Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest (August 23)

Got a sweet tooth? The Great St. Pete Cupcake Contest is back for its 14th year at the Morean Arts Center, and it’s always a fun (and delicious) way to spend a summer afternoon. Pre-register to get your hands on a 12-pack of mini cupcakes made by local bakers—from kids and home bakers to pros and plant-based creators. You’ll get to sample each one and vote for your favorite in the People’s Choice Award.

Thinking of entering as a baker? Go for it! It’s just $15 per flavor, and judging happens before the public arrives. Just be sure to sign up before August 1—this event fills up fast every year.

Bolts Brew Fest (August 1)

Beer meets hockey at the annual Bolts Brew Fest, returning to AMALIE Arena on Friday, August 1, 2025! Hosted by the Tampa Bay Lightning, this craft beer celebration features more than 50 breweries serving up hundreds of beers from local, national, and international brands. Wander through the arena floor and concourse as you sip, play oversized games, snap photos, and soak in the lively atmosphere.

Whether you’re there for autographs, photo ops, or just to people-watch some epic cosplay, there’s always something going on. Hours run from noon to 10 PM on Friday, 10 AM to 10 PM Saturday, and 10 AM to 5 PM Sunday—so you’ve got plenty of time to soak it all in.

Choose from General Admission, VIP, Ruby Pass, or Multipass—VIP perks include early entry, collectible swag, and VIP panel seating. Wine & Chocolate Walk (February 12, 2026)

Indulge in a decadent evening exploring downtown Venice’s shops and restaurants, each offering unique wine and chocolate pairings. This beloved annual event is a favorite for couples and friends looking for a fun and flavorful night out. 

Guests can expect an evening filled with delicious flavors, lively conversation, and a warm, inviting atmosphere. Downtown Venice provides the perfect backdrop, with its twinkling lights, boutique storefronts, and welcoming restaurants creating a truly magical experience. Exotic Race Car Event  (February 21, 2026)

Car enthusiasts and casual spectators alike won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime automotive spectacle as the world-famous 1000 Miglia road race makes its way through Downtown Venice. This legendary 3-day, 1,000-mile journey takes drivers on an incredible route across Florida, from Miami to Naples, Cape Canaveral, West Palm Beach, and back to Miami, with Venice as one of its most exciting stops along the way.

Prepare to be amazed as over 70 vintage race cars and modern supercars cruise into Centennial Park, showcasing a dazzling lineup of rare, historic, and high-performance machines. The event is free and open to the public, making it an unmissable opportunity to witness some of the world’s most stunning and exclusive cars.

The festivities begin at 3 PM, when the Venice AACA Car Club kicks off the celebration with a display of classic and collector vehicles, offering a glimpse into automotive history. The 1000 Miglia race cars make their grand entrance between 4 and 5 PM. Be sure to arrive early, grab a great viewing spot, and be ready to capture an unforgettable moment in Venice’s automotive history!

Italian Feast and Carnival (February 19-22, 2026)

Get ready for a four-day celebration of all things Italian at the Annual Italian Festival hosted by the Italian American Club of Venice. This beloved tradition has brought the community together for an impressive 37 years, offering an authentic taste of Italy with delicious food, live entertainment, and family-friendly fun. At the Venice Airport Festival Grounds, the festival is a must-visit event for locals and visitors alike who want to experience Italian culture in a lively, welcoming atmosphere.

Of course, the highlight of the festival is the incredible Italian cuisine. Taking place Saturday, February 28, and Sunday, March 1, 2026, from 10 AM to 5 PM, this juried art festival brings together talented artists from across the country to showcase their finest work along West Venice Avenue.

Art lovers can browse and purchase a diverse selection of artwork, including captivating sculptures, striking paintings, intricate jewelry, hand-crafted ceramics, and more. As a free outdoor event, the festival is perfect for a leisurely day of strolling, shopping, and soaking in the artistic atmosphere. Parking is available in public lots and nearby street parking, but arriving early is recommended to secure a good spot.

Venice Sharks Tooth Festival (April 11-12, 2026)

Celebrate Venice’s reputation as the “Shark’s Tooth Capital of the World” at Centennial Park with fossil and beach-inspired merchandise vendors, live music, and delicious food. Although technically, it doesn’t take place until Spring, as it’s scheduled for April, it’s such a great event that we want to ensure you have plenty of notice to bookmark it in your calendar! 

Venice’s beaches are renowned for their abundance of fossilized shark teeth, which attract enthusiasts worldwide. The area’s unique geological history has resulted in a rich deposit of these fossils along its shores. You can check out some great fossil finds on our YouTube video here. 

This weekend-long family-friendly festival is free and packed with fun activities for all ages. Kids can enjoy the interactive shark-themed play area, which includes face painting, shark tooth hunting, and more. 

