Motorworks Brewing (Bradenton)

As the first of many Bradenton breweries to officially open, Motorworks Brewery secured high favor amongst local beer enthusiasts just north of Sarasota. Its continued growth and popularity have only increased since, and it has won multiple awards.

Co-founded by Frank and Denise Tschida, Motorworks Brewing is housed in a historic 27,000 sq. ft. building dating back to 1923. Newly debuted in its own premises in 2023 in nearby Venice, 3 Bridges Brewing is amongst Sarasota’s brewery’s top contenders. Despite the new location, 3 Bridges is a venture that has previously operated within Off The Wagon brewpub and kitchen (one of the best gastropubs in Venice!).

Just off the U.S.-41 Bypass, on the Tamiami Trail, 3 Bridges Brewing has become a community hub where locals gather to savor the best of Venice’s craft beer scene in one of the favorite breweries in Sarasota County. Open 11 am to 10 pm daily, 3 Bridges invites families to come and join the fun, where the owners strive to give back to their community through good times and good beers! So far, they’ve succeeded in doing precisely that with a dedicated area for cornhole and a welcoming outdoor space.

What is PopStroke?

PopStroke is not typical “putt-putt” or mini-golf. This is a putting course. The facility is built on the concept of combining casual dining with golf to provide a fulfilling family- entertainment experience. In other words, this is golf that you can enjoy with the whole family. According to Greg Bartoli, the co-founder and CEO of PopStroke, the venue was designed with the aim of making golf accessible to all.

So, they did away with the pressures that come with playing a regular course and even the gimmicks of regular miniature golf and modern putting courses. Instead, what you get here is a putting experience that feels like the real deal, because it is. Also, because it is so much fun, it’s a wonderful way to introduce youngsters and kids to golf.

Is PopStroke Owned by Tiger Woods?

Built by Tiger Woods and his TGR Design Team, you can choose from 2 beautiful rolling courses – Tiger Red course, or Tiger Black.  With steep hills, hidden breaks, bunkers, and rough – but with synthetic turf. It’s just like real golf course, just miniature-sized.

PopStroke locations are popping up all across the country already! However, PopStroke Sarasota was the very first location to be built and to open to the public!

They have a variety of putters to choose from, but you are also allowed to bring your own! (for the more serious golfers, this is definitely a plus!).

PopStroke Sarasota Courses: Tiger Red & Tiger Black

Honestly, we found the PopStroke courses in Sarasota to be quite beautifully designed! The vibrant colors and steep rolling hills created a vivid contrast. Combine that with the tropical landscaping and it really is visually stunning. Both putting courses have their fair share of bunkers, fairways, roughs, and of course, synthetic turf to provide the feel of a regular golf course.

The Tiger Black: Of the two, the Tiger Black Course is easier to get through as it stretches across relatively flat ground. Moreover, the contours are softened, which makes putting easier while helping to keep the ball in. Also, the flat topography makes the Tiger Black a wheelchair-friendly course.

The Tiger Red: If you are looking for a challenge go for Tiger Red. As you may have guessed, the holes are placed uphill and downhill with roughs and bunkers in between. Plus, the slopes are steep and other contour elements and multiple tiers have been included with the specific aim to make it harder to get through this course. So, you are less likely to get a hole-in-one on the Tiger Red. However, the thrill of playing this course is what makes you savor the experience.

How Long Does it Take to Play the PopStroke Putting Courses in Sarasota?

Now, depending on your putting skill, it can take an hour or a bit longer to get through the 18 holes of the Tiger Black. Traversing the Tiger Red can take about an hour and a half even if you have good putting skills and about two hours if your putting needs some work.

The best part is that you can stop at any time for a quick bite or drink or just to cool off with a trip to the rooftop bar. Cold towels and misting stations do help with the heat even when it’s hot outside.

Is Popstroke good for kids?

In addition to the two courses, they also have entertainment options for their younger patrons who have yet to find their love for golf. There’s also an outdoor games area that offers Ping-Pong, Corn hole, and foosball. Plus, they have swings and slides in the playground which are just right for 4-5-year-olds. So while the actually putting course itself might not appeal to all kids, there are things for kids to do so that the whole family can enjoy their time together.

How much does it cost to play PopStroke Sarasota?

PopStroke tickets are good for ALL-DAY PLAY! So, basically, you just pay for the food and drinks and your day pass covers the rest. Prices range from $15-$28 and there are a variety of discounts for seniors, college students and other special days.

Are reservations required at PopStroke Sarasota?

Currently, the PopStroke location in Sarasota, Florida does NOT take reservations. It’s first-come-first-served.

The hours of operation are daily from 9 am until midnight. And keep in mind that after dark, the music pumps up a little louder and things get a bit more exciting.

You can play as many rounds as you want. Take a break, have something to eat, then play again. Maybe grab some ice cream and play some cornhole…then play again! And since the venue is co-owned by the legendary Tiger Woods, of course, you get to watch all PGA events on the big screen.

What Is the Legacy Trail?

The Legacy Trail Sarasota is one of Florida’s most wonderful stretches of paved trail running all the way from Venice to Sarasota. It connects communities and neighborhoods in Sarasota as well as connecting to towns south of Sarasota including Osprey, Nokomis and Venice. The trail passes through a variety of hot spots, nature preserves, and neighborhoods and even goes right through Oscar Scherer State Park.

Although some use it for travel purposes, most people enjoy the trail for exercise or just enjoying the outdoors. Exploring the Legacy Trail can be quite therapeutic due to many of the undeveloped areas of the trail that allow you to feel more in tune with nature. Sometimes it really doesn’t feel like you are in the middle of an urban area. The trail is a perfect way to spend a day or evening if you want to go on a long walk, ride your bike, or even take a jog on the trail. You can also bring your pet with you!

The History of the Legacy Trail

The Legacy Trail in Sarasota has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. The newly constructed Seaboard Air Line Railway was ready for use in November of 1911, with the first passenger coach riding across it on the 12th of that month. However, it would take another 16 years before the Venice Train Depot would open with a railroad that helped locals survive some of the most trying times, including the Great Depression.

The railroad would continue to be used over the next several decades, helping transport cadets of the Kentucky Military Institute to their Venice classes and patients to and from the office of Dr. Albee. Although regularly used to bring goods into the city, even Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus used this railroad for their traveling circus! Unfortunately, by January 1992, service on the railway was discontinued for good.

Despite sitting for quite some time, Sarasota County eventually purchased the Venice Train Depot in 2003, restoring it to ensure that locals and tourists alike would have access to a little piece of incredible history in the area. It has since become a trailhead for the Legacy Trail Sarasota, often considered a starting point for those who want to experience every inch of the trail. And while the initial path was roughly 12.5 miles long, it has since been extended by an additional 7.5 miles. Visitors can still expect to see some upcoming changes, with overpasses set to be developed on both Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road.

How Long Is the Legacy Trail and Where Does It Go?

The Legacy Trail runs from Venice to Sarasota and is nearly 20 miles long, but it wasn’t always that way! A recent extension finished in 2022 added an extra 7.5 miles, stretching the trail even further into the downtown section of Sarasota by Payne Park. If you take this trail, you can stop at many places throughout the journey, starting with Legacy Park. Once you’re on the way, you will pass other local hot spots, such as Nokomis Riverview Park, Shakett Creek, Oscar Scherer State Park, and the Osprey Junction Trailhead, ending in Downton Sarasota by Payne Park.

The Legacy Trail access points are dotted all the way along the route, and it is so long that it takes you through heavily forested areas before bringing you into the bustling city, where you can stop and grab a bite to eat at places like Five-O Donuts or Fresh Mozzarella Pizzeria. Both of these eateries are within walking distance from Payne Park.

Venice to Sarasota – Where does the Legacy Trail start? 

The southern portion of the trail takes you through the town of Venice. You can choose to start in Shamrock Park in the South Venice Neighborhood and take the Venetian Waterway trail that follows the Intracoastal and connects to popular areas of historic Venice Island. From there, you can go to the Venice Train Depot just off Venice Island and connect to the main Legacy Trail and head up north of Venice through Nokomis, Oscar Scherer State Park and on up to Sarasota. Whether you do the whole route from Venice to Sarasota, or just part of it, you are in for a great time because it is a fantastic trail.

North Port to Sarasota via New Extension!

In September 2022 the North Port Extension officially opened which connected the Legacy Trail to the town of North Port, which is east of Venice. Now trail users can enjoy a trip through the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve and other beautiful nature areas, connecting to other trails and going right into the North Port and Mineral Springs area.

Is There Parking Available for the Legacy Trail?

If you plan to drive to the Legacy Trail before heading off, you will want to know where to park your vehicle. The good news is that there are plenty of options throughout the trail, so no matter where you start your journey, you shouldn’t have difficulty finding a safe space to park your car. Some of the different places that provide public parking include:

• Oscar Scherer State Park
• Laurel Park
• McIntosh Road Parking
• Sarasota Springs Trailhead
• Payne Park Trailhead

Several of these spots, including the Sarasota Springs Trailhead and Payne Park Trailhead, provide parking with access to restrooms and fresh drinking water, helping you stay hydrated on your journey. Other trailheads worth visiting include Pompano, Osprey Junction, and Patriots Park, to name a few. These parking areas are typically free of charge.

