The streets come alive, with something happening every weekend, and it’s a great time to enjoy the area before the busy winter visitors arrive. And for anyone visiting during this time, it’s the perfect opportunity to get an authentic taste of the region, the local culture, and the welcoming community vibe that makes Southwest Florida so special.

Venice is packed with things to do all year long, but fall marks the start of festival season, bringing a whole new energy to the area’s already lively calendar.

Sun Fiesta October 16–18, 2026

The iconic Sun Fiesta is Venice’s biggest fall tradition and one of the most beloved community festivals in Southwest Florida. Downtown Venice comes alive with arts and crafts, live entertainment, food and drink vendors, a parade and the famously fun bed races along Venice Avenue.

Sun Fiesta has been part of Venice life since 1973, with the Women’s Sertoma Club of Venice organizing the event since 1994. Admission is free, and proceeds from the festival support local charitable causes and community projects.

It’s a brilliant mix of small-town charm and proper festival atmosphere, but parking fills quickly in downtown Venice. Arrive early, carpool if you can, or be prepared to park a little farther out and walk into Centennial Park.

Haunted 5K, 10K, Half & Full Marathon October 3, 2026

Get your running shoes – and costumes – ready for a spooky start to October. The Haunted Run in Venice includes 5K, 10K and half-marathon distances, making it suitable for everything from a fun seasonal run to a more serious endurance challenge. Runners can expect Halloween-themed race gear, medals and plenty of costumes along the route.

Downtown Venice Halloween Strut October 31, 2026

Downtown Venice gets into the Halloween spirit with the annual Halloween Strut, taking place from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. It’s a fun, family-friendly way for children to show off their costumes and enjoy Halloween in the heart of the city.

The event coincides with the Downtown Venice Art Festival this year, and blocks 100–300 of West Venice Avenue will be closed to vehicles. Give yourself a little extra time to park and walk into the event.

38th Annual Downtown Venice Art Festival October 31 – November 1, 2026

Every fall, the streets of downtown Venice turn into an open-air art gallery. Hosted by Howard Alan Events and Venice MainStreet, this juried festival showcases artists from across the country. You can find everything from fine art and photography to ceramics, jewelry, and home décor.

It’s free to attend and is a great place to start your holiday shopping early or pick up something unique for your home.

Wellen Park Fall Events

There is nearly always something happening in Downtown Wellen, from live music and markets to family activities and one-off community events. However, the regular schedule changes throughout the year, so it’s worth checking the official Wellen Park events calendar before making plans.

You’ll often find live music around Downtown Wellen, along with the Fresh Harvest Farmers Market, night markets, performances at Solis Hall and activities for families, and of course the array of delicious restaurants to sample while you’re in the area. These smaller events make it easy to enjoy the neighborhood even when one of the big seasonal festivals isn’t taking place, and of course there are many amazing restaurants to grab a bite

Oktoberfest at Wellen Park, October 3, 2026

Break out the lederhosen and get ready for an afternoon of Bavarian-inspired fun at Downtown Wellen. The third annual Wellen Park Oktoberfest runs from noon until 6 p.m. and is free to attend.

Expect traditional polka music, bratwurst and other German-inspired food, plenty of beer and classic Oktoberfest competitions, including the always-entertaining stein-hoisting contest. It’s lively, family-friendly and quickly becoming one of Wellen Park’s signature fall events.

Wellen Park Spooktacular Halloween, October 30, 2026

Wellen Park’s Spooktacular brings an evening of family-friendly Halloween fun to Downtown Wellen from 4 to 7 p.m. Kids can dress up and enjoy trick-or-treating around the downtown businesses, with music, entertainment and seasonal activities adding to the atmosphere.

Costumes are strongly encouraged… and not only for the children. Wellen Park’s Halloween celebrations have previously included fun for four-legged family members too (and we gotta say that our pooch Hana had a blast!), so keep an eye on the current event page for the final activity schedule.

Wellen Park Wine Festival November 13–14, 2026

If you love wine, food and good company, the Wellen Park Wine Festival is one of the season’s standout events. It begins on Friday evening with an exclusive five-course dinner and first tasting at Solis Hall, pairing a specially created menu with wines selected for each course.

Saturday brings the main festival program to Downtown Wellen. Beginners can start with Wine Class 101 at Solis Hall before the Grand Tasting opens at noon for VIP guests and 1 p.m. for general admission.

The Grand Tasting features wines from around 40 participating vintners, food from Wellen Park restaurants and live entertainment. General admission includes a souvenir tasting glass, event tote and four food-tasting tickets, while VIP tickets add early entry, premium seating and access to the air-conditioned Solis Hall lounge.

This is a ticketed, 21-and-over event and has sold out in previous years, so booking ahead is highly recommended.

6th Annual Grilled Cheese Festival,  November 21, 2026

Cheese lovers, assemble! The Grilled Cheese Festival returns to CoolToday Park from 11 a.m. for a full day of gloriously melty food, craft beer, live music and family fun.

Local food trucks serve their own takes on the grilled cheese sandwich, ranging from simple classics to fully loaded gourmet creations. There’s also a beer garden, souvenir mugs, live entertainment and games and activities for children.

The festival is free and family-friendly, although you’ll want to bring money for food and drinks. Our advice: come hungry and pace yourself.

Wellen Park Festival of the Arts — November 21–22, 2026

Downtown Wellen becomes an open-air gallery for the Wellen Park Festival of the Arts, taking place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Artists from Florida and across the country will showcase original paintings, sculpture, jewelry, photography, glass, ceramics, fiber art, metalwork, mixed media and woodworking. Visitors can meet the artists, learn about their techniques and browse one-of-a-kind pieces for the home or personal collection.

Admission is free, and the downtown location makes it easy to combine the festival with lunch, drinks or a stroll around the lake. It takes place on the same weekend as the Grilled Cheese Festival at nearby CoolToday Park, so there’s plenty happening around Wellen Park that weekend.

Fall Events in Sarasota

Sarasota Rocktoberfest October 10, 2026

Get ready to raise a glass at Sarasota ROCKtoberfest, returning to J.D. Hamel Park along the Sarasota Bayfront. Unlike the three-day festival held in previous years, the 2026 event takes place on one evening, running from 5 to 11 p.m.

There will be free live music, food and drinks, plus a shopping area filled with local vendors. Admission is free, and you don’t need to purchase separate tickets for food or beverages.

The event is both family-friendly and dog-friendly, making it an easy Saturday evening out with the whole crew. It also supports Destination Downtown Sarasota and the organization’s work promoting local businesses and hosting free community events.

30th Annual Downtown Sarasota Craft Festival October 17–18, 2026

If you love handmade art, local talent, and a relaxed weekend stroll, the Downtown Sarasota Craft Festival is a must-do this fall. Held at 5 Points Park in the heart of downtown, this long-running event fills the streets with creativity, color, and a sense of community charm.

Now celebrating its 29th year, the festival showcases a diverse array of handcrafted treasures, including jewelry, ceramics, photography, paintings, clothing, and home décor. You’ll also find an inviting Green Market, where you can browse artisanal goods, including handmade soaps, gourmet spices, and tropical plants.

Admission is free, and the atmosphere is perfect for a weekend outing, making it easy to explore at your own pace with plenty of cafés, shops, and restaurants nearby. 