While leashed dogs are permitted at the festival, it is recommended that pets be left at home due to the expected crowds. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs to enjoy the musical performances comfortably; however, coolers are not allowed.

Wellen Park® Events and Festivals

You’re missing out if you haven’t attended an event at Wellen Park yet! It’s not just a place to live—it’s a whole lifestyle. The downtown area is the heart of it all, with live music, markets, and fun events happening all the time. The downtown area is regularly alive with the Friday Night Concert Series, the ever-popular Wellen Night Market, and rotating live performances that turn an ordinary evening into a reason to hang out a little longer. On top of that, there are ongoing community offerings like toddler groups, theatre workshops, line dancing classes and other casual gatherings that make it feel easy to plug in whether you live nearby or are just visiting from a bit farther afield.

Luminescence Festival  (January 9, 2026)

This is one of those events that feels genuinely magical without trying too hard. Think glowing installations, artful lighting, and an evening atmosphere that’s perfect for wandering with friends or family. Set in Wellen Park’s town center, it’s a brand new event for the cooler winter months and is designed to be immersive rather than rushed. It runs from 5pm  onwards and is free to attend. The luminary bags are on a first come first served basis though so get there early to make sure you don’t miss out. Participants can personalize their luminary bags with New Year wishes or messages of rememberance, which adds a special intimate vibe to the event. Take part in the parade and release and then enjoy the live music, art, and fireworks.

Wellen Night Market  (2nd Thursday of every month)

If you love browsing handmade goods with a drink in hand, the Wellen Night Market is an easy favorite. Local makers, small businesses, and food vendors line the streets, often with live music adding to the vibe. It’s casual, social, and very much a “let’s just stroll and see what we find” kind of evening. These markets are usually free to attend, making them a low-key way to experience the community while supporting local creatives.

Wellen Park Fine Arts Festival (February 15th, 2026)

The Wellen Park Fine Arts Festival draws artists from across the region and turns the downtown area into an open-air gallery. You’ll find everything from paintings and photography to sculpture and functional art, all set against Wellen Park’s waterfront backdrop. Admission is typically free, making it a lovely daytime event to wander through, chat with artists, and maybe come home with something truly one-of-a-kind.

Half Marathon & 5K (March 21st, 2026)

Whether you’re running or cheering from the sidelines, the Wellen Park Half Marathon & 5K is a standout winter event. The course weaves through the community, showing off the scenery while keeping things festive. Registration fees vary by race and timing, but it’s well-organized and welcoming to runners of all levels. Even if racing isn’t your thing, it’s a fun morning to be out and about in Wellen Park, soaking up the energy.

Parking is available at North Beach Park Plaza, offering over 600 spaces at $3 per hour. Additionally, the LeeTran trolley service is a regular public transport option. 

The best thing about this event is that while it’s free to attend, the festival is a huge fundraising event for local charitable initiatives. Proceeds from the event support everything from local eye surgeries and vision care to scholarships for students and programs like Southeastern Guide Dogs. It also helps fund youth sports, large-print books for the library, and essential resources for local schools.

Sarasota Winefest (March 21, 2026)

Mark your calendar for the Sarasota Wine Festival on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Selby Five Points Park in Downtown Sarasota! Enjoy an unforgettable evening filled with world-class wines, craft cocktails, gourmet food trucks, live music, and unique lifestyle vendors.

General Admission (6–9 PM) includes unlimited wine tastings, a souvenir wine glass and tote bag, a food truck voucher, craft cocktail samples, and access to a pop-up wine shop.

Sarasota Jazz Festival (March 9-14, 2026)

Tickets are on sale now for the 46th annual Jazz Festival, which will take place March 9-14 at various venues throughout Sarasota. Music lovers can enjoy a week of this fantastic festival, which offers world-class cabaret performances and lively jazz trolley pub crawls. Tickets are sold individually for each event so that you can curate your perfect jazz experience. Food and drinks will be available at all venues. 

Jazz enthusiasts can upgrade to a VIP Experience, which includes priority seating at all main stage performances, entry to the Monday Night Jazz Cabaret, access to the Jazz Trolley Pub Crawl, and an exclusive VIP Reception on March 17 featuring a special performance by Danny Spinoff at the John C. St Petersburg Firestone Grand Prix (Feb 27 – March 1 2026)

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, presented by RP Funding, will ignite the streets of downtown St. Petersburg from February 27 to March 1, 2026. This thrilling event features a 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary circuit that winds through iconic landmarks such as Pioneer Park, the Duke Energy Center for the Arts, and The Dalí Museum. It even incorporates sections of the Albert Whitted Airport runway, all against the stunning backdrop of Tampa Bay.

Beyond the high-speed racing action, attendees can look forward to a festival-like atmosphere featuring speed zones, an IndyCar Series Fan Village, beer gardens, driver autograph sessions, and interactive games and exhibits. 