Facilities You Will Find Along the Legacy Trail

If you plan to spend hours on the trail it’s best to be prepared. Exploring, walking, jogging with loved ones, or even biking the Legacy Trail will generally require that you have access to convenient facilities at some point. For example, you never know when you might have the urge to use the bathroom or the desire to stop and rest for a bit.

The good news is that many facilities throughout the Legacy Trail in Sarasota offer water, benches, bathrooms, and more. The best thing to do is make a list of all the trailheads you will encounter based on your starting and finishing points.

When passing places like Nokomis Riverview Park, you can stop and rest, grab some fresh water, and even use the bathroom. The scenic spot sets the tone for a moment of relaxation when you feel worn out and want to catch your breath. However, several other stops offer the same facilities, including Oscar Scherer Park, Culverhouse Nature Park Trailhead, and the Pompano Trailhead. Each location provides trail access, so you can stop, take a break, use the restroom, and then get back to exploring.

Does the Legacy Trail Have Road Crossings?

Most of the Legacy Trail is road-crossing free. The trail is mostly designed to avoid or go around major roads, or there are bridges or tunnels under and over roads. However, there are a few places where the trail does actually cross the road.

In those few cases of road-crossings, there are signs to let you know and signs and signals for the cars to stop on the road. There’s also a distinct crosswalk area that you should use when you cross the roadway. However, it’s important that you pay attention and proceed with caution through the few road-crossings that there are. Be sure to look both ways and never assume that cars will stop.

How Difficult is the Legacy Trail?

Like much of Florida, the Sarasota area is quite flat. So the Legacy Trail does not have any natural hills to climb and is known to be a very easy trail no matter if you are walking, jogging or biking. 

The only hills you may encounter are raised trail bridges that go up and over major roads. And many of these bridges offer the option for you to stay at ground level and just go around the bridge and cross the road. However, the raised bridge allows for a much safer road crossing and you don’t have to stop if you are traveling fast.

If you are biking the Legacy Trail and have trouble with the bridges on a bicycle, then you can always walk your bike to the top and then enjoy the breeze as you ride down.

What’s Allowed on the Trail?

Before you head out on your journey on the Legacy Trail, it helps to know what is and isn’t allowed. Some people love walking the trail, and while it’s an option, there are other ways to travel through it. If you don’t want to walk or jog, you can ride a traditional bicycle, e-bike, or roller skates as you navigate your way around. It’s a great way to exercise, explore a beautiful area, and create the best memories with your loved ones.

If you’re thinking about biking the Legacy Trail but aren’t sure about how to get your bike there, you can always check out the Legacy Trail Sarasota Bike Rentals. There’s plenty of options and some even offer tandems or family bikes!

Yes, e-Bikes are allowed on the Legacy Trail. But other motorized scooters are not.

Visitors can spend time on the trail as early as 6:00 AM and up until the sun sets for the evening. No one should move faster than a speed of 15 MPH, whether on a traditional bike, skates, or e-bike. In addition, you’re allowed to bring your four-legged friends with you, but make sure you put them on the appropriate leashes. Dogs aren’t allowed to roam freely on the trail and should be accompanied by their human companions at all times.

Yes, dogs are allowed! But keep them on a short leash and close to you at all times.

Helpful Tips to Enhance Your Enjoyment of the Legacy Trail

If you want to have the most enjoyable experience on the Legacy Trail from Venice to Sarasota, there are a few things to remember. Check out these helpful tips to remain respectful on the trail and have a good time:

• Keep to the right side of the trail because people coming from the opposite direction are usually on the left-hand side, and you don’t want to get in their way.
• Always let people know when you’re getting ready to pass them. Simply saying “passing” will suffice.
• Bring comfortable yet weather-appropriate clothing to ensure you feel your best and are prepared for the outdoor conditions, especially when you’re planning to stay on the trail from start to finish.
• Pack a reusable water bottle. Even if you drink all your water before the trail’s end, you can stop at one of the trailheads to refill the bottle.
• Keep hydrated! This is Florida and it can get incredibly hot and humid during certain times of the year.
• Be mindful of others on the trail. Try not to take up all the space and give people plenty of room for their own activities, whether walking, cycling, skating, or jogging.
• Never dispose of trash on the trail. Hold it in your bag with you until you get to a trailhead and can dispose of the waste properly.
• Don’t forget the sunscreen. You may spend hours on the trail, which puts you at risk of sunburn. Reapply as needed when stopping at trailheads to use the restroom and get more drinking water.
• Be careful at any of the road crossings. There are a few of them, and even though there are signs, crosswalks and even signals that stop traffic in some areas, please always look both ways and proceed with caution.

About John Ringling and the Ringling Circus

John Ringling, a self-made entrepreneur, found success as one of seven Ringling Brothers. As one of the brothers, he agreed to collaborate with the Barnum & Bailey Circus to bring something incredible to people across the country through the art of travel circuses. He played a significant role in helping turn the circus into what it has become today, something families look forward to visiting when they want to see fun and adventure live and in front of their faces.

Choosing to combine two circuses into one for a truly remarkable, one-of-a-kind experience for viewers, the Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey debuted their new circus at Madison Square Garden for spectators to watch and enjoy. Sarasota – Winter Home of the Ringling Circus

Nearly 100 years ago, John Ringling decided it was the perfect time to transport the circus, known as The Greatest Show on Earth, from its original winter home in Bridgeport, Connect, shifting it to the beautiful, warm area of Sarasota, Florida. What to See at the Ringling Museum

When visiting the Ringling Museum, you can expect to see and learn a lot. From the impressive gallery full of fantastic artwork to the tour of the Ca’d’Zan Mansion and so much more, you’ll spend hours gaining valuable new knowledge and discovering all the hidden secrets and exciting tidbits about the circus world.

Here are some of the exhibits you can enjoy, and our thoughts about them from our own visit!

Circus Museum at the Ringling

The Circus Museum at the Ringling is one of the best spots to visit during a trip! Honestly, I was a super interested in this at first. But after popping into the exhibit, I can say that this was one of the COOLEST exhibits! We loved it and found the whole collection absolutely fascinating!

The interactive museum has something for everyone, whether traveling alone, with other adults, or with the children. Have a fantastic time learning more about the history of the circus while trying your luck at walking on a wire or squeezing yourself into the bright-colored clown car. Get an inside look at some of the most stunning costumes worn by performers throughout the decades and even review the archives to learn more about past performances and how they’ve changed over the years.

There were so many fun things to explore and interact with at the circus museum. PLUS — they have seriously the coolest gigantic dioramas that show the massive scale of the production when the circus came to town. I knew it was a big deal back in the day, but this really put it into perspective. It was like building an entire town…and then picking it up to move it, and build it again somewhere else!

Do NOT miss the diorama room. You can walk all the way around and it actually takes quite a while. But it is really cool to see. 

Ca’d’Zan (House of John) – AKA “The Ringling Mansion”

Would you like to see what it was like living in luxury as a circus leader? If so, you’ll want to stop by the Ca’d’Zan, a place that John and Mable Ringling once called home. Despite their relatively humble beginnings in life, the two would eventually live a life of luxury. The mansion was first built in the 1920s and quickly became the coveted winter home for the couple, who spent most of their winters beating the cold weather by living in this beautiful mansion.

The Mediterranean-style mansion takes up roughly 36,000 square feet, with more than 50 rooms sprawled throughout the property, and is quite the sight to see. Get a feel for how the Ringling couple lived their lives with a tour of this spacious, stunning mansion with its incredible architecture and interior design.

John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art

Another fantastic sight to see during your trip to Sarasota is the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Long before his death, John Ringling became a collector of artwork who found inspiration and joy in such astonishing pieces crafted by artists across the country. Meeting Mable, someone as enthusiastic about art as him, was like a dream come true.

The couple would eventually spend time attending auctions and bidding on different pieces, including tapestry and paintings, amassing an impressively large collection of artwork to use around their home. Now, much of that artwork is displayed for the rest of the world to see at the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. If you’re an art enthusiast looking forward to seeing thought-provoking pieces that can leave you inspired, this is the museum to visit.

How Long Does It Take to Visit the Ringling Museum?

A trip to the Ringling Museum can take several hours, at minimum. It really depends on how much you want to explore.  You could just make a quick trip of it, but if you really want to soak in the circus museum, mansion and also the art museum, then I think you do need the better part of a day.

If anything, plan to spend 3-4 hours minimum, just to ensure you aren’t super rushed. Still, I think you could spend even more time if you prefer.

Will Kids Enjoy the Ringling Museum?

Many kids will enjoy certain aspects of visiting the Ringling Museum. In particular, the Circus Museum is a really fun area. There are lots of colorful costumes and also many interactive exhibits, including some videos too. While the Ringling Mansion and Art Museum may be of less interest to children.

When the kids get restless there are open grassy park-like areas in between the various exhibit buildings where the kiddos can work out some of their energy. The David F. Bolger Playspace is a playground area on the property with slides, swings, and fountains too.

Is There Food Available at the Ringling? Or Can I Bring a Picnic?

Coolers are allowed if you’d prefer to save money and pack a lunch (just not during special events). Because you can expect to be there for quite a while, consider packing some snacks for the kids.  The Dwarf Garden is a great place to set up a picnic and enjoy a break from exhibits.