Water Lantern Festival October 17,  2026

The Water Lantern Festival at Nathan Benderson Park is one of the most magical fall events in Southwest Florida. Each October, this 600-acre lakeside park transforms into a breathtaking scene as hundreds of hand-decorated glowing lanterns drift across the water, each one carrying personal messages of love, hope, and remembrance.

It’s a beautiful, family-friendly evening filled with food trucks, live music, and a sense of calm community connection. Kids under eight get in free with a paid adult ticket (lanterns sold separately), and tickets often sell out early.

After the lanterns have floated away, keep the night going by grabbing dinner or drinks in town, or heading to PopStroke for a round of mini-golf under the lights.

Gulfcoast Pride Festival, October 24, 2026

Gulfcoast Pride returns to Sarasota’s Rosemary District for an afternoon and evening celebrating the region’s LGBTQ+ community, families, friends and allies.

The free community festival runs from 4 to 8 p.m., bringing together local businesses, artists, nonprofits and community organizations alongside food, vendors and live entertainment. The celebration then continues with a Pride Street Party from 8 to 11 p.m.

Organized by Project Pride SRQ, the event is built around visibility, belonging and connection, with a welcoming atmosphere that is open to everyone.

Repticon Sarasota, October 31, 2026

Calling all reptile fans: Repticon Sarasota slithers back into town for a one-day show at the Sahib Shrine Center. The event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and brings together reptiles, amphibians, exotic pets, specialist equipment and knowledgeable exhibitors from across Florida.

It’s part trade show and part educational outing, with plenty to see even if you’re not planning to take home a new scaly friend. Visitors can learn about different species and browse enclosures, feeders, supplies and reptile-themed merchandise.

Online tickets cost $12 for adults and $6 for children aged 5–12, with children four and under admitted free.

Lights at Spooky Point October 1 – 31, 2026

Selby Gardens’ Historic Spanish Point campus transforms into “Spooky Point” throughout October, with an eerily illuminated trail winding through the gardens.

Along the way, you’ll encounter creative displays and “boo-tanically” themed decorations that are equal parts campy, creepy and cute. It’s a walk-through Halloween experience designed to be fun for all ages rather than a full-on fright night.

There are two timed entry sessions each evening, at 6:30 and 7:45 p.m., and the event ends at 9 p.m. Tickets are required, and parking at Historic Spanish Point is limited, so carpooling is encouraged.

Pro tip: arrive early to explore the gardens in daylight, then stay around after dark to watch the whole place come alive. It’s a little eerie, a little magical, and a whole lot of fun.

Siesta Key Crystal Classic November 13–16, 2026

Fun on the beach isn’t just for summer! Every November, Siesta Beach turns into an outdoor art gallery as sand sculptors from all over the world compete in the Annual Siesta Key Crystal Classic Sand Sculpting Festival. Over four incredible days, 24 artists transform piles of that famous white Siesta Key sand into jaw-dropping masterpieces. Some of the displays are so impressive that they really make you forget they’re made from sand at all.

The festival isn’t just for watching, though. Spectators can join workshops, take sand-sculpting lessons, enjoy live music under the tent, and browse through 75 vendors at the Vendor Village, where they can find a variety of food, drinks, and souvenirs. On Saturday night, stick around for Sculptures After Dark, when the illuminated sculptures glow under colorful lights. It’s pure beachside magic.

If you’re feeling creative yourself, sign up for the Amateur Competition or cheer on contestants during the high-energy Quick Sand Contest. And don’t miss the Awards Ceremony on Sunday at 3 PM, when the top artists are crowned. It’s family-friendly, full of talent, and just the right blend of beach fun and artistic awe.

Sarasota Medieval Fair Weekends, November 7 – December 6, 2026

Step into a world where history and pageantry collide at the Sarasota Medieval Fair, held under the sprawling oaks of the Woods of Mallaranny in Myakka City.

The 21st-anniversary fair runs across five weekends, beginning November 7 and continuing through December 6. Each weekend has a different theme and lineup, so there is something new to see if you decide to visit more than once.

Across the 50-acre fairground, you’ll find full-contact jousting, human combat chess, live music, rides, games and performances spread across 14 stages. More than 140 artisan shops fill the medieval marketplace, while the Children’s Realm offers extra activities for younger visitors.

Newer ticketed add-ons include mead tastings, the Bard’s Brunch, the Feast of the Crown and the Masquerade of Mordred Pendragon. Day tickets and multi-day passes are available, making it easy to choose one themed weekend or return for several.

Whether you’re a history buff, a fantasy fan, or just someone who loves a good themed festival, the Sarasota Medieval Fair is one of fall’s most unforgettable adventures and a highlight of fall events in Sarasota.

Blues at the Park — December 5, 2026

The event formerly known as the Lakewood Ranch Blues Festival has a new name and a new home for 2026. Blues at the Park takes place at G.T. Bray Park in Bradenton, replacing the previous festival held at Bray Park in Bradenton.

The one-day music festival brings live blues to the park on Saturday, December 5. The artist lineup, ticket information and final event schedule are available through the official Blues at the Park website.

Events in Punta Gorda this Fall

Englewood Beach Waterfest October 8 – 11, 2026

Get ready for high-speed thrills as Englewood Beach Waterfest returns for four days of events culminating in the APBA Offshore National Championship Finals.

The powerboat racing brings multiple classes of offshore boats to the Gulf, creating one of the area’s loudest and most exciting fall weekends. Away from the racing, Waterfest traditionally combines beachside entertainment with food, family activities and educational programming focused on marine life and coastal conservation.

The detailed race and festival schedule had not yet been released at the time of writing, so check the official Waterfest website before planning your visit. Importantly, the 2026 races are being promoted as the APBA National Championship Finals rather than the World Championship listed in previous years.

International Culture Fest, October 10, 2026

Take a trip around the world without ever leaving Punta Gorda at the 7th Annual International Culture Fest. This family-friendly celebration, taking place from 12 PM to 6 PM, invites guests to experience the beauty and diversity of cultures from around the globe, all in one vibrant waterfront setting.

You’ll find international cuisine, cultural crafts, and live performances representing traditions from around the world. Kids (and adults!) can join in educational activities and creative workshops while browsing local artisan booths and sampling flavors from around the world.

Presented by the Cultural Heritage Center of Southwest Florida, this event celebrates the region’s rich cultural mix, fostering connection, curiosity, and community joy.

Florida International Air Show — November 7 – 8, 2026

Get ready to look up—the Florida International Air Show returns to Punta Gorda Airport for a full weekend of roaring engines, precision flying and aviation excitement.

The volunteer-run event celebrates aviation past, present and future, combining military and civilian aerial performances with static aircraft and vehicle displays on the ground. Visitors can also explore aviation and space exhibits, meet people from across the industry and enjoy family-friendly activities throughout the weekend.

One of the headline attractions for 2026 is the F-35A Lightning II Demo Team, with additional pilots and performers announced through the official event website and app. The app is also the best place to find the final flying schedule, maps and event updates closer to the weekend.

Several ticket options are available, including general admission and upgraded packages with reserved viewing areas and additional amenities. Check the official Florida International Air Show website when booking, as schedules and performers may change.

Holiday Lighting of the Village November 15, 2025

Fishermen’s Village kicks off the holiday season with its annual Holiday Lighting of the Village, transforming the waterfront destination with festive lights and seasonal atmosphere.

