When most people think of a 55+ community, they might picture a quiet retirement village where relaxation precedes excitement. However, modern 55+ communities are shattering that outdated image, especially in Florida. Today, these communities are vibrant, active, and full of life, offering residents a luxurious, resort-style retirement experience.
One standout example of this new wave of 55+ living is Brightmore Wellen Park. Located in one of Florida’s most desirable areas, this community redefines retirement living by blending luxury amenities, a thriving social scene, and an active lifestyle. So, if you’re considering moving to a Florida retirement community but want something more vibrant, active, and fun, then perhaps Brightmore Wellen Park is the perfect fit.
What is a 55+ Community?
A 55+ community, sometimes called an active adult community, is a residential area tailored for individuals aged 55 and above who want to enjoy their golden years in a relaxed yet active environment. These neighborhoods often feature convenient amenities close to shopping, dining, and local attractions.
Homes in these communities are usually smaller, ideal for those who want to downsize or prefer a house that needs less maintenance. However, they do still offer many different home sizes and floorplans. So, whether you want to downsize or have enough space to host the entire family for holidays, you will have plenty of choices.
In the past, 55+ communities were often seen as quiet retirement havens, but today’s versions have evolved significantly. Modern 55+ communities, like Brightmore Wellen Park, offer more than just a place to live. They are central to a lifestyle built around luxury, activity, and connection.
Breaking the Stigma of 55+ Communities
Baby boomers have always approached life differently from the generations before them. As the generation that grew up during a time of counterculture and helped shape the modern world, they are now redefining what it means to age. From their lifestyle choices to where they live after receiving their first AARP letters, boomers continue to pave new paths as they enter their later years.
Given this vibrancy and zest for challenging the mundane, it’s no surprise that this generation has thrown out the old stereotype that 55+ communities are slow-paced and uneventful. Gone are the days when moving to a 55+ community meant “slowing down.”
Today, Florida retirement communities are designed with activity and social engagement in mind. Now coined as “active adult communities,” they reflect a shift away from outdated stereotypes and highlight a more modern and vibrant approach to aging. In contrast to traditional retirement homes, these communities offer an independent lifestyle with fitness options, social events, and lively activities like happy hours and on-site lounges or dance halls.
Brightmore Wellen Park exemplifies this shift, offering amenities and experiences that resemble those of a high-end resort rather than a retirement home.
For example, at Brightmore, residents stay active through fitness classes, lawn yoga, biking, and social events. The focus is on creating a vibrant, fulfilling lifestyle that makes every day feel like a vacation. Typically, residents of these communities are active, independent adults looking to downsize without compromising their quality of life.
Pros and Cons of Living in a 55+ Community
As in any community, there are both pros and cons to living in a luxury 55+ community. Weighing these against each other will help you decide if Florida’s 55+ living options are the best move for you.
Pros of :
Widespread Availability: 55+ communities can be found across the U.S., making it easy to find a home that suits your needs. 55 and over communities in Florida offer a range of resort-style retirement living options. In our opinion, and that of the families we’ve helped secure homes in the area, Brightmore Wellen Park is one of the best new construction retirement communities in Florida.
Improved Safety and Security: These active adult communities are often gated and located in areas with lower crime rates. Visitors require entry approval from residents, and some communities even have on-site security teams to enhance safety.
Abundant Amenities: One of the biggest advantages of living in a 55+ community is access to extensive amenities not usually found in traditional neighborhoods. For example, Brightmore will have a 21,000-square-foot clubhouse with a fitness center, movement rooms and classes, games rooms, and more. And don’t forget the full-time on-site lifestyle director who will plan a full calendar of events and activities year-round!
Low Maintenance: Homes are designed for ease of care, with features like lawn maintenance included in HOA fees.
Strong Community Feel: These communities go to great lengths to foster a sense of belonging. Residents can connect with neighbors of similar ages in a peaceful, familiar environment. Many residents enjoy the opportunity to make new friends and participate in group activities. It’s an easy way to stay connected and avoid isolation, which is an important factor in maintaining a good quality of life..
Cons:
HOA Fees: Most 55+ communities have homeowners associations (HOAs) that collect monthly fees to cover amenities and shared community expenses. It’s important to understand all the HOAs and any other fees and be sure that it is well within budget, especially if on a fixed income.
Limited Age Diversity: In 55+ communities, at least one resident in each household must be 55 or older, with most residents above that age. If you prefer a neighborhood with a more varied age range or have younger family members who want to stay with you long-term, you may want to consider whether this environment suits your preferences.
No On-Site Medical Care: Most 55+ communities do not provide healthcare services or assisted living as part of the HOA fees. However, if they are required later down the line, they can be arranged through third-party services.
Rules and Regulations: HOAs enforce community rules and bylaws that residents must follow. Violations can lead to fines, and these rules can be extensive. This is not exclusive to retirement communities, so check the HOA guidelines before choosing the community you want to move to.
Smaller Home Options: Homes in 55+ communities, such as villas or condos, may be smaller and typically designed for two people. If you’re downsizing from a larger home, you must plan for storage or sort through belongings before moving. However, it’s possible to still find larger home options in some 55+ communities, such as Brightmore.