But there are also multiple food options onsite around the property. You can visit Mable’s Coffee and Tea to grab a quick sip and a bite to eat or you can stop by The Ringling Grillroom, The Ringling Concessions, and The Wandering Chef Food Truck.

How Much Do Tickets Cost to Visit the Ringling & How Can You Buy Tickets?

Museum admission tickets cost $25 for adults, $23 for seniors at least 65 years old and up, $5 for children between the ages of 6 and 17, and are completely FREE for anyone five and under. Special discounts are available for military members, college students, and Florida state teachers. If you fall under one of these categories, you can enjoy access to the museum at a reduced price!

You can buy tickets directly on the Ringling website HERE, and we recommend you do because it makes it much easier and you can skip any line when you arrive.

Special Events & Free Museum Mondays!

There are many special events held at the Ringling throughout the year. Be sure to check their website for more information. Also, if you are looking to save some money you can visit the Ringling on Mondays when the Museum of Art and Bayfront Gardens are open to the public free of charge!

However, if you want to visit the Mansion or the Circus Museum, those still have regular admission fees even on Mondays.

Where Is the Ringling Museum in Sarasota?

The Ringling Museum is located in north Sarasota along the bayfront at 5401 Bay Shore Rd in Sarasota, FL. It’s actually nearby the Sarasota-Bradenton airport as well as several local attractions and hot spots, including Sapphire Shores Park, Stephens Point, the New College of Florida, and the Sarasota Jungle Gardens.

The museum is just a short drive north of downtown Sarasota, and a bit further from popular visitor hotspots like Siesta Key (which is south of downtown Sarasota).  Wherever you plan to stay, the Ringling is pretty convenient to get to from any part of town.

The Ringling Museum in Sarasota is a fantastic museum to visit here in Florida. Pros of Living in Sarasota

I must admit, we have a great list of positive aspects of living in Sarasota. After all, we moved here years ago for many of the reasons below and have loved every minute of it. Others might have their own list, but these are our pros for living in Sarasota!

1. Warm & Sunny Weather

As with many of us who move to Florida, we were seeking warmth and sunshine! And Sarasota does not disappoint when it comes to the weather. On average, Sarasota receives 251 sunny days. Yes, there is a rainy season here. But oftentimes it will be sunny before and after the rainstorm. If anything, sometimes the rain cools down the temperature a bit. And while summer can get a bit hot and humid, we’ll happily take a couple months of that while the rest of the year is absolutely wonderful!

Another consideration is that Sarasota is mostly below the frost line. The northern parts of Florida can still get pretty chilly during the winter and some areas can even get frost or snow! Frost and snow are a rarity in Sarasota – so you can be sure to enjoy a pleasant winter here except for maybe just a couple days of chill.

2. The Gulf of Mexico Beats the Atlantic

Some opinions may differ, but for us, the Gulf of Mexico wins out over the Atlantic coast any day. We love that the Gulf is warmer and also that it has overall fewer waves when compared to the Atlantic. That means our beaches are much calmer most of the time unless there is a storm. In fact, there are days when I go out on the beach here and it’s flat as a pancake! Almost like a lake.

If you are a surfer, then you may prefer the waves in the Atlantic. But we enjoy having the calmer seas here. Plus, the warm waters and wonderfully white powdery sand make us feel like we are on a tropical island year-round. Oh, and don’t forget those sunsets over the water every night!

3. Top Beaches in the Country

Speaking of beaches, Sarasota is home to one of the highest-rated beaches in the country for many years in a row. Siesta Key is known for its wide, white sand beach and is a popular destination for both tourists and locals. But even though Siesta gets a lot of fame, there are many other beaches in the area that we love as well. Including Lido Beach, which is really the closest beach to downtown Sarasota. But there are so many other great beaches in the Sarasota area too.

4. Cultural & Performing Arts

Another thing we really love about Sarasota is that it truly is a hub for culture and the performing arts. There is art all around town, great art museums, and more performance halls than we ever imagined! The Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall is where you can watch Broadway-style shows and concerts, but then there is also the Opera House as well as many other local and improv theaters too.

For being a fairly small city, Sarasota has big-city talent when it comes to the arts. From the Sarasota Ballet to the Orchestra & Symphony too.

5. One of the Best Places to Retire & Live in the US

Over and over, we continue to see Sarasota being listed as one of the top places to retire in the country. And while Florida regularly tops that list, it’s interesting to see that of all the places in Florida, Sarasota is often on top. But it’s not just retirees. Sarasota also attracts people of all ages, including families, for many of the same reasons. Just looking at this list – you can see why!

6. Relatively Safe City

When compared to other major cities, Sarasota is a relatively safe place. As with many cities, safety varies in different areas. According to US News, both Sarasota’s average property crime and violent crime rates are lower than the national average. Personally speaking, I can say that I feel very safe in Sarasota. Even walking around in the downtown areas. And even more so if you venture into some of the suburbs and especially to the southern parts of town or to the east towards Lakewood Ranch.

7. Great Schools & Great for Families

Another reason Sarasota is a great place to live is the school system here. The Sarasota School system is rated as one of the top in the state, and a number of individual schools are nationally ranked as being some of the best in the country. This includes a number of high schools as well as Pine View Charter School – which is regularly named as one of the top schools in the country for high-performing students.

Great schools and a safe area means that Sarasota is a great place to raise a family. Add to that all the perks of living near the beach and having so much outdoor fun and entertainment nearby (including Disney just a couple hours away) it’s no wonder families enjoy living in Sarasota.

8. Neighborhoods for Every Lifestyle

Sarasota has a diverse selection of neighborhoods to suit various tastes and budgets. From trendy neighborhoods such as Southside Village to luxurious resort-style communities out in Lakewood Ranch. Then there’s Gulf Gate which is only a few minutes from the famous Siesta Key and offers some really cool remodels of mid-century modern homes or you might prefer a great family neighborhood such as Arlington Park.

9. Year-Round Events & Festivals

With such great weather and a great arts community, it’s no wonder Sarasota is home to many events and festivals throughout the year. From the weekly farmers markets that take place every Saturday downtown to the annual International Chalk Festival. There are seafood festivals, sandcastle festivals, Jazz festivals, and even speed boat racing events out on the Bay!

And having such great weather year-round, you’ll find many locals and visitors enjoy various sports outside. From biking on the Legacy Trail, which stretches from Sarasota south to Venice, tennis and pickleball (which is huge down here), and you can also enjoy world-class golf on one of the 50+ golf courses in the area.

11. Natural Surroundings & Wildlife Watching

Sarasota is home to some truly beautiful nature and wildlife. The Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is a lovely place to relax and admire many plants and flowers that are native to the area and from elsewhere. Nearby town you’ll also find Myakka State Park and south of town is Oscar Scherer State Park – both of which offer wonderful opportunities to learn about the local ecosystems and get outside to experience Florida’s natural habitat.

Wildlife watching is also extremely popular in the area, especially along the miles of waterways. From sea creatures to the wide variety of birds, which are truly majestic to just sit and watch. You might even want to stop by the MOTE Marine Laboratory and Aquarium to learn more and see many of these creatures up close.

12. Affordability Compared to Other Large Cities

The cost of living in Florida varies quite a lot from city to city. And compared to many of the larger cities, the cost of living in Sarasota can be more affordable. Especially when you look at some of the real estate prices. Even though that has been going up, they are still lower than some of the other major cities in Florida and even major cities in other states. This is part of the reason that people have been flocking to the Sarasota area.

Sarasota is not a small town, it is definitely a city. However, it is a smaller-scale city than that of Miami, Tampa or even Orlando. So if you prefer to have some of the big city amenities and entertainment without the major big-city headaches, then Sarasota is a nice choice that gets you the best of both worlds.

Sarasota is home to multiple hospital systems that have won various awards over the years. But Sarasota Memorial Hospital is well-known as one of the largest and most respected hospital systems in the state. It’s also received numerous awards and has been recognized as a top hospital in the entire country as well.

15. Wide Array of Amazing Restaurants

Sarasota has a fantastic culinary scene, including many high-end restaurants and world-renowned chefs. While you can find a variety of dining options from inexpensive to expensive all over town, you’ll find some amazing options in downtown Sarasota as well as in St. Armands Circle and on the islands near the beaches. We also love that so many great restaurants here take advantage of the pleasant weather by offering al fresco dining options. Many areas in including downtown and St. Armands almost give off a European vibe with all the outside dining we see.

16. Close to Larger Cities (Tampa / St. Pete)

Another perk to living in Sarasota is that if we really need to go to a larger town for something, we are not very far from St. Petersburg or Tampa. Barely an hour away, traveling to those towns can feel like a whole different world. We have access to major league sports teams and international airports with a ton of flight options.

17. Luxury Amenities

For those of you who like the finer things in life, then Sarasota does not disappoint. There is a market here for luxury goods and services, so you can find anything from high-end shopping and dining, to amazing resorts and spas.

18. Live Where You Vacation!

Of course a major reason we enjoy being in Sarasota is that we live where other people vacation! So many dream of enjoying Sarasota’s pleasant climate, relaxed lifestyle and gorgeous beaches. And we get to enjoy it every single day. There are many evenings or weekends when we go and and it really does feel like we are taking a mini-vacation.

