tourists and those who enjoy of living a relaxed beach life away from the busy coastal cities.

Beaches Near Englewood
One of the most beautiful Florida state parks is located in Englewood. The Stump Pass Beach State Park stretches along three islands within the city’s coastline and is known as one of the best fishing spots in Charlotte County. The Lemon Bay Park and Environmental Center spans 210 acres and is home to a beautiful mangrove forest along the city’s Gulf of Mexico coastline.
This is a place where you can enjoy 1.7 miles of Gulf shoreline, visit a butterfly garden, and enjoy lots of wetland boardwalks.
Englewood is not just about walks on the beach and hiking, as there are many other activities to enjoy in the city.
The Englewood farmers market takes place every Thursday morning between October and May and showcases the region’s producers and farmers who sell fresh baked goods and seasonal produce. Transportation in Englewood
Englewood is located on State Road 776 south of Venice. The city is easily accessible by both I-75 and U.S. 41. I-75 Exit 193. The Sarasota County Area Transit as well as the Charlotte County Transit provides local public bus service. There are several nearby airports that provide domestic and international flights.

Sarasota has multiple airports nearby to choose from.
Punta Gorda Airport – closest to Englewood (22.5 miles away) and is typically the most used for people to reach Florida towards Englewood.
Sarasota International Airport (SRQ) – located 32.4 miles south in Sarasota, this is a fairly small airport but is growing and has carriers such as Delta, Air Canada, American Airlines, United, Jet Blue.
Southwest Florida International Airport (RSW) – located 47.2 miles from Englewood. The Fort Myers airport is perfectly positioned to serve the greater Southwest Florida area, including Fort Myers, Cape Coral, Sanibel, Captiva, Greater Naples, Marco Island and the Everglades, Charlotte Harbor and the Gulf Islands as well as other points along Florida’s Gulf Coast.

Fawcett Memorial Hospital

Schools in Englewood
Englewood is mostly in Charlotte County but there is a small northern portion that is in Sarasota County. So different schools around town fall into different county school systems. The Sarasota school system is known as being one of the top school systems in Florida.
There is an agreement in place where residents who live in Charlotte County can go to Englewood Elementary (which is in Sarasota County) and those in Sarasota County can go to the middle and high school in Charlotte County.