The lighting celebration takes place on November 14, with the Holiday Festival of Lights continuing from November 15 through December 31. It’s a lovely time to wander along the waterfront, browse the shops and enjoy a little Florida-style holiday magic.

The full entertainment schedule and theme had not yet been announced at the time of writing, so check the Fishermen’s Village events calendar before visiting.

Fall Festivals & Events in Fort Myers 

Edison & Ford Fall Festival October 31, 2026

Edison & Ford Winter Estates in Fort Myers hosts this lovely Fall Festival on Saturday, October 31, from 9 AM to 4 PM. The festival is free to attend (although some activities carry a small additional fee), offering a relaxed mix of crafts, music, food, and seasonal fun. For a little extra adventure, you can climb the historic Banyan Tree or pick out a pumpkin. 

Note that admission to the museum buildings, laboratory, and riverside areas of the property requires a separate ticket.

If you’re making a weekend of your travels, this event offers a nice blend of heritage, art, laid-back vibes, and local flavor, especially if you’re looking for something a little more low-key than the big festivals.

BIG ARTS Film Festival November 19–21, 2026

If you’re looking for a cinematic experience that feels both intimate and inspiring, make your way to Sanibel Island for the BIG ARTS Film Festival, a two-day celebration of film combining artistry, conversation, and community in a way only BIG ARTS can deliver.

The 2026 festival welcomes award-winning husband-and-wife filmmakers Justin Schein and Eden Wurmfeld. Their work explores social issues through deeply personal stories, and both filmmakers will be present throughout the festival for talks and post-film Q&As.

The program includes No Impact Man – The Documentary, My So-Called Enemy, Left on Purpose, Crip Camp and Classroom 4. A festival package includes all five screenings, the opening reception, Q&As, a catered dinner, a filmmaker talk and the closing gathering. Individual film tickets can also be booked through the BIG ARTS box office.

Fall Events in Tampa

Oktoberfest Tampa October 9–11, 2026

If you’re in Tampa this fall, don your lederhosen (or comfy jeans) and head downtown for Oktoberfest Tampa, held along the Hillsborough River at Curtis Hixon Waterfront Park. This annual celebration is one of the largest and most festive Oktoberfests in the region, marking its 17th annual appearance in 2026.

Across three days, the festival is packed with authentic German cheer, live music, dancing, and Bavarian food & drink. You’ll find beer tents serving everything from Märzen to hefeweizen, along with traditional German eats like pretzels, sausages, and schnitzel. It’s a full-on German village vibe, right in the heart of Tampa. 

Fun competitions, such as Mr. & Mrs. Oktoberfest and a Beard & Mustache contest, take place during the festival, and stein-hoisting challenges keep things lively and entertaining. Oktoberfest Tampa is a Tampa fall event worth adding to your calendar.

Tampa Pig Jig October 17, 2026

What started as a friendly backyard barbecue competition has grown into a huge annual waterfront fundraiser combining live music, food, cold drinks and a fiercely contested corporate BBQ competition.

The 2026 Tampa Pig Jig takes place at Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park, with Thomas Rhett headlining a lineup that also includes Midland, Kameron Marlowe, Sister Hazel and Cassidy Daniels.

The festival is about much more than a good day out. Tampa Pig Jig raises money for NephCure, supporting research, treatment and the search for a cure for FSGS and nephrotic syndrome. Since the original backyard fundraiser was held in 2011, the event has donated millions and become NephCure’s largest annual donor nationwide.

Ford Taste of Latino Festival, October 11, 2026

Spice up your fall weekend with a trip to Historic Ybor City for the 7th Annual Ford Taste of Latino Festival at Centennial Park. This free, family-friendly celebration takes place from 12 PM to 6 PM. It brings together the best of Latin music, dance, food, and art for an unforgettable afternoon.

You’ll find live music and cultural performances filling the park, along with booths serving up authentic Latin flavors from across the Americas — think empanadas, tacos, pastelitos, and more. Local artists and vendors line the walkways, adding color and creativity to every corner.

Don’t miss the TOP Latino Chef Contest, where talented chefs compete for culinary bragging rights, or the Florida Latino & Latina Lideres Recognition Ceremony, honoring community leaders who make a difference across the state.

Hillsborough County Fair – November 5-15, 2026

Nothing says fall in Florida quite like the Hillsborough County Fair. It’s eleven full days of rides, music, food, and good old-fashioned family fun. Held at the Hillsborough County Fairgrounds, this annual event brings the community together with a little something for everyone.

Expect all your favorite fair attractions, from thrilling rides and delicious food (hello, funnel cakes and corn dogs!) to live shows and local competitions, along with special themed events throughout the week. Highlights include Rodeo Weekend, goat yoga, and interactive agricultural exhibits that celebrate the county’s farming roots.

From livestock shows and arts displays to nightly entertainment and a midway full of lights and laughter, it’s a fall tradition that captures everything we love about small-town fairs with a Florida twist.

Tampa Tattoo Arts Convention November 20 – 22, 2026

If you love art with an edge (or you’re thinking about adding to your own collection), the Tampa Tattoo Arts Convention is the place to be. Hosted by Villain Arts, this massive three-day event brings together hundreds of tattoo artists from around the country to showcase their unique styles, from fine-line and realism to bold traditional work.

The weekend features live entertainment, including sideshow acts, circus performers, and even a contortionist archer (yep, you read that right). You can browse vendors selling art, jewelry, and alternative fashion, or even enter a tattoo contest to show off your ink and compete for a trophy.

You can opt for a single-day pass or a weekend ticket permitting entry over the full three day event. Children under 12 are admitted free, making it a fun (and surprisingly family-friendly) way to explore one of Tampa’s most creative and unconventional events.

Events in St Petersburg this Fall

Clearwater Jazz Holiday October 15-18, 2026

Clearwater Jazz Holiday returns to Coachman Park for four days of jazz, funk, soul, blues and roots music under the Florida sky.

The 2026 lineup includes Chris Botti, Arturo Sandoval, Sheila E. & The E-Train, Larkin Poe, The Wood Brothers, Big Sam’s Funky Nation and plenty more across several stages. Each day has its own musical flavor, stretching from smooth and traditional jazz to funk, Americana and blues.

VIP, reserved and general-admission tickets are available, with lawn chairs and blankets permitted in designated general-admission areas. Gates open at 4 p.m. on Thursday and Friday and 3:30 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

St. Pete Pier Pumpkin Patch & Fall Festival October 9–25, 2026

Fall comes to life along the St. Pete waterfront when the Pier’s Family Park transforms into a seasonal pumpkin patch. From October 9–25, visitors can browse pumpkins, enjoy the fall décor and capture a few seasonal family photos with a distinctly Florida waterfront backdrop.

The larger St. Pete Pier Fall Festival takes place October 10–11. This free community event adds live music, local vendors, food and drinks, a kids’ zone, face painting and family activities.

The festival also includes an Epic Drone Show featuring 1,000 synchronized drones above Tampa Bay. Pumpkin-patch hours vary, so check the current schedule before making the trip.

Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival November 7–8, 2026

Get your appetite ready as the Tarpon Springs Seafood Festival returns to the historic Sponge Docks for two days of fresh food, coastal atmosphere and family fun.

Exotic Race Car Event  (February 21, 2026)

Car enthusiasts and casual spectators alike won’t want to miss this once-in-a-lifetime automotive spectacle as the world-famous 1000 Miglia road race makes its way through Downtown Venice. This legendary 3-day, 1,000-mile journey takes drivers on an incredible route across Florida, from Miami to Naples, Cape Canaveral, West Palm Beach, and back to Miami, with Venice as one of its most exciting stops along the way.