Cons of Living in Sarasota, Florida

Even though there are so many amazing things about living in Sarasota, no place is perfect. There are some negatives to living in Sarasota that you should definitely be aware of. Some of these things might be deal-breakers for you, or maybe not. Still, we feel it’s important to look at both the good and the bad if you are thinking of moving to Sarasota.

1. Lots of Vacationers!

As with much of Florida, there are a lot of vacationers here in Sarasota. However, you’ll see much of this concentrated out on Siesta Key and other beach areas. Tourists can bring some frustrations to locals. Part of the frustration can be when it comes to finding rentals or homes to buy due to vacation rentals. This can drive up prices, especially during certain times of the year, and it can be a challenge. Because of this, the city and county have restrictions in place for vacation rentals.

2. Snowbird Season Can Change the Town

Slightly different than just vacationers are the “snowbirds.” Snowbirds are people (usually older and retired) who come to Florida to live for the winter months only so they can escape the cold.  Then when the weather gets warmer they return back to their home – usually up in the north. The thing with snowbirds is that there are quite a lot of them, and it can change the dynamic in town. It also means that peak season here in Sarasota and the nearby area is actually in the winter! That’s when prices are high, but it’s also when a lot more of the festivals and events are held.

The good thing about Sarasota is that it is a larger town and can absorb this better than, for example, Venice to the south (where we live). Smaller towns seem to have a bigger change during snowbird season than Sarasota does.

3. Massive Growth

The downside of so many people moving to Sarasota is that this massive growth is straining local resources and infrastructure. Building cannot keep up with demand and locals are starting to feel the growing pains more and more across the whole area, even beyond Sarasota.

4. Traffic is Getting Worse

As a result of all this growth, traffic is definitely getting worse as well. Combine that with snowbird season and it can definitely be a pain to get around town on certain days and certain times.

5. The Beaches Are Located on Barrier Islands

In Sarasota, you won’t find beaches on the mainland near town. All of the beaches are located out on the barrier islands, such as Siesta Key or Lido Key. This means that if you want to go to the beach you have to cross one of the bridges to get out there. And lots of cars going over bridges leads to bottlenecks that can really put a damper on your beach day. You definitely need to check the traffic and time your beach visit right so you don’t sit in traffic on the bridges forever.

Also, these island beaches are a pretty good distance from the Interstate and popular suburbs such as Lakewood Ranch. If you live out in the LWR area it could easily take you 30-45 minutes to get to the beach…on a good day.

No Dogs on Sarasota Beaches!

You should also know that if you have a dog and want to bring them to the beach, you cannot bring them to any of the Siesta Key or Lido Key public beaches. However, you can drive south to Venice and take them to the Brohard Dog Beach! It’s wonderful, we love it!

6. Real Estate is Getting More Expensive, Including Rentals

As with most of the country, there is a housing shortage in Sarasota as well – especially for starter homes. And due to the fact that Sarasota is becoming so popular and so many people are moving here, that is putting even more pressure on the real estate market. This is driving the prices of real estate upwards as well as increasing rental prices too.

7. Summers Can Be Brutally Hot & Humid

Florida is a tropical environment. And that means that summers are not only hot, but the humidity can make it feel downright oppressive! If you have never experienced humidity before, then this could be a real shock to your system (and hair!). Luckily, it doesn’t last all year and there is a bit of a breeze that comes off of the water compared to other cities that are more inland.

8. SRQ Airport is Smaller

If you are a frequent traveler, then you may find that Sarasota’s airport is small compared to others. It is an international airport and has a number of major airlines, but it doesn’t have the options that you’ll find in Tampa or St. Pete. So you may need to drive to another airport for more flight options and prices. There’s also the Fort Myers airport too — even though it’s also small, it gives you another option to search depending on where you are going.

9. Hurricanes Can Occur

Oh yeah, we can’t forget the hurricanes! It’s Florida, so you have to be aware that hurricanes are always a possibility here, and they can bring devastation on the coast. You might hear a lot of locals in Sarasota talk about an old Native American story about being “blessed” from hurricanes, and even some scientific reasoning to claim that Sarasota is safe from major storms. Sure, I’d love to believe that too. But you should still be prepared because it’s always a risk here.

10. Nightlife is Lacking for Younger Crowds

Another thing to consider is that Sarasota is a smaller town, and it’s extremely popular for older populations. This means that younger people in their 20’s or even 30’s might find the nightlife here in Sarasota to be lacking. There are not a lot of nightclubs or bar streets like you will find in Miami, Tampa or even Orlando. So if you are young and love going out frequently to these types of places, then you may be disappointed in Sarasota. We’ve been there, done that…just raising families or enjoying our Golden Years with a cocktail and a sunset!

What is Polo?

Polo is a sport that has been around for centuries and originated in Persia, in fact, it’s considered one of the oldest sports in the world (around 2,500 years old). It’s now enjoyed by people all across the globe. The game is played on horseback with two teams of four players each. The objective is to score goals by hitting a ball with a mallet through a goalpost.

Polo is a very physical and technical sport that requires a lot of skill, speed, and agility. But if climbing up on a horse to play is not your cup of tea, then don’t worry. You don’t have to be able to play polo to enjoy it. It’s definitely an exciting sport just to watch in person!

A Brief History of the Sport of Polo

The first recorded game of polo took place in 600 BC. The sport quickly spread to other parts of the world, and by the 1800s it had become very popular in England. In fact, Queen Elizabeth II is a big fan and has been playing since she was a child.

Today, polo is enjoyed by people all over the world. There are professional leagues in countries such as Argentina, Australia, India, and the United States. In Florida, one of the top places to watch (or play) polo is the Lakewood Ranch Polo Club in Sarasota.

Polo – Basic Rules of the Game

Before we dive into attending a polo match at the Sarasota Polo Club, first let’s explain just a bit about the rules of the game.

• Polo is played on a 10-acre grassy field
• The field is 300 yards long by 160 yards wide — which is about the size of 10 football fields!
• There are four players on each team
• The game is played on horseback
• The ball is hit with a mallet
• The object is to score goals by hitting the ball through a goalpost
• There are goalposts at each end of the field, which are 8 yards wide
• Teams score points by hitting the ball through the goalpost
• Teams change direction after each goal
• The game is divided into six periods called “chukkers” and each is 7 and a half minutes long
• Only penalties or injuries stop the play clock (there are no timeouts or substitutions allowed)
• Whichever team scores the most points by the end of the match wins

About the Sarasota Polo Club in Lakewood Ranch Florida

If you are in Florida, then the Sarasota Polo Club is a great place to watch (or learn how to play) the game of polo. The club is located in Lakewood Ranch, Florida and was founded in 1991. It has two regulation size fields and can accommodate up to 500 spectators. There is also a clubhouse where you can enjoy refreshments while watching the game.

The club dates back decades, but even before that, polo was played in the area around Sarasota by the cowboys and ranchers who used to challenge each other on horseback and the losing team buying drinks for the winners! 

The club holds polo matches during the season that are open to the public, as well as a number of fun themed matches too. For example, you could attend a match on Wild West Day, Kids Days, Holiday matches, Disco Party Days, and in the Spring they also have “sunset” polo happy hour matches!

They also have private event facilities that can be rented, and they also hold a number of public events and festivals throughout the year. Lastly, the club also has a school for those who want to learn how to play polo.

How to Attend a Polo Match in Lakewood Ranch, Florida

You don’t have to be a member of the club to watch a polo match. During the regular season, there are many public matches where everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the game! You can visit their website or Facebook page for more information on upcoming dates.

You do need to purchase tickets, either in advance online via their website or you can also buy tickets at the gate. 

Schedule: When are Polo Matches in Lakewood Ranch?

The club hosts several matches throughout the year, but mostly during the polo season from December through April. Most of the public matches are held on Sundays, but later in the Spring they also have Sunset Happy Hour polo matches during other days of the week.

Polo Seating & Ticket Options

There are many types of tickets available for purchase. There is reserved in a variety of areas as well as general admission at different price points. One of the more popular ticket seating options are the tailgating spots! These are a lot of fun and can accommodate larger groups and have a big space to set up all your food, drink, and chairs under tents.

If you prefer to buy just a general admission ticket, this allows you to bring your own chairs and coolers so you can set up wherever you want on the grass in the spectator area with your own picnic. Or you can sit on the general admission bleachers they have available (for those who didn’t bring chairs). The general admission area is large and grassy toward the end of the field.

If you want to have a reserved area or a tailgating spot, be sure to buy your tickets in advance! They do sell out, and if you show up the day of the event then they might only have general admission spots left.

What to Bring to a Polo Match – An Outdoor Picnic & Party!

When attending any polo match, there are a few things you’ll want to bring with you: sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, and water. The sun is intense in Florida, so it’s important to protect yourself from harmful UV rays.

However, at the Sarasota Polo Club in particular the venue is set up so you can really enjoy yourself in more of a “tailgate party” kind of way. While you can reserve chairs, most people bring their own folding or camping chairs. They will also bring cooler filled with food and drink. Some will also bring grills to cook food and turn it into a full-day event.