Parking is available at several downtown garages, including the SouthCore Garage, Sundial Garage, and the University of South Florida (USF) Garage. Additional parking can be found at Tropicana Field, with a free shuttle service running to and from the race venue. Accessible parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and fans are encouraged to use public transportation or ride-sharing services for easier access.

Tickets start at $25 for a single day and go up to three-day general admission, priced at $75 for adults and $65 for children 12 and under. There’s also an option for three-day grandstand seats, which offer reserved seating with excellent views for just $135. You can purchase tickets here.

Florida Strawberry Festival (February 26 – March 8, 2026)

The Florida Strawberry Festival has been a cherished tradition since 1930, celebrating its 91st annual event in 2026. It’s one of the most popular events in the state, attracting over 600,000 visitors each year.  This annual celebration honors the region’s rich strawberry harvest with entertainment, agriculture, and family-friendly activities. It runs from February 26 to March 8, 2026, in Plant City, Florida. 

Attendees can explore displays showcasing local agriculture, including youth livestock shows and the Neighborhood Village, which features homemade crafts and goods. Island Fest (March 28-29, 2026)

The 34th Annual Island Fest in Islamorada will be held March 28-29, 2026, at Founders Park (MM 87 Bayside). Abundant Amenities: One of the biggest advantages of living in a 55+ community is access to extensive amenities not usually found in traditional neighborhoods. For example, Brightmore will have a 21,000-square-foot clubhouse with a fitness center, movement rooms and classes, games rooms, and more. And don’t forget the full-time on-site lifestyle director who will plan a full calendar of events and activities year-round!

Low Maintenance: Homes are designed for ease of care, with features like lawn maintenance included in HOA fees.

Can family members visit & stay with me?

Of course! You are welcome to have your family & grandchildren come visit and stay with you anytime you wish so they can enjoy the resort lifestyle too. You will just need to follow specific rules in the HOA about the length of stay to ensure that they are not considered “residents” at any point.

During the Prohibition era of the late 1920s and early 1930s, Snook Haven, Venice, FL, emerged as a hidden refuge for smugglers looking to unload contraband along the Myakka River’s shores. Its concealed grounds, on a remote peninsula upstream from the Gulf of Mexico, provided the perfect cover for illicit activities. Unbeknownst to the occupiers then, it was the beginning of a long history and reputation as a community watering hole. 

Snook Haven’s picturesque “Old Florida” landscape was soon discovered by Hollywood, who began using it as a filming location for exotic jungle movies like “Prestige” and “Tarzan’s Revenge” in the 1930s.

Villani & Co in Wellen Park ®

Villani & Co in Wellen Park is the place to go if you’re in the mood for great steaks, seafood or a raw bar! The modern intimate atmosphere is perfect for a night out with friends or a nice lunch. Dinner offers an elevated experience with high-quality steak and seafood options while lunch is more casual with lighter fare.

For lunch, my pick is the Library Steak salad with a gorgonzola vinaigrette that is simply outstanding! Or if you are in the mood for something unique and comforting, Josh recommends the Fried Green Tomato melt with pimento cheese! They have some great daily and weekly specials and an amazing Sunday Brunch offering too! 

As with all the restaurants here, there is both indoor and outdoor dining options.

The Banyan House Restaurant

The Banyan House in Wellen Park is a truly memorable experience, from the food to the atmosphere! This lakeside restaurant offers a sophisticated and upscale experience that’s perfect for a night out or a special occasion. Outside dining overlooks the lake, but the inside offers a beautiful atmosphere with the towering tree and twinkling lights. 

Yes, there are beautiful giant trees inside the restaurant!

Dinner is a culinary affair here from steaks, rack of lamb, pot roast to seafood such as salmon and lobster. While lunch offers an array of delectable gourmet sandwiches. You can also enjoy the ambiance of the bustling bar area with some great drink options including the “under the banyan tree” they also have a great happy hour and serve small plate options from from 2:30 – 4 pm. 

Oak & Stone Wellen Park ®

For a more laid-back environment with a fun twist, Oak & Stone in Wellen Park presents a vast selection of craft beers and artisanal pizzas. The restaurant has a great atmosphere with indoor / outdoor dining that flows seamlessly and there’s a great rooftop bar with stunning views too!

While they are known for their pizzas (I’m a fan of the white pizza!) they also have many other items to choose from on the menu. From burgers, salads to sandwiches. We’ve visited a few times and always had tasty meals!

The interactive beer wall is a standout feature with over 50+ beers! Simply scan your card, pour your own glass (however much you want, you simply pay by the oz.) – this way you can sample them all!

Acqua Pazza Coastal Italian in Wellen Park ®

Dive into the bold flavors of the Italian Riviera at Acqua Pazza. Inspired by the Mediterranean and Adriatic regions of Italy, this is the newest restaurant in downtown Wellen Park and quickly became a favorite of ours! We love the modern, elegant yet light and airy design of the restaurant. With calming colors that definitely remind you of the sea – you can imagine sipping cocktails with an ocean breeze!