Prepare to be amazed as over 70 vintage race cars and modern supercars cruise into Centennial Park, showcasing a dazzling lineup of rare, historic, and high-performance machines. The event is free and open to the public, making it an unmissable opportunity to witness some of the world’s most stunning and exclusive cars.

The festivities begin at 3 PM, when the Venice AACA Car Club kicks off the celebration with a display of classic and collector vehicles, offering a glimpse into automotive history. Italian Feast and Carnival (February 19-22, 2026)

Venice Sharks Tooth Festival (April 11-12, 2026)

Celebrate Venice’s reputation as the “Shark’s Tooth Capital of the World” at Centennial Park with fossil and beach-inspired merchandise vendors, live music, and delicious food. Although technically, it doesn’t take place until Spring, as it’s scheduled for April, it’s such a great event that we want to ensure you have plenty of notice to bookmark it in your calendar! 

Venice’s beaches are renowned for their abundance of fossilized shark teeth, which attract enthusiasts worldwide. The area’s unique geological history has resulted in a rich deposit of these fossils along its shores. You can check out some great fossil finds on our YouTube video here. 

This weekend-long family-friendly festival is free and packed with fun activities for all ages. Kids can enjoy the interactive shark-themed play area, which includes face painting, shark tooth hunting, and more. 

While leashed dogs are permitted at the festival, it is recommended that pets be left at home due to the expected crowds. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own chairs to enjoy the musical performances comfortably; however, coolers are not allowed.

Wellen Park Events and Festivals

You’re missing out if you haven’t attended an event at Wellen Park yet! It’s not just a place to live—it’s a whole lifestyle. The downtown area is the heart of it all, with live music, markets, and fun events happening all the time. The downtown area is regularly alive with the Friday Night Concert Series, the ever-popular Wellen Night Market, and rotating live performances that turn an ordinary evening into a reason to hang out a little longer. On top of that, there are ongoing community offerings like toddler groups, theatre workshops, line dancing classes and other casual gatherings that make it feel easy to plug in whether you live nearby or are just visiting from a bit farther afield.

Luminescence Festival  (January 9, 2026)

This is one of those events that feels genuinely magical without trying too hard. Think glowing installations, artful lighting, and an evening atmosphere that’s perfect for wandering with friends or family. Set in Wellen Park’s town center, it’s a brand new event for the cooler winter months and is designed to be immersive rather than rushed. It runs from 5pm  onwards and is free to attend. The luminary bags are on a first come first served basis though so get there early to make sure you don’t miss out. Participants can personalize their luminary bags with New Year wishes or messages of rememberance, which adds a special intimate vibe to the event. Take part in the parade and release and then enjoy the live music, art, and fireworks.

Wellen Night Market  (2nd Thursday of every month)

If you love browsing handmade goods with a drink in hand, the Wellen Night Market is an easy favorite. Local makers, small businesses, and food vendors line the streets, often with live music adding to the vibe. It’s casual, social, and very much a “let’s just stroll and see what we find” kind of evening. These markets are usually free to attend, making them a low-key way to experience the community while supporting local creatives.

Wellen Park Fine Arts Festival (February 15th, 2026)

The Wellen Park Fine Arts Festival draws artists from across the region and turns the downtown area into an open-air gallery. You’ll find everything from paintings and photography to sculpture and functional art, all set against Wellen Park’s waterfront backdrop. Sarasota Winefest (March 21, 2026)

Mark your calendar for the Sarasota Wine Festival on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Selby Five Points Park in Downtown Sarasota! Enjoy an unforgettable evening filled with world-class wines, craft cocktails, gourmet food trucks, live music, and unique lifestyle vendors.

Tickets are sold individually for each event so that you can curate your perfect jazz experience. Food and drinks will be available at all venues.

St Petersburg Firestone Grand Prix (Feb 27 – March 1 2026)

The Firestone Grand Prix of St. Petersburg, presented by RP Funding, will ignite the streets of downtown St. Petersburg from February 27 to March 1, 2026. This thrilling event features a 1.8-mile, 14-turn temporary circuit that winds through iconic landmarks such as Pioneer Park, the Duke Energy Center for the Arts, and The Dalí Museum. It even incorporates sections of the Albert Whitted Airport runway, all against the stunning backdrop of Tampa Bay.

Beyond the high-speed racing action, attendees can look forward to a festival-like atmosphere featuring speed zones, an IndyCar Series Fan Village, beer gardens, driver autograph sessions, and interactive games and exhibits. 

Parking is available at several downtown garages, including the SouthCore Garage, Sundial Garage, and the University of South Florida (USF) Garage. Additional parking can be found at Tropicana Field, with a free shuttle service running to and from the race venue. Accessible parking is available on a first-come, first-served basis, and fans are encouraged to use public transportation or ride-sharing services for easier access.

Florida Strawberry Festival (February 26 – March 8, 2026)

The Florida Strawberry Festival has been a cherished tradition since 1930, celebrating its 91st annual event in 2026. It’s one of the most popular events in the state, attracting over 600,000 visitors each year.  This annual celebration honors the region’s rich strawberry harvest with entertainment, agriculture, and family-friendly activities. It runs from February 26 to March 8, 2026, in Plant City, Florida.

So if the Gulf is rough with waves, you might go to the quieter Intracoastal side where it could be flat and calm!

Rentals and tours are available nearby, making it easy to get out on the water even if you don’t have your own equipment. For convenience, there is a kayak launch right at the main parking lot, so you only have to walk a few feet from your car to put in! And there are many areas throughout the park where you can paddle and then just pull up on the sand to relax for the day. In fact, boaters come from all over the area to enjoy the Intracoastal waters and park their boats for the day to hop off and explore at the park!

Hiking the Trails

The park features a 1.3-mile trail that leads you through natural habitats such as coastal hammocks and beach dunes. As you hike, you may encounter a variety of native plants and animals. The trail is well-marked and suitable for most fitness levels. Keep in mind that the sand is quite soft, which can make the trek tiring on the legs! And during peak times of the day in summer, the sand can get quite hot on your feet!

However, if you cut over to the beach areas you can walk on harder, wet sand which is much easier and cooler on your feet!

Fishing Opportunities

For anglers, the park provides excellent fishing spots. You can fish from the shore or venture out into the waters of the Gulf and Lemon Bay. Common catches include snook, redfish, and sea trout. Don’t forget your fishing license (which you can get here) and gear!

Wildlife Observation

Stump Pass State Park is a haven for wildlife observation. You can spot a variety of birds, including ospreys and pelicans. You’ll aalso find West Indian manatees, gopher tortoises, snowy egrets, least terns and magnificent frigate birds. During certain times of the year, you might even witness sea turtles nesting on the beaches. Bring your binoculars for a close-up view. There are also a number of tour operators near the park where you can sign up for dolphin tours and other types of wildlife watching around the park area. Ranger-led nature hikes are available in the winter.

There are also pavilions that can be reserved for larger gatherings. These pavilions come with additional seating and nearby trash disposal, making clean-up easy.

The park boasts clean and accessible restrooms. These facilities are strategically located near the picnic areas and parking spaces, ensuring that you are never too far from a restroom.