Bring Some Games Too!

The gates open to spectators hours before the match begins. So prior to the start, people will be hanging out for hours eating and drinking and playing games. You’ll find people playing cornhole, tossing balls around and much more. We even saw kids running around and flying kites on the field before the match begun!

Attending a polo match in Sarasota really is a family event and fun for everyone on a beautiful day.

Spectator Attire: What to Wear to a Polo Match?

Polo matches are typically very formal events. Men should wear jackets and ties, while women should dress in skirts or dresses. However, if you’re not comfortable dressing up that much, there is no need to worry – many people attend polo matches in more casual attire.

Just be sure to avoid shorts and tank tops, as they’re not appropriate for this type of event.

Is There Food available at the Lakewood Ranch Polo Matches?

Yes, the Sarasota Polo Club has a concession stand where you can purchase food and drinks. There is also usually a barbecue grill set up near the concessions stand, so you can enjoy a delicious meal while watching the game. However, as mentioned many people choose to bring their own food and drink and turn the day into more of a picnic event.

Can I Bring My Dog to a Match at the Lakewood Ranch Polo Club?

Yes! Well-behaved dogs are allowed at the public matches at the Sarasota Polo Club in Lakewood Ranch. We actually brought our dog with us during our visit, and she really seemed to enjoy the experience too! She loves meeting other people (and dogs) and she was truly fascinated by the horses running up and down the field.

Just be very careful to watch your pet and keep them secure!

When we visited, there was one dog in particular that kept getting loose from his family. At one point, he ran out onto the field while they were playing and they had to blow an emergency whistle and stop the entire event while the owner ran out there to grab their dog.

Don’t be that person. Plus, it’s super dangerous!

What to Expect at a Polo Match in Lakewood Ranch

When attending a polo match, you can expect to see some of the best players in the world competing. The games are fast-paced and exciting, and there is always plenty of action on the field. You can also expect to see some very impressive horsemanship – these horses are truly amazing athletes!

For most matches that are held on Sundays during the season, the doors will open at 10 am to spectators. That means you can come into the venue and set up your spot and have a few hours to hang out! That’s why it’s a fun option for those who enjoy a “tailgate party” because you have plenty of time to enjoy yourself before the match starts.

Before the match you can play some games, eat and drink, and walk around. Kids especially enjoy running around on the field and playing on the grass.

At some point, the horses and players will come out and begin to practice. So be sure to watch your step if you go onto the field after this time!

Half-time and Stomping Divots!

There is a halftime break after the 3rd chukker. And YES – this is when all the spectators are invited to come out onto the field and “stomp the divots.” This basically means that you help put the divot chunks of grass that get torn up by the horses back into the holes in the grass to help maintain the field. This is actually a fun tradition that dates way back in the sport.

However, be careful where you walk because during halftime there is bound to be some “steaming divots” (horse droppings) that you do not want to step in!

Horses and Polo

Horses are an important part of the game of polo. Even though they are often called “ponies” they really are small horses. They provide speed and agility, and players must be very skilled in riding them. Horses used in polo are typically thoroughbreds often with race track experience and are some of the most athletic. They’re well-trained and able to handle the physical demands of the sport.

Players MUST change horses after each chukker, due to the physical demands on the horse during the period! So every team needs to bring at least 24 horses with them to a polo match. 

Who Can Play Polo?

Polo is a physically demanding sport, so not everyone can play. You need to be in good shape and have excellent horseback riding skills.

We’re starting out our list with the most important meal of the day: breakfast (or brunch, if you’re not such an early riser). The following breakfast and brunch spots are perfect for grabbing a classic American breakfast or enjoying a slow weekend brunch. 

First Watch

Our first Sarasota breakfast joint is First Watch, which is located right downtown. However, the restaurant has various additional locations in the greater Sarasota area. Located right on bustling Main Street, First Watch “specializes in both traditional and innovative creations all freshly prepared to order”. 

In fact, this restaurant has been granted the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Readers’ Choice award for “Best Breakfast in Manatee and Sarasota”. While you are certainly getting quality at First Watch, you will also appreciate quantity. Portion sizes are generous, so come with an appetite or be prepared to share. 

Some of their specialties include lemon ricotta pancakes, eggs benedict, and the classic omelet. The restaurant often offers seasonal specialties as well, like their pumpkin pancake breakfast in the fall. Opening hours are 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day of the week. 

Fresh Start Cafe

Located in Laurel Park, Fresh Start Cafe is another great place to get your breakfast and brunch fix. The restaurant offers a quaint indoor cafe setting as well as outdoor seating options. The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m every day except Wednesday.

Here you can enjoy classics, like an eggs/bacon/pancake breakfast or french toast, or order some more unique dishes. Try a breakfast burrito, bagel & lox, or shakshuka (Israeli poached eggs in tomato sauce). Fresh Start Cafe also has a wide selection of frittatas, or you have the option to create your own. 

Millie’s

A Sarasota staple for over three decades, Millie’s offers breakfast and brunch classics. It’s one of those places that you know you can’t go wrong. Located just a twenty-minute drive from downtown Sarasota, Millie’s is your traditional American comfort food joint with a charming dining setting. 

Some of Millie’s staples include eggs florentine and biscuits and gravy. If you prefer your breakfast on the sweeter side, try the German apple pancake. Millie’s is open daily from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. 

Toasted Mango Cafe

You can visit the Toasted Mango Cafe at two Sarasota locations: right downtown or on beautiful Siesta Key. This unassuming breakfast joint is open from 7 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. every day of the week. 

Their extensive breakfast menu is certain to have something for everyone, with options including eggs benedict, omelets, corned beef hash, waffles, french toast, pancakes, breakfast wraps, and more. If you can’t make it out until later in the day, the Toasted Mango Cafe also has a great selection of lunch options, including wraps, sandwiches, and salads.

Lunch

If you’re looking for a place to grab a casual lunch, look no further than these Sarasota recommendations. And forget about your average soup and salad combo. Sarasota has plenty of unique and international lunch cuisine to choose from. 

Bitia’s Taqueria 

Bitia’s Taqueria is your Sarasota spot to enjoy a quick and casual lunch with a twist. Located just three miles from downtown Sarasota, this Salvadorian restaurant specializes in one of the country’s most emblematic dishes: papusas. Papusas, similar to a Venezuelan or Colombian arepa, are cornmeal flatbreads stuffed with a variety of fillings. 

Try a papusa de chicarron y queso (pork and cheese papusa), or one of the restaurant’s other regional specialties. Bitia’s tacos, quesadillas, tamales, and burritos are all worth trying. The restaurant is open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day except Mondays. 

Lila

Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about our vegetarian readers. Located right on Main Street, you’ll find plant-based Sarasota eatery Lila, which has a classy indoor dining room and outdoor seating options as well. Here you can enjoy classic American dishes made with organic ingredients, including plenty of vegan and gluten-free options. 

Lila’s menu includes plenty of salads and sandwiches (like the mushroom burger or the tofu Rueben). But don’t worry, meat-eaters have their own options at Lila, like the grass-fed bison burger or Faroe Island salmon cakes. The restaurant opens for lunch from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 10:30 a.m to 4 p.m. on Saturday.

Perhaps the best place to sit down for a relaxing lunch in Sarasota is Made. Their lovely outdoor patio, extensive lunch menu, and delicious dishes are sure to please. Plus, Made is conveniently located in downtown Sarasota, right off of Main Street. 

There is something on the menu for everyone at Made, like mac-and-cheese, salads, burgers, and more. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the chicken & french toast or BLFTA (bacon, lettuce, fried green tomatoes, and avocado). Pho Cali

If you’re looking for a fancy dining experience, perhaps Pho Cali isn’t for you. But if you’re looking for consistently delicious and authentic food, then you’ve come to the right place. Also located in downtown Sarasota, you can dine in or carry out at this traditional Vietnamese locale. 

Not surprisingly, Pho Cali’s specialty is pho, which is a Vietnamese soup made with rice noodles and plenty of additional ingredients. You can order yours with beef or chicken broth, and additional ingredient options include brisket, chicken, and mixed vegetables. The restaurant is open for lunch from 11 to 3:30, Monday through Saturday.

Happy Hour

Hoping to grab some drinks with coworkers or enjoy a cocktail after a long day on the beach? Well, we have the perfect Sarasota happy hour spots for you. 

Boca Sarasota

Monday through Friday from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. you can enjoy happy hour at Boca Sarasota. This industrial-chic downtown restaurant has the perfect vibes for relaxing with a cocktail and some appetizers. 

Aside from their impressive wine list, you can explore Boca’s house cocktails, like the Blue Lagoon, Seasonal Spritz, or Watermelon Collins. There are also plenty of starters to choose from, including zucchini fries and fried green tomatoes. Plus, you’ll love the restaurant’s outdoor patio seating area.  

State Street Eating House + Cocktails

State Street Eating House + Cocktails is the perfect location for cocktail connoisseurs. If you’re just looking to grab a drink, head to the Lounge, where you can enjoy happy hour specials from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. daily. 

The menu includes almost twenty custom cocktails, as well as four “high roller” cocktails ($50+). Some of State Street’s most intriguing cocktails include “Fizzy Endings” (empress gin, egg white, cream, lavender, citrus, and soda) and “Tea Slice” (whiskey, hibiscus tea, lemon, and alchermes liqueur). 