Enjoy indoor or alfresco dining for lunch and dinner. Our personal appetizer was the Arancini – fried risotto and mozzarella which changes daily as a chef’s specialty. As far as pasta goes, we highly recommend the lobster ravioli – it was incredible and stuffed full of lobster! 

And for dessert, don’t skip on the Canoli pie! Yes, a Canoli…in a pie! It’s out of this world delicious!

None of these are considered “fast food” however, they are more like fast casual dining options and a couple of full-service options too. What’s also convenient is that this shopping center is where the Publix supermarket is. So it’s super easy to get in and out, there’s lots of parking and it’s perfect if you want a more casual bite to eat or even some take out food to bring back home.

Irma’s Tacos

Irma’s Tacos is actually one of our favorite restaurants in the Wellen Park area! Choose from a huge assortment of gourmet unique taco options. Each is served on a homemade corn or flour tortilla made right here in the restaurant. They also have some great bowl options and of course, a fantastic selection of tequila and other spirits for some great cocktails.

Louie’s Bistro

At Louie’s Bistro, you’ll find a relaxed and casual setting with a bar area serving quick bites throughout the day. They also have a great outdoor back patio area with peaceful views of downtown Wellen Park. Since it’s next to the Wellen Park Welcome Center, it’s also a popular spot for meetings and special events too. In fact, we typically meet our clients here at the Welcome Center before going on a tour of Wellen Park. So it’s nice to have some food and drinks readily available next door!

Bocca Lupo Pizza

Wood-fired perfection is the hallmark of Bocca Lupo Pizza. Their thin-crust pizzas with gourmet toppings like truffle oil and prosciutto elevate the pizza experience to a whole new level. They also have an easy take-out window so you can pick up your pizza to go.

Peachwave Self-Serve Frozen Yogurt

If you want a little something sweet but slightly on the healthier side, then check out Peachwave Self-serve frozen yogurt just a few doors down from the Publix entrance. We always enjoy these self-serve frozen yogurt shops because we can choose exactly how much we want to eat, and even add our own custom topping options.

Fuji Sushi & Hibachi Noodles

Enjoy a theatrical meal at Fuji Sushi & Hibachi Noodles. The chefs entertain with skillful hibachi cooking right before your eyes, crafting dishes like sizzling steak and tender shrimp. They also offer more simple entrees and are perfect for take out dining at your house.

Of course every shopping center needs to have a great Chinese restaurant! And this is a good one with many classics to choose from as well as some unique specialities. Again, this is a great quick and easy option for take out food too.

We’ve visited all of these Venice Florida dog parks with our beloved Hana (Labrador). We enjoy visiting all these parks as humans, and Hana has given her paw of approval too!

In Case You Are Wondering…What Is A Dog Park?

A dog park is a dedicated open space that allows dogs to play, exercise, and socialize off-leash in a controlled environment (typically with a fence) under the supervision of their owners. They are great spaces where dogs can run free to explore safely, make friends and play, and the owners can relax and even socialize too.

Beyond the safety aspect, many dog parks will have amenities such as water (super important here in Florida), perhaps some shady areas, benches for owners and poop-disposal stations. We have traveled a lot with our dog, Hana. And whenever we make a stop whether it’s for a vacation or just a stopover, we often will look for the nearest and best dog park where she can stretch her legs and have some fun too.

Benefits of Visiting a Dog Park With Your Pet

Visiting a dog park with our furry companions offers a host of advantages for both their well-being and ours. Our pup enjoys the stimulation of being outside with all the new smells (oh she could smell all day long!) as well as being able to socialize with other dogs and have fun. Socializing really is such an important aspect for your dog, and we’ve been taking Hana to dog parks since she was a pup. Surely it’s part of the reason she’s the social butterfly that she is!

As Humans, We Really Enjoy the Dog Park Too!

But it’s not just Hana that enjoys visiting the dog park. As humans, we find it relaxing as well. It’s nice to get out of the house to enjoy the fresh air and go for a stroll. We enjoy walking around the parks ourselves, just enjoying life and getting lost in our thoughts. And we can relax knowing that Hana is safe. Plus, seeing her have fun makes us happy! We also get the chance to interact with other cute doggos and socialize with other owners too.

Venice Florida Dog Parks (and Wellen Park & Sarasota Areas)

We’ve found some really great dog parks around the country and around Florida too. Luckily for us, after making our home here in Venice years ago, we’ve been able to find some really great dog parks in Venice, FL and the nearby area that we really enjoy visiting.

So to make it easy for you, we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite dog parks around Venice and the Sarasota areas, where pet owners can enjoy quality time with their furry friends. These parks offer amenities ranging from off-leash play areas to trails and even beach access, ensuring a fun outing for everyone!