The restrooms are ADA-compliant, offering wheelchair access and spacious stalls. Hygiene is a priority, with frequent cleaning and restocking of supplies.

Parking Information

At Stump Pass parking options are limited. Close to the main entrance is a well-marked parking lot which is easy to navigate. However, it is fairly small and typically fills up fast! If Stump Pass parking lot is full you can park down the road at Englewood Beach and call Stumpy’s for a ride down to Stump Pass (a golf cart service that runs on tips). However, RV parking at Stump Pass is challenging because it is a small lot without much space. We recommend you park RVs down at Englewood Beach.

Stump Pass Beach State Park is open year-round, giving you ample opportunity to enjoy its natural beauty. The park operates daily from 8 a.m. until sunset. Holidays might affect these hours, so always check ahead before planning your visit. The facilities, including restrooms, are usually well-maintained, ensuring your visit is comfortable and enjoyable. Your pet is welcome – but ONLY on the main trail and around the main facilities. You cannot bring them on the beach. And they must be kept on a leash.

Entrance Fees and Passes

Visiting Stump Pass Beach State Park is affordable. The entrance fee is $3 for vehicles with up to eight people. If you’re arriving solo or on foot, expect to pay $2. Annual Florida State Park passes are also accepted here, which can be a great option if you’re a frequent visitor. [can you confirm this price, I think it’s right last time I checked]

Consider purchasing a family annual pass if you plan on multiple visits, as it offers unlimited access to all Florida State Parks. You can buy your pass online or at the park entrance. Note that fees are subject to change, so verify current rates before your trip.

We’ve visited all of these Venice Florida dog parks with our beloved Hana (Labrador). We enjoy visiting all these parks as humans, and Hana has given her paw of approval too!

A dog park is a dedicated open space that allows dogs to play, exercise, and socialize off-leash in a controlled environment (typically with a fence) under the supervision of their owners. They are great spaces where dogs can run free to explore safely, make friends and play, and the owners can relax and even socialize too.

Beyond the safety aspect, many dog parks will have amenities such as water (super important here in Florida), perhaps some shady areas, benches for owners and poop-disposal stations. We have traveled a lot with our dog, Hana. And whenever we make a stop whether it’s for a vacation or just a stopover, we often will look for the nearest and best dog park where she can stretch her legs and have some fun too.

We’ve found some really great dog parks around the country and around Florida too. Luckily for us, after making our home here in Venice years ago, we’ve been able to find some really great dog parks in Venice, FL and the nearby area that we really enjoy visiting.

So to make it easy for you, we’ve rounded up a list of our favorite dog parks around Venice and the Sarasota areas, where pet owners can enjoy quality time with their furry friends. These parks offer amenities ranging from off-leash play areas to trails and even beach access, ensuring a fun outing for everyone!

1. Woodmere Dog Park Venice FL

Location: 3951 Woodmere Park Blvd, Venice, FL 34293

Woodmere Dog Park is our go-to dog park here in Venice. It’s conveniently located, in fact, we often stop by for a visit when we are out around town running errands. It’s easy to get in and out, good parking, and it’s just a lovely park in general.

The shade is awesome here, with beautiful large trees and some grassy spots. There are nice benches and even a covered area for sitting. Plenty of water is available for the dogs, and even a fun water spout which Hana loves to play with!

One of our favorite things about this park is that there is a sort of trail that goes around the perimeter. So we use it as our time to get our steps in for the day. Josh and I walk around and talk, take deep breaths of fresh air, and it kinda feels like a small nature trail. And Hana can run off and play and return to us at any time (although, being the loyal girl she is she pretty much stays right next to us the whole time!).

Another nice perk to this park is that there are often toys and tennis balls provided, either by volunteers or the local parks department. One visit we stumbled across a giant pile of fresh new tennis balls ready to be slobbered on!

2. Brohard Paw Park And Dog Beach

Location: 1600 Harbor Dr. S, Venice, FL 34285

This is another one of our favorite and most visited dog parks in Venice. The Brohard Paw Park is actually 2 parks in one. There is a fenced area near the parking lot (for both large and small dogs) where dogs can run and place safely. There are benches, a covered area, and a water and washing station.

But the best thing about this park is that if you go out the back of the fenced dog park area, there is a fenced pathway that leads all the way to a dog-friendly section of the beach alongside the Gulf of Mexico! This is the Brohard dog beach.

The Brohard Dog Beach is the ONLY off-leash dog-friendly beach in the Sarasota area! Here dogs can frolic in the ocean and play in the sand. In fact, this is Hana’s “Happy Place” because she is a beach girl and would relax here all day long if she could. And when you leave the beach, it’s nice to have the dog wash area back in the fenced park before you get to your car so you can rinse the sand and salt water off your pup.

Another perk of this beach area is that it is actually a very nice beach that is swimmable! So you really can have a proper beach day yourself alongside your fur-baby.

3. Fetch Dog Park at Wellen Park

Location: Wellen Park Blvd (near Downtown Wellen), Venice, FL

4. Blue Heron Dog Park Near Wellen Park

Location: 11755 Blue Heron Circle, Venice, FL 34293

As you may know by now, we are out in Wellen Park frequently helping our real estate clients find homes in the different communities out here. And we also visit the downtown Wellen Park area for fun, such as enjoying the restaurants and farmers market on the weekends. So sometimes Hana is with us in the car.

When she’s getting a little restless or we want her to have some fun too, we’ll make a stop over at the Blue Heron Dog park. Located off River Road, this park is actually connected by walking trails to a couple of the Wellen Park communities (Oasis and Renaissance).

It’s a beautiful park that Hana (and the two of us) really love! There are separate areas for small and large dogs, really nice grass, a bit of shade and some benches. It’s not super large, but it’s enough. There is also water available and before or after running in the park there are some nice walking trails that you can enjoy on a nice day.

Oh, and there is a small playground adjacent to the dog park so your two-legged kiddos can have some fun too.

Ann & Chuck Dever Regional Park In Englewood

Location: 6791 San Casa Dr., Englewood, FL 34224

If you happen to be down in the Englewood area just south of Venice and Wellen Park, then you may want to make a stop off at this dog park. It’s HUGE! The Ann and Chuck Dever dog park is a fantastic spot to take your pup, especially if they enjoy running!

We stumbled across this park a few years ago because we were running errands for some real estate listings in the Englewood area and visiting a client. Hana was in the car with us and our clients suggested this park because it was amazing to run around.

And they were right!

This dog park is a paradise for dogs who want large, open space to run fast or for long distances. There is a small dog area too, but the large dog area is massive. The dog park is a part of a larger park complex (it’s huge really) with a number of sports fields, courts, trails and picnic areas.

Bay Street Dog Park Osprey, FL

Location: 300 East Bay St, Osprey, FL 34229

When we are looking to change up the scenery or when we are traveling highway 41 between Venice and Sarasota, we often make a stop at the Bay Street Dog Park in Osprey, FL. It’s conveniently located only a block off of Tamiami and it’s a really nice and well-maintained dog park. There is a small and large dog fenced area, as well as drinking water and even some fun agility items for the dogs to play on or jump around.

It’s not a large park, but it really is very nice. And the trees are huge and beautiful, providing lots of nice shade. It really is a tranquil environment and a pleasant park to visit.

Gillespie Dog Park In Sarasota

Location: 710 N Osprey Ave, Sarasota, FL 34236

In Sarasota, Gillespie Dog Park is a great urban space for dogs to enjoy off-leash play with two separate fenced areas. It’s equipped with a covered seating area for owners and water stations to keep dogs hydrated.