Shakespeare’s

If you’re more of a beer drinker than a cocktail connoisseur, look no further than Shakespeare’s English Pub. Self-proclaimed to be “Sarasota’s premier craft beer restaurant”, Shakespeare’s never disappoints. You can expect to see around 20 beers on tap at any given point, as well as more than a dozen types of bottled beer, both domestic and international. 

While you’re grabbing a brew, enjoy some of Shakespeare’s irresistible appetizers, like the spicy stuffed mushrooms, popcorn shrimp, or loaded fries. You’ll find Shakespeare’s less than a ten-minute drive from downtown Sarasota. 

Siegfried’s

Now that we’ve seen Sarasota’s English pub, let’s head to a German beer garden: Siegfried’s. Open from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. from Wednesday through Sunday, the beer garden is the perfect setting for grabbing a casual drink with some friends. Here you can enjoy German and domestic beers, both on draft and bottled, as well as unique German wines. 

Perhaps one of the best parts of Siegfried’s (aside from the quaint garden area and incredible beer) is their selection of authentic German eats. Out in the beer garden, you can order a German pretzel, German pepper sausage, or imported meats and cheeses. Patrons with a sweet tooth will love the homemade cakes and traditional applestrudel.

Mélange

Another Main Street staple, Mélange is the perfect place to go if you’re looking to impress a first date. Indigenous

Located in a charming yet classy repurposed home, Indigenous is dedicated to sustainability and “creating a better food system”. That’s why you’ll find such a seasonal menu at the restaurant, which changes on a regular basis. The restaurant’s farm-to-table philosophy ensures that you’re getting only the freshest (and most delicious) ingredients. 

However, you’ll always be likely to find fresh seafood on the menu, as well as plenty of other entrees. Don’t pass up on dessert: try the decadent Cuban expresso ice cream or an irresistible lemon bar. Indigenous is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5:30 pm.m to 8:30 p.m.

Ophelia’s on the Bay

If you’re in the mood for a romantic waterfront dining experience, look no further than Ophelia’s on the Bay. This restaurant has been a Sarasota classic for over three decades, and for good reason. While there are meat options on the menu, it goes without saying that Ophelia’s on the Bay is the perfect place to bring a seafood lover. 

Yellowtail snapper, crab cakes, and sea scallops are just a few of the menu’s many delicious seafood options. Ophelia’s on the Bay has been rated “Best Waterfront Restaurant” and “Most Romantic Restaurant” by the Sarasota Herald-Tribune Reader’s Choice Awards, making it the perfect place to treat your special someone. The restaurant is open for dinner nightly from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. 

Sage

If you’re celebrating an anniversary or special occasion, Sage is a great place to splurge. This sophisticated restaurant (which also has a spectacular rooftop bar), offers unique creations with seasonal ingredients and an international touch. The restaurant is open Tuesday through Saturday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

Vegetarians, meat-eaters, and seafood lovers alike have their fair share of delicious options at Sage. Interestingly enough, the majority of dishes are also gluten-free. The menu is seasonal, but you can expect to find creative dishes like smoked scallops with green garbanzo hummus, Thai bouillabaisse, or grilled and roasted quail.

Family Meal

Eleni’s Pizza Works

Just a 15-minute drive north from downtown Sarasota you’ll find Eleni’s Pizza Works. This family-friendly eatery offers not only great pizza but also incredible stromboli, as well as delicious subs and wraps. If you’re looking for healthier options, the restaurant also offers a number of salad options. 

And of course, you can’t go wrong with one of the restaurant’s signature pies. Creations like the Happy Greek pizza, the Shrimp Scampi pizza, and Eleni’s Spinachine pizza are just a few of the unique pizza options offered at Eleni’s Pizza Works. You can head here for lunch or dinner, and opening hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday and from noon to 8 p.m. on Sunday. 

Michael’s on East

Located just south of downtown Sarasota is Michael’s on East, a Sarasota restaurant that has been offering quality meals for over thirty years. This spot is the ideal place to celebrate a family celebration, be it a graduation, a birthday, or whatever else the occasion. Michael’s on East is only open for dinner, from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Thursday and 5 p.m. to 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday. 

This locale, while definitely on the classier side, is sure to have something for everyone in the family, as the restaurant has quite an extensive menu. Entrees range from seafood (snapper, seabass, and swordfish) to pasta dishes and steaks. More adventurous meat options include duck, pork chops, veal chops, and lamb. 

Old Salty Dog

The Old Salty Dog actually has three locations: one on Siesta Key, one in Venice, and one conveniently located right outside of downtown Sarasota, in City Island. This is the perfect spot for a casual meal, be it lunch or dinner, with the family. The Old Salty Dog has numerous sandwich and entree options, but what they’re really known for is, you guessed it, their hot dogs. 

You can’t leave the Old Salty Dog without trying one of their signature dogs, like the famous “Salty Dog”, which is dipped in batter and deep-fried. While perhaps not the best location for the health-conscious, the Old Salty Dog is worth the cheat day. The City Island location is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. Friday to Sunday. 

Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar

We couldn’t talk about good family restaurants in Sarasota without mentioning Phillippi Creek Oyster Bar. But don’t let the oysters scare you (or your kids) away. Phillippi Creek has an extensive menu, which seafood lovers will especially enjoy. 

While the restaurant is known for its oysters, you can’t go wrong with Phillippi Creek fried and baked seafood platters either. And be sure to order a round of hush puppies for the table. Phillippi Creek is open Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. and Friday through Sunday from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m.

About the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens

The Selby Gardens is the third oldest botanical garden in Florida. It started as a family endeavor for Mrs. Marie A. Selby, as she absolutely loved nature. The Botanical Gardens officially came to be two years after her death in 1975, and has grown over the years to become one of the largest subtropical conservatories in the world at 15 acres in size and with more than thousands of plants both indoors and outdoors around the campus. 

In fact, the Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota is home to the best scientifically-documented collection of orchids and bromeliads in the entire world!

Who Was Marie Selby?

Marie Selby and her husband moved to Sarasota in the 1920’s. Her husband came from family wealth as a part of the Selby Oil and Gas Company. However, the two of them were quite modest and built a home near downtown on 5 acres along the Bay. Even though Marie was a wealthy woman for the time, she enjoyed the more quiet life and was known to dress and act much more down-to-Earth. She had an adventurous spirit, as she and her husband would travel the country camping, hunting, and going on various explorations.

Marie had a love of plants and flowers, and enjoyed gardening and building up the grounds around her Sarasota bayfront home. She was the founder of local gardening organizations and supported charities such as The American Red Cross, Sarasota Memorial Hospital, and the Florida State Library Association.

During her life in Sarasota, she built up her property with such beautiful gardens. Her wish upon her death was to donate her home and land, including the gardens, to the city of Sarasota to be turned into a botanical garden that everyone in the community could enjoy.

Where is the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in Sarasota?

The main campus for the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens is located barely south of downtown Sarasota with fantastic views of the Bay. Visitors are able to enjoy a fun and relaxing atmosphere in this outdoor oasis, as well as multiple indoor exhibits as well. There is also a second Selby Botanical Gardens location just a few miles south of Sarasota in Osprey, Florida at the Old Spanish Point historical area.

Exhibits at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens (Downtown Sarasota Location)

There are many indoor and outdoor exhibits to be enjoyed at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens in downtown Sarasota. Below are just a few of the main highlights that people love to come here to enjoy.

1. The Rainforest

Here you will an indoor tropical conservatory where you can enjoy many varieties of tropical plants and flowers surrounding you, even hanging from the ceiling! This is a wonderfully relaxing area to stroll or sit and enjoy the amazing and unique flowers, including many varieties of orchids!

In the outdoor areas you can also enjoy a Bonsai exhibit, Cycad display, and Fern Garden. You can also wander through the towering Bamboo Garden, gazing up as they sway in the wind, and enjoying the amazing Banyan Grove with some jaw-dropping Banyan trees. You can also enjoy the popular Koi Pond! Purchase some food to feed the Koi fish, and there are even some hidden areas where you can sit, listening to the waterfalls and admiring the fish and views around you. Truly a lovely spot to relax!

There is also a wonderful Children’s Garden with fun play areas and paths that take you up across suspension bridges and to cool “treehouse” looking sort of buildings. The kids will love exploring the caves, looking out over top of the waterfalls, and walking under towering Banyan Trees.

2. Selby House

The Selby House is actually the original home of Marie and her husband. Now it has been turned into a cafe, and you can enjoy learning some of the history of the home and Marie, as well as a lovely memorial. There’s also a “kid’s corner” area for activities.

3. Desert

A surprisingly interesting area is the Desert exhibit, where you can see a succulent garden and other fascinating plants and flowers. You can walk around and, for a moment, forget you are in tropical Florida! It’s amazing how pretty cactus and blooming desert flowers can be.

4. Great Lawn

The great lawn is just a beautiful, wide and long strip of green grass inviting you to walk, lay or play on it. There is a charming gazebo here where you can sit and look out over the area, as well as a colorful wedding pavilion. Weddings are no doubt a beautiful occasion here at the Botanical Gardens with such a variety of natural backdrops and space for guests to relax and enjoy the natural decor all around you!