1. Woodmere Dog Park Venice FL

Location: 3951 Woodmere Park Blvd, Venice, FL 34293

Woodmere Dog Park is our go-to dog park here in Venice. It’s conveniently located, in fact, we often stop by for a visit when we are out around town running errands. It’s easy to get in and out, good parking, and it’s just a lovely park in general.

The shade is awesome here, with beautiful large trees and some grassy spots. There are nice benches and even a covered area for sitting. Plenty of water is available for the dogs, and even a fun water spout which Hana loves to play with!

One of our favorite things about this park is that there is a sort of trail that goes around the perimeter. So we use it as our time to get our steps in for the day. Josh and I walk around and talk, take deep breaths of fresh air, and it kinda feels like a small nature trail. And Hana can run off and play and return to us at any time (although, being the loyal girl she is she pretty much stays right next to us the whole time!).

Another nice perk to this park is that there are often toys and tennis balls provided, either by volunteers or the local parks department. One visit we stumbled across a giant pile of fresh new tennis balls ready to be slobbered on!

2. Brohard Paw Park And Dog Beach

Location: 1600 Harbor Dr. S, Venice, FL 34285

This is another one of our favorite and most visited dog parks in Venice. The Brohard Paw Park is actually 2 parks in one. There is a fenced area near the parking lot (for both large and small dogs) where dogs can run and place safely. There are benches, a covered area, and a water and washing station.

But the best thing about this park is that if you go out the back of the fenced dog park area, there is a fenced pathway that leads all the way to a dog-friendly section of the beach alongside the Gulf of Mexico! This is the Brohard dog beach.

The Brohard Dog Beach is the ONLY off-leash dog-friendly beach in the Sarasota area! Here dogs can frolic in the ocean and play in the sand. In fact, this is Hana’s “Happy Place” because she is a beach girl and would relax here all day long if she could. And when you leave the beach, it’s nice to have the dog wash area back in the fenced park before you get to your car so you can rinse the sand and salt water off your pup.

Another perk of this beach area is that it is actually a very nice beach that is swimmable! So you really can have a proper beach day yourself alongside your fur-baby.

3. Blue Heron Dog Park Near Wellen Park

Location: 11755 Blue Heron Circle, Venice, FL 34293

As you may know by now, we are out in Wellen Park frequently helping our real estate clients find homes in the different communities out here. And we also visit the downtown Wellen Park area for fun, such as enjoying the restaurants and farmers market on the weekends. So sometimes Hana is with us in the car.

When she’s getting a little restless or we want her to have some fun too, we’ll make a stop over at the Blue Heron Dog park. Located off River Road, this park is actually connected by walking trails to a couple of the Wellen Park communities (Oasis and Renaissance).

It’s a beautiful park that Hana (and the two of us) really love! There are separate areas for small and large dogs, really nice grass, a bit of shade and some benches. It’s not super large, but it’s enough. There is also water available and before or after running in the park there are some nice walking trails that you can enjoy on a nice day.

Oh, and there is a small playground adjacent to the dog park so your two-legged kiddos can have some fun too.

Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park In Englewood

Location: 6791 San Casa Dr., Englewood, FL 34224

If you happen to be down in the Englewood area just south of Venice and Wellen Park, then you may want to make a stop off at this dog park. It’s HUGE! The Ann and Chuck Dever dog park is a fantastic spot to take your pup, especially if they enjoy running!

We stumbled across this park a few years ago because we were running errands for some real estate listings in the Englewood area and visiting a client. Hana was in the car with us and our clients suggested this park because it was amazing to run around.

And they were right!

This dog park is a paradise for dogs who want large, open space to run fast or for long distances. There is a small dog area too, but the large dog area is massive. The dog park is a part of a larger park complex (it’s huge really) with a number of sports fields, courts, trails and picnic areas.

Bay Street Dog Park Osprey, FL

Location: 300 East Bay St, Osprey, FL 34229

When we are looking to change up the scenery or when we are traveling highway 41 between Venice and Sarasota, we often make a stop at the Bay Street Dog Park in Osprey, FL. It’s conveniently located only a block off of Tamiami and it’s a really nice and well-maintained dog park. There is a small and large dog fenced area, as well as drinking water and even some fun agility items for the dogs to play on or jump around.

It’s not a large park, but it really is very nice. And the trees are huge and beautiful, providing lots of nice shade. It really is a tranquil environment and a pleasant park to visit.

Gillespie Dog Park In Sarasota

Location: 710 N Osprey Ave, Sarasota, FL 34236

In Sarasota, Gillespie Dog Park is a great urban space for dogs to enjoy off-leash play with two separate fenced areas. It’s equipped with a covered seating area for owners and water stations to keep dogs hydrated.