We’ve made a stop by this park a couple of times when we were up in downtown Sarasota running errands or visiting the weekend Sarasota Farmers Market (which is huge!). This dog park is conveniently located near downtown, so we can easily pop over and let Hana run free for a bit, make some friends and have some fun.

17Th Street Dog Park In Sarasota

Location: 4570 17th St, Sarasota, FL 34235

If you happen to be up in Sarasota, another super popular dog park is the 17th street dog park. This is actually one of the most beloved dog parks in Sarasota. It’s a part of a larger public park area with sports fields, bt the dog park area is also quite huge! It is a well-loved dog park in Sarasota that provides a serene environment, ideal for both playful pups and socializing with fellow dog owners.

There is a large and small dog area, and wide open space for the dogs to run and play. There is a bit of shade and some benches, and of course water for the dogs to stay hydrated.

We actually make it a point to visit this Sarasota dog park whenever we take trips up to drop off of pick up friends / family (or each other) at the Sarasota Airport. Hana likes to go on this car rides, so this makes for a fun activity. And sometimes if I’m heading to the airport to pick someone up and perhaps I’m a little early, we’ll stop at the dog park until they land. Then we hop in the car to go fetch them.

Tips For Bringing Your Pet To The Dog Park

For seasoned dog owners, you may already know some of these tips for bringing your dog to the dog park. However, for newbies or if you are new to Florida, here are a few tips to be prepared and to keep your dog safe and more importantly, cool and hydrated in these dog parks!

Supplies to Bring:

• Water – super important in Florida: Always bring fresh water and a bowl. Even though most of these parks have water provided, it’s always good to have some on hand just in case. It gets so hot here in the summer, you never want your pup to get dehydrated or overheat.
• Leash: Even in off-leash parks, have a leash on hand.
• Waste bags: Always pick up after our pets. Again, just in case they run out at the park.

The Basics – Health and Park Etiquette:

• Always keep our pets up-to-date on vaccinations.
• Ensure they have flea and tick prevention.
• Pets should be in good health to avoid spreading illnesses.
• Understand and follow the park’s rules.
• Keep an eye on our pets at all times (we often see pets run off while their owners are talking, and then they take a poo and no one saw it!)
• Always, always pick up after your pet!
• Be prepared to intervene if play becomes too rough.

Safety First:

• Remove our pets’ leashes upon entering the off-leash area to prevent tangling.
• Avoid bringing food to the park to prevent conflicts among dogs.
• Monitor interactions with other dogs, especially when they are new to each other.

So, they did away with the pressures that come with playing a regular course and even the gimmicks of regular miniature golf and modern putting courses. Instead, what you get here is a putting experience that feels like the real deal, because it is. Also, because it is so much fun, it’s a wonderful way to introduce youngsters and kids to golf.

Is PopStroke Owned by Tiger Woods?

Built by Tiger Woods and his TGR Design Team, you can choose from 2 beautiful rolling courses – Tiger Red course, or Tiger Black.  With steep hills, hidden breaks, bunkers, and rough – but with synthetic turf. It’s just like real golf course, just miniature-sized.

PopStroke locations are popping up all across the country already! However, PopStroke Sarasota was the very first location to be built and to open to the public!

They have a variety of putters to choose from, but you are also allowed to bring your own! (for the more serious golfers, this is definitely a plus!).

PopStroke Sarasota Courses: Tiger Red & Tiger Black

Honestly, we found the PopStroke courses in Sarasota to be quite beautifully designed! The vibrant colors and steep rolling hills created a vivid contrast. Combine that with the tropical landscaping and it really is visually stunning. Both putting courses have their fair share of bunkers, fairways, roughs, and of course, synthetic turf to provide the feel of a regular golf course.

The Tiger Black: Of the two, the Tiger Black Course is easier to get through as it stretches across relatively flat ground. Moreover, the contours are softened, which makes putting easier while helping to keep the ball in. Also, the flat topography makes the Tiger Black a wheelchair-friendly course.

The Tiger Red: If you are looking for a challenge go for Tiger Red. As you may have guessed, the holes are placed uphill and downhill with roughs and bunkers in between. Plus, the slopes are steep and other contour elements and multiple tiers have been included with the specific aim to make it harder to get through this course. So, you are less likely to get a hole-in-one on the Tiger Red. However, the thrill of playing this course is what makes you savor the experience.

How Long Does it Take to Play the PopStroke Putting Courses in Sarasota?

Now, depending on your putting skill, it can take an hour or a bit longer to get through the 18 holes of the Tiger Black. Traversing the Tiger Red can take about an hour and a half even if you have good putting skills and about two hours if your putting needs some work.

The best part is that you can stop at any time for a quick bite or drink or just to cool off with a trip to the rooftop bar. Cold towels and misting stations do help with the heat even when it’s hot outside.

While golf is the central theme at PopStroke, this venue is designed in every way to be a family entertainment facility. So, there is so much more to enjoy than just putt-putt.

Is Popstroke good for kids?

For all sports fans: Of course, you can’t have a sports-themed or sporting venue of any kind without the quintessential big-screen TVs. PopStroke has quite a few of those in the bar as well as the restaurant, so no matter where you are, you can watch your favorite teams/players in action.

For when you need more than just putting action: At the two courses, you will only need your putter and if you don’t own one, don’t worry, they have quite a few of them to go around.

Are reservations required at PopStroke Sarasota?

Currently, the PopStroke location in Sarasota, Florida does NOT take reservations. It’s first-come-first-served.

The hours of operation are daily from 9 am until midnight. And keep in mind that after dark, the music pumps up a little louder and things get a bit more exciting.

2. Venice

This is especially true during the winter months when manatees move inland where the water is warmer. You can view manatees in their natural environment all around Florida. In fact, we just saw a manatee a few days ago just a few blocks from our home while walking our dog! So if you’re on a mission to view manatees in the wild in Florida, keep reading to find out some of the top places we recommend you visit – where you are sure to spot one of these beautiful, gentle creatures.

But First, What Are Manatees?

Manatees are gentle and peaceful creatures that inhabit the shallow coastal waters of Florida. These large aquatic mammals can grow up to 13 feet in length and weigh up to 1,300 pounds! They have thick gray skin covered with pale spots and whiskers on their snouts. Their diet consists mainly of vegetation, like seagrasses, that are found in the waterways and coasts they inhabit.  They are slow-moving, curious animals and can often be seen by boats or kayaks drifting along with the current.

Is a Sea Cow the same as a Manatee?

Many people affectionately refer to manatees as sea cows. And while there are some similarities, technically a sea cow is not the same as a manatee. Sea cows are an entirely different species of aquatic mammal, although they are related to manatees. Sea cows are larger than manatees and have a more rounded body shape compared to the cylindrical-shaped body of a manatee.

Also, unlike manatees, sea cows do not have long whiskers on their snouts. They are found in the open ocean rather than estuaries or coasts like manatees are, and they feed mainly on sponges and other soft-bodied invertebrates instead of vegetation.

What Do Manatees Eat?

Manatees are herbivorous, which means they feed mainly on aquatic vegetation. They consume an average of 10-15% of their body weight in plants per day. Given the fact that they can weigh up to 1300 pounds, that’s a lot of greens to eat in a single day! This diet consists of seagrass, freshwater and marine algae, and even the occasional fruit or root.