5. Mangroves

Mangroves are quite important to the ecosystem here in Florida. And tucked along the bay you will find a whole mangrove exhibit where you can learn about the importance of them and how they function. There’s also a great boardwalk up and around the mangroves and out into the bay where you can observe fish, birds, and the skyline around you.

6. Palms

If you are visiting Florida, then you might be interested to learn more about palm trees. At the palm exhibit you can learn about tropical and coastal palms, including some of the different types you will find in Florida.

7. Native Florida

This is a really cool area where you can learn more about the unique natural setting of Florida. There is a tidal lagoon where you often see different birds hanging out, as well as walking through a hardwood hammock — a very specific type of environment that you will find all across Florida.

8. Display Gardens

Other display gardens that you can enjoy here include a bromeliad garden (really cool plants that we have in our backyard here in Florida), a green roof, a fragrance garden, and there is also a butterfly garden too. Don’t forget to peek inside the butterfly display wooden structure where you can spot caterpillars, cocoons, and some newly emerging butterflies coming out of them!

Lastly, there’s also an event center here onsite at the Botanical Gardens as well as the historic Payne Mansion, which now houses a Botany museum of art and a learning center. And don’t forget to make a stop in the Garden Shop upon entering or exiting the entire garden. There are some great books and artwork in here, as well as many flowers and plants that you can purchase to take home too.

Selby Botanical Gardens Operating Hours and Admission Fees

Both the downtown and the Spanish Point campus are open daily from 10:00 am until 5:00 pm, but they are both closed on Christmas day. The price of admission is separate for each campus, with the downtown location charging $20 and the Spanish Point location charging $15.

Keep in mind that there is also a membership option. Members enjoy special perks throughout the year, free admission to the gardens whenever they want and discounted guest tickets too.

How Long Should I Plan For My Visit?

How long you spend at the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens Sarasota really depends on your schedule and how much time you want to relax and explore. At a minimum, you’ll need a couple of hours to at least walk around and explore each of the exhibits. However, if you have children who want to play, if you want to have lunch, feed the fish, or just have a seat and admire the views – then you could easily spend an entire morning or afternoon here soaking up the gardens.

Our Personal Advice & Tips for Visiting the Botanical Gardens in Sarasota

Personally speaking, botanical gardens are one of those things that I tend to shrug off sometimes – thinking “oh it’s just plants and gardens.” But honestly, visiting this botanical garden was an absolutely wonderful experience! I spent hours just wandering around, and sitting and relaxing under trees. And I’m telling you, that Koi Pond is super relaxing!

If you ever need a de-stresser…this is THE place to visit in Sarasota! 

A few other tips:

• Kids can actually have a lot of fun here. There are so many interesting exhibits, plus the children’s play areas are great! And they’ll definitely love feeding the fish as well.
• Visiting by yourself – I have to admit, I made a spontaneous visit by myself one day. And I don’t regret it at all (although, Josh was bummed that I went without him). Simply because it was a PERFECT environment just to relax! It was nice to just look, and wander and not really think. Or to sit for a bit and actually have some calm moments of thought for yourself. I absolutely loved it and highly recommend if you need a personal recharge!
• Weather – since most of the botanical garden exhibits are outside, you’ll enjoy it more when it’s not crazy hot outside (or cold…yes it can get chilly here!). As far as rain, while major thunderstorms wouldn’t be fun, a light sprinkle is actually kind of nice. I visited on an overcast day. It was perfect! The air was warm, but there was no bright sun to burn me or make it too bright or hot. And occasionally there was a bit of rain and sprinkles, but that actually added to the ambiance of the experience and the fresh scent from the rain actually made for a wonderful sensory experience!

There is no shortage of amazing beaches in Sarasota and in the nearby area. The Ringling: Ca d’Zan Mansion, Museum of Art and Circus Museum

The Ringling Museum and Mansion is a beautiful Venetian Gothic-style mansion that was built in 1926. It has 60 rooms which you can see while exploring the house’s many exhibits. You can also attend special events at this museum or visit during Christmas for their annual holiday event. The Museum of Art features works from Van Gogh, Matisse and more! The Circus Museum next door is open seasonally and has a large collection of circus-themed art, objects and costumes.

Siesta Key Rum Distillery

Siesta Key Rum Distillery in Siesta Village is an ideal spot to visit in order to see how rum is made in a working distillery. They have daily tours available so you can learn how the various steps are done including mashing, fermenting, distilling and more! At the end of your tour you get to sample their delicious rum too.

Visit Big Top Brewing Company

If you’re a beer lover, a great place to visit is Big Top Brewing Company. They have several beers on tap and also serve food too! You can enjoy the weather while sitting outside on their patio or stop by for their daily tours from 3-7 PM Monday through Saturday.

Things to do in Sarasota on a Budget

If you are on a budget, no worries! There are plenty of things to do in Sarasota that doesn’t cost a lot. For example, visiting the many parks can be a lot of fun. From Payne / Circus Park, to the beautiful Bayfront Park – which is one of our favorites just to stroll around and watch the boats go in and out of the marina and the Bay.

There are also a few places where admission is free, such as the Siesta Key Rum Distillery which offers free samples and free tours and on the last Sunday of the month you can visit the Sarasota Art Museum for free.

It also doesn’t cost much just to stroll around the beautiful St. Armands Circle area, popping into some of the shops to find some fun beachy souvenirs or decor. And don’t forget to buy an inexpensive bag of mini-donuts at Meany’s too (they are amazing!) Last but not least…the stunning beaches are free as well!

Things to do in Sarasota if You Only Have a Few Hours

If you are just stopping through town for only a few hours and want to get a feel of Sarasota. Here are a few things we highly recommend:

• Visit Bayfront Park – stroll around and watch the boats on the bay and maybe grab some food and a drink at the famous O’Leary’s Tiki Bar right there with views!
• Explore St. Armands Circle and grab lunch, some sweets and maybe something fun at the shops
• Spend a bit of time at one of the beaches, either Lido or Siesta Key
• Wander Siesta Key Village and enjoy a little “beach life”
• If the timing works out, perhaps you can take a kayak tour or dolphin boat tour around the Bay

What is Lakewood Ranch?

Lakewood Ranch, Florida, is the top-selling master-planned community in the country. This is a large development that is practically the size of an actual town! At 50 square miles, it’s filled with shopping, dining, arts, entertainment, nature recreation – as well as all the new home choices you can imagine.

Lakewood Ranch community is made up of more than 20 unique villages each offering distinctive homes & amenities. There’s really something for every size family and every stage of life. Some neighborhoods have golf courses, most are gated a few are 55 plus communities. All are close to the Lakewood Ranch  “town centers” where you can find convenient shopping, dining, and local activities.

Where is Lakewood Ranch Located?

Lakewood Ranch is tucked along the I-75 corridor, south of Tampa between Bradenton and Sarasota Florida, along the eastern side of the interstate. The massive development covers over 50 square miles and spans two counties, including Manatee County and Sarasota County. Some Lakewood ranch neighborhoods have Sarasota addresses, others have Bradenton addresses, and a select few neighborhoods actually do have Lakewood Ranch addresses!

Even though residents living in Lakewood Ranch may have an address for Bradenton or Sarasota, the development itself is still quite a few miles from those respective downtown areas. Really, you are on the outskirts of these towns. However, Lakewood Ranch is almost like its own town. There is a lot of development within the community as well as along the roads leading into it, so there’s rarely a need to travel too far for necessities.

While none of this is surprising for an award winning master planned community, it is still nice to know that safety is intentional here.

Lakewood Ranch is an upscale community that provides a superior lifestyle with endless activities and things to do. Separate from the villages and neighborhoods, there are many community amenities that allow you to enjoy an active and fulfilling life in Lakewood Ranch. These include dozens of parks with baseball diamonds, soccer fields, volleyball courts, pool areas and picnic pavilions.  The area is surrounded by numerous parks and there are many more scattered throughout the community and within different neighborhoods.

Activities and Events in Lakewood Ranch

The Lakewood Ranch community hosts multiple community events throughout the year such as carnivals, kids parades, festivals, 5K runs, biking races and more! Additionally, Lakewood Ranch has lively music events that are held regularly at various locations throughout the community. In fact, we arrived in the main Lakewood Ranch town center one Saturday morning to find that they had the streets blocked off for a giant cornhole tournament. It looked like a fun way to spend a weekend morning!

Lakewood Ranch is Great for those Who Love an Active Lifestyle

Lakewood Ranch is also home to many parks where you can plan sports, go walking, biking, fishing and kayaking. In fact, the community includes 150-plus miles of multi-surface trails and nature trails through preserves that you can enjoy for your health, to stay active, or just because you love the outdoors. You’ll also find boardwalks and even disc golf courses to play!

There’s even a large equestrian area as well as a Polo Club where during the season you can watch an exciting polo match (they really are a ton of fun!). There are also multiple fitness centers within the neighborhoods where residents can work out and stay in shape any time of day or night.

Lakewood Ranch is home to multiple golf courses which offer prime opportunities to play. The clubhouses make for a great place to host a party with friends and the golf courses themselves are immaculate. While some are private, others are open to the public as well.