We’ve made a stop by this park a couple of times when we were up in downtown Sarasota running errands or visiting the weekend Sarasota Farmers Market (which is huge!). This dog park is conveniently located near downtown, so we can easily pop over and let Hana run free for a bit, make some friends and have some fun.

17Th Street Dog Park In Sarasota

Location: 4570 17th St, Sarasota, FL 34235

If you happen to be up in Sarasota, another super popular dog park is the 17th street dog park. This is actually one of the most beloved dog parks in Sarasota. It’s a part of a larger public park area with sports fields, bt the dog park area is also quite huge! It is a well-loved dog park in Sarasota that provides a serene environment, ideal for both playful pups and socializing with fellow dog owners.

There is a large and small dog area, and wide open space for the dogs to run and play. There is a bit of shade and some benches, and of course water for the dogs to stay hydrated.

We actually make it a point to visit this Sarasota dog park whenever we take trips up to drop off of pick up friends / family (or each other) at the Sarasota Airport. Hana likes to go on this car rides, so this makes for a fun activity. And sometimes if I’m heading to the airport to pick someone up and perhaps I’m a little early, we’ll stop at the dog park until they land. Then we hop in the car to go fetch them.

Tips For Bringing Your Pet To The Dog Park

For seasoned dog owners, you may already know some of these tips for bringing your dog to the dog park. However, for newbies or if you are new to Florida, here are a few tips to be prepared and to keep your dog safe and more importantly, cool and hydrated in these dog parks!

Supplies to Bring:

• Water – super important in Florida: Always bring fresh water and a bowl. Even though most of these parks have water provided, it’s always good to have some on hand just in case. It gets so hot here in the summer, you never want your pup to get dehydrated or overheat.
• Leash: Even in off-leash parks, have a leash on hand.
• Waste bags: Always pick up after our pets. Again, just in case they run out at the park.

The Basics – Health and Park Etiquette:

• Always keep our pets up-to-date on vaccinations.
• Ensure they have flea and tick prevention.
• Pets should be in good health to avoid spreading illnesses.
• Understand and follow the park’s rules.
• Keep an eye on our pets at all times (we often see pets run off while their owners are talking, and then they take a poo and no one saw it!)
• Always, always pick up after your pet!
• Be prepared to intervene if play becomes too rough.

Safety First:

• Remove our pets’ leashes upon entering the off-leash area to prevent tangling.
• Avoid bringing food to the park to prevent conflicts among dogs.
• Monitor interactions with other dogs, especially when they are new to each other.

Where is Caspersen Beach & How to Get There?

Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida, is situated on the Gulf of Mexico, just south of Sarasota. The beach stretches for about a mile and a half, but if you keep walking southward, you can reach Manasota Key, about four miles along the coast. 

Directions to Caspersen Beach are pretty straightforward, even if you’re unfamiliar with the area. If you’re driving from Sarasota, take US-41 south and turn right onto East Venice Avenue and then turn south onto Harbor Drive, which will take you directly to Caspersen beach (all the way at the end of the road). If you’re coming from further afield, the closest airport is Sarasota-Bradenton International Airport, which is approximately 30-45 minutes away by car.

Why Caspersen Beach in Venice, Florida is So Popular

Caspersen Beach, FL, is known for its stunning beauty and natural surroundings. One of its main distinctions is that you won’t find any hotels on Caspersen Beach. Unlike many beaches in the area, there are no condos or homes along the shoreline, giving visitors a feeling of being completely immersed in nature. 

Sarasota County maintains the beach and park and has implemented practices to ensure that Caspersen remains a pristine natural habitat for all. Further, Caspersen has Blue Wave Certification, an Environmental Certification ensuring it stays unpolluted and undeveloped. No camping, tobacco products, or fires are allowed on this stretch of coastline.

The beach is over 9000 feet long, with two-thirds left in its natural form. The clear blue waters are perfect for swimming or wading. But what really sets Caspersen Beach apart is its abundance of shark teeth. If you’re a fan of shark tooth hunting, this is the place to be. 

Caspersen Beach is Known as the Venice Shark Tooth Beach

One of the main reasons visitors flock to this seaside oasis is for the chance to hunt for fossilised shark teeth. This beach is known as the “Venice Shark Tooth Beach” because it’s one of the best places in the world to find them. 

On Caspersen Beach, Shark teeth are easy to spot, and visitors can spend hours combing through the sand to find their treasures. The best time to hunt for shark teeth is at low tide when the teeth are exposed in shallow water. Keep in mind that fossilised shark teeth are a non-renewable resource, so it’s important to follow the rules and regulations when hunting for them. That said, Caspersen Beach sharks’ teeth are a major attraction, and an activity that all ages and abilities can enjoy.

Caspersen Beach Weather

Being in Florida, Caspersen Beach has a subtropical climate, with hot, humid summers and mild winters. 