Because manatees love to eat seagrasses and also freshwater vegetation, Florida with its many miles of waterways around the state offers abundant food to nourish these large creatures.

Where Do Manatees Live?

Manatees live in shallow, slow-moving waters of the coastal areas along the Atlantic and Gulf coasts of Florida. They can also be found in estuaries, bays, rivers, and lagoons throughout the state in both fresh and brackish waters. Most coastal communities around Florida, including us here in the Venice & Sarasota area, are used to seeing manatees in the bays and Intracoastal waterways.

But they can also be found inland as well since manatees can travel to interior freshwater areas and springs. This is why places like Blue Springs State Park northeast of Orlando are also popular places to see manatees.

Tips for Spotting Manatees in the Wild

When out on the water, look for telltale signs of manatees such as a flat, oval-shaped wake or disturbance on the surface. Manatees also have unique noise patterns that can be heard underwater—listen for a series of clicks and chirps coming from the direction of any disturbances you spot on the surface.

You also might hear a noise if they come up to the surface to breathe. In fact, that’s how we heard a manatee just the other day when we were walking our dog in Shamrock Park here in South Venice. We heard a faint noise, almost like the blowhole of a dolphin, and we looked out and saw a disturbance in the water — with a round nose sticking out! We knew the shape of that snout!

Finally, if you’re having trouble finding manatees, ask a local guide or an experienced boat captain where they are most likely to be seen in your area.  By following these tips, you should be able to locate and observe manatees in their natural habitat at one of Florida’s beautiful wildlife refuges or state parks.

So Where is the Best Place to See Manatees in Florida?

While you can spot manatees in captivity in different aquariums (including the Mote in Sarasota, among others), it’s most rewarding to see manatees out in their natural habitat.

One of the best, and most popular places to see manatees in Florida is in Crystal River, Florida. This area is just an hour or so north of the Tampa area along the Gulf Coast. It offers easy access and plenty of opportunities for close encounters with manatees.

You can technically see manatees in many waterways around Crystal River town, but one of the most popular places in town to visit is Three Sisters Springs with their boardwalks and other opportunities to explore on land or on water. The warm, clear waters here in the Crystal River area are an ideal habitat for them and they can often be seen grazing in the seagrass beds.

Another extremely popular place to see manatees are just south of Crystal River, in Homosassa Springs. There is a state park here with a wonderful viewing area (even an underground section). You can also walk around the park to enjoy other animals too. Adjacent to the park are a number of waterways where people can take boat or kayak tours to see the manatees and even go snorkeling with them!

However, since manatees are an endangered species, it is important to remember to respect their space when viewing them in their natural habitat.

The Apollo Beach Manatee Viewing Center

The Apollo Beach Manatee Viewing Center is an area along Tampa Bay (just south of the city) that serves as a sanctuary for manatees. This is a popular tourist attraction that allows visitors to observe these creatures in their natural habitat from an observation tower and boardwalk, as well as learn more about this species through educational programs.

One of the reasons manatees come here is that a nearby power plant circulates cool water from Tampa Bay and then puts warm water back into the bay — and the manatees just LOVE this warm water. Especially during the winter months, manatees flock here! As a result, they’ve built up the area with viewing platforms and other amenities for visitors to enjoy their time exploring the area and watching the manatees.

Seeing Manatees in Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge

As we mentioned, the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge is the most popular spot to observe manatees in Florida. It offers visitors several access points along the river where they can safely view manatees in their natural habitat. The warm waters of the springs in this area draw large numbers of manatees each winter when temperatures dip slightly and provide a perfect opportunity for close encounters with these gentle giants.

Seeing Manatees at Three Sisters Springs in Crystal River

Three Sisters Springs near Crystal River is a great spot to observe manatees as well. The shallow, clear waters provide excellent visibility for viewing these amazing creatures up close. Manatees can often be seen in the warm springs year-round, but winter months are especially popular when they flock to the area in large numbers seeking shelter from colder waters elsewhere. You can also enjoy the boardwalk or take water tours too. Be sure to check online about booking tickets here in advance.

Seeing Manatees in Homosassa Springs

Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park is another popular spot to see manatees in their natural habitat. This is actually one of our favorite parks that we’ve visited to see manatees! The park offers several boardwalks and observation decks with stunning views of the crystal-clear springs where up to 600 manatees can be seen during winter months.

Visitors can also take guided boat tours through the park’s winding waterways, offering an unparalleled opportunity for a close encounter with these gentle giants. They also have a really cool underwater viewing area near the spring’s source. And during the winter months, you can see so many manatees in here!

The area just outside the state park is popular too for manatee-viewers. You can rent a boat / kayak / paddle board or take some boat tours to explore the waterways and watch the manatees even more. And if you are lucky and the weather is nice, you might even be able to hop in the water and swim with them!

Manatee Springs State Park Near Chiefland

Manatee Springs State Park near Chiefland is another popular spot to observe manatees in Florida. This park offers visitors the chance to view these majestic creatures up close from boardwalks and observation decks while they feed on the seagrass in the shallow depths of the springs. The crystal-clear waters make this a great spot for snorkeling, and during the winter especially, you are almost guaranteed to see manatees here!

Seeing Manatees in Blue Spring State Park in Orange City

Blue Spring State Park in Orange City is one of the top spots in Florida to observe manatees in their natural habitat. In fact, this is an extremely popular state park and it also has a great campground if you want to stay here and see the manatees on multiple days. The clear waters of the spring and its surrounding park are perfect for viewing manatees up close, and visitors can even take a leisurely boat tour through the marshes and see them feeding on the seagrass beneath the surface.

In fact, my parents have done the boat ride many times — it is one of their absolute favorite things to do in the area and they are always raving about it!

Seeing Manatees in Sebastian Inlet State Park near Melbourne

Sebastian Inlet State Park near Melbourne is another great spot to observe manatees in their natural habitat. The park offers loads of activities for visitors, from surfing, swimming, snorkeling, paddling and more. And of course, there is a lot of great wildlife viewing here including sea turtles as well as manatees. The Bayside Marina and docks are great places to view these different forms of wildlife, including manatees who can be spotted year-round.

Where Can I Swim With the Manatees in Florida?

It is possible for you to be out enjoying yourself swimming or paddling in the waterways and then happen to come up on a manatee naturally. However, there are some official places where swimming with manatees in Florida is specifically allowed, including areas where the animals have been habituated to human presence.

Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge, Manatee Springs State Park, and Three Sisters Springs are three of the most popular destinations for swimming with manatees in Florida. We’ve also seen people swimming with manatees in the waterways just adjacent to Homosassa Springs State park too.

Be sure to follow all rules and regulations when visiting these locations, as they are set up specifically to protect the manatees. Swimming with manatees can be an incredible experience, so make sure you respect their space and enjoy your time in their natural habitat!

When is The Best Time to See Manatees?

While you can technically see manatees any time of the year in Florida, the best time when you are most likely to see manatees in Florida is from mid-November through March when the water temperature drops. This causes the manatees to migrate from their summering grounds along the coastlines and move inland to seek out warmer waters.

They will congregate in places like Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge or Manatee Springs State Park. During this time, there can be a lot of manatees in a smaller area, so visitors can get up close and personal with the manatees by snorkeling, kayaking, canoeing, or taking a guided tour.

For example, they say that in Homosassa Springs they can have up to 600 manatees in their main spring area!