And for those of you who aren’t into the larger golf courses, there’s also a fantastic mini-golf course right in the main LWR Town Center!

Shopping and Dining in Lakewood Ranch and Nearby in Sarasota

Within the Lakewood Ranch Community, you will find shopping and dining options at the various Town Center areas and along the main highways in and out of the various communities. From sushi restaurants, martini bars, pubs, French restaurants and more. You’ll also find charming clothing boutiques, art shops, home decor, flowers and even some chain stores and restaurants throughout Lakewood Ranch main street and along the main highways surrounding the development.

However, just a short drive away in Sarasota is the University Town Center (UTC).

This is a massive shopping, dining and entertainment complex that spans more than 50 acres. There are several department stores within the mall itself, and just across the street near the mall area are many other shops and popular stores including Best Buy, Dicks Sporting Goods, Nordstrom Rack, PGA Superstore as well as numerous restaurants ranging from quick service, fast-casual to finer dining options.

Driving just a bit further you can also check out downtown Sarasota, with all its boutiques and a wide array of restaurants. You can also dine on the water at Marina Jacks or at the famous O’Leary’s Tiki bar overlooking Sarasota Bay. Head across the causeway to St. Armands Circle for luxurious shopping and dining options too.

• Azario (Park East and Espalande) – This is one of our personal favorite Lakewood Ranch neighborhoods. Although, it’s one of the more pricier villages their golf course is new and gorgeous and they have grand plans for future culinary centers, onsite spas, event lawns, etc. and their models are beautiful.
• Country Club East – If you are a golfer, and prefer an upscale lifestyle then this is a fantastic development for you!
• Cresswind – This is a newer 55+ community that has a good number of homes already built, but a couple more phases to go. The homes here are very modern and contemporary. They have a large number of models to choose from and some of them are huge! Great amenities area with multiple pools, including a resistance pool and they regularly have food trucks and events.
• Del Webb – Probably our favorite of all the 55+ communities we’ve ever seen! I mean we love this place (even though we are not yet 55). Their activities calendar was insane — and looked like more fun than a cruise ship! They have an onsite restaurant with regular specials, tons of sports courts, a gorgeous pool and a ton of other events. Beautiful homes and model options, plus, there are a good number of homes already built so it feels like a community that’s being lived in and has a great relaxed vibe.
• Harmony – this is a townhome community that’s great if you don’t want to be in a large community with single-family homes. Plus, the price point is a little lower than some of the others. There is no gate, but they do have a pool, fitness center and “tot lot” for the kiddos to play.
• Indigo – We really like Neal Communities, and they are the builders in Indigo. Prices are pretty moderate in this community (as well as the HOA’s) relative to other neighborhoods and yet they have a ton of amenities including the clubhouse, pool, fitness center, lifestyle director (yes, that’s a thing), dog park and tot lot. They also have pickleball courts and it’s gated.
• Lakewood National Golf Club – This was another fantastic golf community that we really love! It’s huge and the golf course is stunning, as well as their clubhouse area. They have a beautiful pool area with waterfalls overlooking the golf course as well as an onsite restaurant and bar. There are a ton of sport courts here, a fitness center, and an onsite spa!
• Lorraine Lakes – This is a pretty new community with quite a number of homes to be built. What we enjoyed is that they have some really large homes that are great for families, including 2 story homes and we saw numerous homes with fences in the backyard (if that’s something you want). They are so new that they are still building their clubhouse, but it looks to be beautiful with all the water around!
• Mallory Park – Another fairly moderate community with regard to the fees, they also have the standard clubhouse with community pool and fitness center as well as tot lot and it’s gated.
• Polo Run – This is a very new community at the southern part of the development, in Sarasota County. As the name implies, it’s quite near the Polo Club. They haven’t finished building the amenities center or clubhouse yet and very few homes have been built so far. Homes here should run from about $400k to $600k.
• Sapphire Point – This is another very new development with only a few homes built and no clubhouse yet. Homes here should run from $300k – $600k.
• Savanna – This was one of our favorite neighborhoods for families in Lakewood Ranch. It’s quite developed already, with only a final phase to go. There are some great large homes here, with a good bit of space between them (some neighborhoods they seem right on top of each other) and we saw many fences in the backyards throughout + a number of background playsets for the kiddos. However, they do have a community playground as well as a pool, fitness center and dog park.
• Solera – This is another pretty new community with a lot left to build out. They don’t yet have their club house yet (under construction) but they do have some great large floor plans for families. Plus, they have some of the lowest HOA and CDD fees you will find.
• The Isles – This is a luxury community that has just about everything you could want. Homes here start at $600k and go up above a million.
• The Lake Club – This is another luxury community that we really loved! It reminds you of Italy as you drive in with the actual vineyards and architecture. It’s quite large, and they just opened up new phases too which seem to be a bit more modern than the original phases.
• Waterside – This is another very new community with still a lot left to build. But it’s coming along quite fast and is going to be really popular due to the Town Center right nearby as well as all the water views around!  There are actually a couple developments within Waterside – Shoreview and Lakehouse Cove.
• Windward – Another very new community, there are only a few homes built here and they are still building the club house area. The homes here are moderately priced, but also go a bit higher too. There will be a full list of amenities here, just about everything you could want except for golf (they will even have a lifestyle director too).
• Woodleaf Hammock – This is another great townhome community (the single-family home section is already full). We actually found the floorplans to be quite large with good use of space. There are minimal amenities here, mainly a pool, dog park and tot lot.

Are there any retirement communities in Lakewood Ranch?

Yes! Of course, those of retirement age are welcome across many communities in Lakewood Ranch. However, if you are specifically looking for a 55+ for active adults, then you will enjoy the Del Webb and Cresswind neighborhoods. Each of these are technically 55 plus neighborhoods with an incredible number of activities and events.

Which Lakewood Ranch communities are great for families?

The answer to this question depends because every family is a bit different – especially when it comes to budget. All developments have swimming pools, and 14 communities have their own “tot lot” playground area, most neighborhoods offer single family homes and most are also gated for safety.

One thing families might be looking for are large floor plans, especially those with extra family room space that are great for teenagers. During our exploration of the models, we were impressed with the large family home plans available in the villages of Lorraine Lakes, Polo Run, Savanna, and Solera. Not to say these aren’t the only neighborhoods that are great for families. We just really liked their large family floor plans with a lot of space and functionality.

Another consideration for families moving to Lakewood Ranch is if you can have fences and playground equipment in the backyard. Because unfortunately, not all the neighborhoods in Lakewood Ranch allow this although we have seen a few that do allow fences. We don’t have the HOA details and regulations for all of them, but we can confirm that the Savanna village allows fences and we saw many homes that had playground equipment in their backyards for the kids.

Is it expensive to live in Lakewood Ranch Florida?

It really depends on your definition of expensive. Many of the homes currently for sale in Lakewood Ranch start in the $300,000’s and go up from there all the way to the luxury homes that are $1M plus. However, keep in mind that the cost of the home is not the only thing to consider. Neighborhoods will have their own HOA dues that need to be paid as well as CDD fees (which are basically rolled into your taxes). Both HOA and CDD fees will vary between all the neighborhoods – so be sure to get these details in advance when you are looking for homes so you know just what you will be paying.

What’s the cost of living in Lakewood Ranch Florida?

Generally speaking, the cost of living in Lakewood Ranch Florida is only slightly higher than that the US average. However, this really can depend on your tastes and how much you like to spend.

The median cost for Lakewood Ranch rentals is around $3,000 per month, and most homes currently for sale in Lakewood Ranch begin at around $300,000 and go up from there into the millions. Add on top of that your HOA fees, which can range from a couple hundred per month upwards of $1000 depending on the community. And CDD fees range from around $1600+ (again depending on the community).

When it comes to taxes, keep in mind that Lakewood Ranch spans 2 different Florida counties. In general, those in Sarasota County tend to have higher taxes than those who live in Manatee County.

With regard to basic necessities, you won’t find a lot of public transportation out in Lakewood Ranch. Personal transportation is the primary way of getting around. Luckily, Lakewood Ranch is very close to I-75 making transportation pretty easy. There are also plenty of grocery stores, shops, and dining around the area which are all pretty standard prices for Florida. You could go out and get a $20 hamburger at a nice restaurant, or stop off at Culver’s and get one for $4.

Are there alligators in Lakewood Ranch Florida?

It’s Florida. When you live in Florida you should always assume that any body of water could have an alligator in it. Will you encounter them daily? Probably not. But they are around, so you should always be cautious when near the water.

Can you drive golf carts in Lakewood ranch?

The rules around golf carts vary depending on the village / neighborhood where you live in Lakewood Ranch. Many of the neighborhoods do allow them; however, that doesn’t mean that they are allowed on the major county roads. So you might not be able to take them outside the neighborhood, depending on where your neighborhood is located.

Does Lakewood Ranch get hurricanes?

Lakewood Ranch is located in Florida, which always has the possibility of hurricanes. However, LWR is not located directly on the shores of the Gulf of Mexico — it’s actually about 11 miles inland. So there is some protection here from storm surge, but winds could still be an issue if a major storm came through. Also, keep in mind that Lakewood Ranch is a new development so the homes are built to modern hurricane codes and standards.