The best time to visit is from November to April, when temperatures are cooler, and there is less humidity. During this time, average temperatures range from the mid-60s to the mid-80s, making it perfect weather for swimming, sunbathing, and exploring the beach. 

Florida is known for its sunny weather, and Caspersen Beach is no exception. Be sure to bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect your skin and eyes from the intense UV rays.

Keep in mind that hurricane season runs from June through November, so be sure to check the weather forecast before planning your trip.

Caspersen Beach Tides

If you plan to hunt for shark teeth, knowing the tides is essential. The tides can vary greatly depending on the time of year and the phase of the moon, so be sure to check the tide charts before you go and plan your visit accordingly. 

At Caspersen Beach, low tides are the best time to search for teeth, as they will most likely be exposed on the sand. High tide, on the other hand, can make it challenging to find teeth and be dangerous if you’re not a strong swimmer since the beach is not very wide.

Caspersen Beach Parking

One of the best things about Caspersen Beach is that parking is free! There are several parking areas available, including disability-accessible spaces. The main parking lot is at the beach entrance, but several smaller lots are scattered throughout the park. Parking at the northern side, near Sharky’s On The Pier, fills up pretty fast, leaving the lot at the south side with more available space a lot of the time. 

Remember that the parking lots can fill up quickly during peak season, so arrive early to ensure you get a spot.

Are There Any Caspersen Beach Hotels? 

Venice, Florida, has a wealth of excellent hotels to choose from if you are visiting the area. However, you will not find any of them on Caspersen Beach. One of the most attractive features of this rugged shoreline is the natural, unspoiled terrain that lets you immerse in the ecology and wildlife. 

Thankfully, you won’t have too far to go to find somewhere you can lay your head after a day enjoying the sun and sea. Just north of the beach in historic Venice, and at nearby beaches such as Manasota, Venice Beach, and Nokomis Beach, you’ll find plenty of enticing accommodation spanning a range of budgets.

Facilities at Caspersen Beach

Caspersen Beach, FL, has several visitor facilities, including showers, picnic tables, and grills. The restrooms were refurbished in 2012 but are still in excellent condition and have disability access.

Parents should note no lifeguards are on duty at this Sarasota County beach. There are strong currents and undertows, so be cautious when entering the water and swim at your own risk. 

Other Things to Do at Caspersen Beach

Whatever your reason for visiting Caspersen Beach, you have plenty of choices. Beach lovers come here to swim, snorkel among some of the rocks, and fish. 

The beach park has a lovely boardwalk and a kayak launch area, making it easy to explore the nearby waterways. 

For those looking to connect to the Legacy Biking/Walking Trail, there is a convenient trailhead at the beach and free bicycle racks if you want to lock up your bike and take a break or stop at the ADA children’s playground. 

You won’t be disappointed here if you’re looking for a wildlife experience. Caspersen Beach is home to various wildlife, including sea turtles, dolphins, and various species of birds. While it can be exciting to spot these creatures, it is important to respect their space and not disturb them.

In fact, sea turtles nest every year along southwest Florida’s beaches. Sea turtle nesting season officially begins on May 1 and goes through October. During this time, all the beaches in the area including Caspersen will have turtle nests marked off. Please be extra cautious and do not disturb these nests or any baby turtles that you see hatching and making their way to the sea in the early morning hours.

Additionally, it’s worth noting that it is illegal to remove live shells, sand dollars, starfish, and other marine life from the beach. So if you’re planning on shark teeth hunting, bring a sifter or a small shovel to sift through the sand and look for teeth without inadvertently taking any hitchhiking sealife home! 

Is Caspersen Beach Dog-Friendly?

One final note worth mentioning: sadly, no dogs are allowed on Caspersen Beach. However, it’s not all bad news for your furry, sea-loving pooch.

Just a few minutes drive north, just off Harbor Drive (near the Venice Lake Golf Course), is Brohard Beach – the only dog-friendly beach in Sarasota. This off-lead dog beach has a fully fenced-in dog park with separate areas for large and small dogs. It’s a beautiful park with grass, trees, benches, water fountains for the dogs, and a dog-washing area! And YES, you can also find shark teeth at Brohard Dog Beach! 

Is It Worth Visiting Caspersen Beach? 

We get a LOT of questions about where to go and what to do in Venice, FL, and Caspersen Beach is always near the top of our recommendations list. It truly is one of the most beautiful beaches in Florida (and probably the world!) It’s full of environmental interest, active pursuits, relaxing spaces, stunning Gulf views, and prehistoric treasures. What Is the Legacy Trail?

The Legacy Trail Sarasota is one of Florida’s most wonderful stretches of paved trail running all the way from Venice to Sarasota. It connects communities and neighborhoods in Sarasota as well as connecting to towns south of Sarasota including Osprey, Nokomis and Venice. The trail passes through a variety of hot spots, nature preserves, and neighborhoods and even goes right through Oscar Scherer State Park.

Although some use it for travel purposes, most people enjoy the trail for exercise or just enjoying the outdoors. Exploring the Legacy Trail can be quite therapeutic due to many of the undeveloped areas of the trail that allow you to feel more in tune with nature. The History of the Legacy Trail

The Legacy Trail in Sarasota has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. The newly constructed Seaboard Air Line Railway was ready for use in November of 1911, with the first passenger coach riding across it on the 12th of that month. However, it would take another 16 years before the Venice Train Depot would open with a railroad that helped locals survive some of the most trying times, including the Great Depression.

The railroad would continue to be used over the next several decades, helping transport cadets of the Kentucky Military Institute to their Venice classes and patients to and from the office of Dr. Albee. Although regularly used to bring goods into the city, even Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus used this railroad for their traveling circus! Unfortunately, by January 1992, service on the railway was discontinued for good.

Despite sitting for quite some time, Sarasota County eventually purchased the Venice Train Depot in 2003, restoring it to ensure that locals and tourists alike would have access to a little piece of incredible history in the area. It has since become a trailhead for the Legacy Trail Sarasota, often considered a starting point for those who want to experience every inch of the trail. And while the initial path was roughly 12.5 miles long, it has since been extended by an additional 7.5 miles. Visitors can still expect to see some upcoming changes, with overpasses set to be developed on both Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road.

How Long Is the Legacy Trail and Where Does It Go?

The Legacy Trail runs from Venice to Sarasota and is nearly 20 miles long, but it wasn’t always that way! A recent extension finished in 2022 added an extra 7.5 miles, stretching the trail even further into the downtown section of Sarasota by Payne Park. If you take this trail, you can stop at many places throughout the journey, starting with Legacy Park. Once you’re on the way, you will pass other local hot spots, such as Nokomis Riverview Park, Shakett Creek, Oscar Scherer State Park, and the Osprey Junction Trailhead, ending in Downton Sarasota by Payne Park.

The Legacy Trail access points are dotted all the way along the route, and it is so long that it takes you through heavily forested areas before bringing you into the bustling city, where you can stop and grab a bite to eat at places like Five-O Donuts or Fresh Mozzarella Pizzeria. Venice to Sarasota – Where does the Legacy Trail start? 

The southern portion of the trail takes you through the town of Venice. You can choose to start in Shamrock Park in the South Venice Neighborhood and take the Venetian Waterway trail that follows the Intracoastal and connects to popular areas of historic Venice Island. From there, you can go to the Venice Train Depot just off Venice Island and connect to the main Legacy Trail and head up north of Venice through Nokomis, Oscar Scherer State Park and on up to Sarasota. Whether you do the whole route from Venice to Sarasota, or just part of it, you are in for a great time because it is a fantastic trail.

North Port to Sarasota via New Extension!

In September 2022 the North Port Extension officially opened which connected the Legacy Trail to the town of North Port, which is east of Venice. Now trail users can enjoy a trip through the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve and other beautiful nature areas, connecting to other trails and going right into the North Port and Mineral Springs area.

Is There Parking Available for the Legacy Trail?

If you plan to drive to the Legacy Trail before heading off, you will want to know where to park your vehicle. The good news is that there are plenty of options throughout the trail, so no matter where you start your journey, you shouldn’t have difficulty finding a safe space to park your car. Some of the different places that provide public parking include:

Does the Legacy Trail Have Road Crossings?

Most of the Legacy Trail is road-crossing free. The trail is mostly designed to avoid or go around major roads, or there are bridges or tunnels under and over roads. However, there are a few places where the trail does actually cross the road.

In those few cases of road-crossings, there are signs to let you know and signs and signals for the cars to stop on the road. There’s also a distinct crosswalk area that you should use when you cross the roadway. However, it’s important that you pay attention and proceed with caution through the few road-crossings that there are. Be sure to look both ways and never assume that cars will stop.

How Difficult is the Legacy Trail?

Like much of Florida, the Sarasota area is quite flat. So the Legacy Trail does not have any natural hills to climb and is known to be a very easy trail no matter if you are walking, jogging or biking. 

The only hills you may encounter are raised trail bridges that go up and over major roads. And many of these bridges offer the option for you to stay at ground level and just go around the bridge and cross the road. However, the raised bridge allows for a much safer road crossing and you don’t have to stop if you are traveling fast.

If you are biking the Legacy Trail and have trouble with the bridges on a bicycle, then you can always walk your bike to the top and then enjoy the breeze as you ride down.

What’s Allowed on the Trail?

Before you head out on your journey on the Legacy Trail, it helps to know what is and isn’t allowed. Some people love walking the trail, and while it’s an option, there are other ways to travel through it. If you don’t want to walk or jog, you can ride a traditional bicycle, e-bike, or roller skates as you navigate your way around.