Other Interesting (and Weird) Facts About Manatees

When Are Manatees Most Active?

Manatees are most active in the morning and late afternoon. This is when they come to the surface of the water to feed, rest, and socialize with other manatees. They can also be seen playing, nursing their young, and rubbing against objects in their environment. Although, we have seen manatees at all times of the day. So even though they might be most active during these times, you don’t have to plan your whole trip around a specific time.

I Hear That Manatees Fart, Is That True?

Manatees are known to be particularly gassy creatures. They release methane and other gases through their intestines and spouting activity, which can sometimes sound like a loud fart! This behavior is perfectly natural for these curious marine mammals, so don’t be alarmed if you happen to hear it during your manatee encounter.

Do Manatees Ever Leave the Water?

Manatees live their entire lives in the water, like a fish or whale. They just float around, dive for food, and swim about – usually eating because they have to consume so much vegetation everyday to support their large size.

How Long Can Manatees Hold Their Breath?

Since manatees don’t leave the water, they have to be able to dive down to get food or to stay safe. It is possible for manatees to hold their breath for as long as 20 minutes straight! But typically, they will go underwater and hold their breath for around 5 minutes or so. However, it really depends on the activity level of each specific manatee and what they are doing. If they come up for air more often, it can actually take more energy.

Are Manatees Endangered?

Yes, manatees are an endangered species. Manatees have been heavily impacted by human activities such as boating accidents, habitat destruction and pollution. While their numbers are increasing in some areas, they remain vulnerable to further decline due to these threats. You will see signs all across Florida reminding you to be mindful of the manatees in the area.

What Can I Do To Help Protect Manatees?

There are many things you can do to help protect manatees from the threats they face. If you are boating, PLEASE adhere to the speed limits and no wake zones! Many times this isn’t just for personal safety, but for the safety of the manatees who are likely in those shallow waters too. Because they float up on top of the water, they are easily hurt and killed by propellers!

Also, if you’re viewing manatees in their natural habitat, be sure to stay at least 50 feet away from them, as any closer could disturb their activities.

Additionally, you can support conservation efforts by joining a local volunteer organization or contributing to manatee research and protection funds. Finally, you can spread awareness about manatees and encourage others to respect their habitats whenever possible. By taking these steps, we can ensure that these beautiful animals can continue to thrive in our environment for years to come.

If you’re looking to learn more about manatees, there are plenty of great resources available. The Save the Manatee Club is an excellent organization dedicated to protecting and conserving manatees, and they have a wealth of information on their website. Additionally, there are a number of books, documentaries and articles that provide further insight into the lives of these gentle giants.

Finally, you can visit one of Florida’s wildlife sanctuaries or state parks (mentioned above) to see manatees up close and learn more about them from experienced guides or naturalists. By educating yourself about manatees and seeing them for yourself, you’ll be better equipped to help protect them in the wild.

What Is a 55+ Community? (Age-Restricted)

In Florida, a 55+ community is an age-restricted housing community for aging adults looking for a comfortable and convenient living space. Roughly 80% of units throughout the community are occupied by someone at least 55 years old, if not older. Younger people may occupy the remaining 20%, but that isn’t always the case. While someone younger than 55 can live in one of these communities, most residents are aging adults who’ve chosen the community for various reasons, such as affordability, access to convenient amenities, and an added level of safety and security.

Types of 55 and Over Communities in Florida

Not all 55+ communities offer the same amenities and experiences as others. These are a few different types of aging adult communities available to the public throughout Florida. Keep in mind that these are all independent living communities, and are not assisted-living facilities. 

Retirement Communities

While aging adults who still work can live in a retirement community, these communities are best suited for those who’ve retired and no longer have to worry about getting up and leaving for work each day. Most retirement communities throughout Florida will offer different recreational activities to keep the aging adults active and busy, especially now that they have more time on their hands because they’re no longer working. In these communities, the adults can take care of themselves and are in relatively good shape.

Luxury Aging Adult Communities

Luxury aging communities are available for those who want a more elegant and sophisticated option. It will undoubtedly cost more to live in one of these communities. However, the luxury adult living communities tend to have much to offer, including spacious golf courses, on-site restaurants, swimming pools, fitness centers, walking trails, and pre-planned activities to keep the adults entertained. In addition, these luxury communities may provide freshly prepared meals to residents throughout the day so that the residents won’t have to worry about cooking anything if they don’t want to.

Budget-Friendly Adult Communities

Contrary to what some believe, you don’t have to be wealthy to take advantage of the opportunity to live in a 55+ community. Many budget-friendly options are available for those wanting a safe and comfortable space to live while surrounded by people within the same age group. Although the budget-friendly options may not offer as many amenities as the luxury living spaces, they still provide a certain level of convenience, with residents having access to a clean and spacious environment with the basics.

The Features and Benefits of Living in a 55+ Community

There is a lot to love about living in a 55+ community. However, these are only some of the many benefits residents can enjoy when joining one of these adult living communities:

• Experience fun opportunities to socialize with people within the same age group
• Become a member of a welcoming and supportive community of people who care for one another and take pride in living in a clean, safe environment
• Choose from different floor plans based on your needs and the number of people who will live with you in the home
• You don’t necessarily need to be retired to enjoy living in these supportive adult communities
• Have access to convenient amenities that will keep you active and entertained throughout the years
• Feel safer because of the added security provided within these communities

And, if you choose one of the luxury adult living communities, you can enjoy all the additional benefits of luxury living. Luxury or not, many of the 55+ communities will provide amenities for residents, such as fitness centers, swimming pools, and safe hiking trails for outdoor exercise.

The Cons of 55+ Communities

While there are advantages of living in 55+ communities, some of the cons to consider before you officially make your move include:

• The initial cost of moving into some of these communities is quite high, so not everyone can afford to relocate
• Some of the 55+ communities have rules that residents must follow. While this isn’t always a problem, not everyone likes the idea of following a lengthy list of rules
• The living space in some communities may be smaller than the home an individual lived in before choosing to move to the new community. Although this isn’t an issue for those looking to downsize and who can get used to it.

If you’re considering moving to a 55+ community, you must consider the pros and cons before making such a big decision. It’s also beneficial to review any rules these different communities have before choosing the right one.

Can Friends and Family Visit and Stay If They’re Not 55+?

One of the most significant concerns adults have when considering moving into adult living communities explicitly available for those at least 55 years old or older is not being able to have younger visitors stay with them. If this concerns you, you’re probably asking questions such as, “What if I want to have my children visit me? What if I want my grandchildren to stay with me for a bit? Will that be allowed?”

And the answer is YES!

While these adult living communities exist for the primary purpose of providing a safe and enjoyable living space for aging adults, the 80/20 rule is a federal law in place that makes it possible for older adults to have younger people stay with them. For example, any community providing housing for older adults will need to have 80% of the units occupied by at least one person at least 55 years old, if not older. However, the other 20% may be occupied by younger individuals.

Because of this rule, you can have your loved ones stay with you, temporarily or permanently, as long as there is enough space inside the home for each occupant. Knowing this may give you peace of mind that choosing to move to a 55+ community is in your best interest.

Are Active Adult Communities the Same as 55+ Communities?

Although there are some minor differences between an active adult community and a 55+ community, they also have much in common. Most of these communities have clubhouses for community events and activities and offer additional amenities that residents can participate in for free, such as golfing and swimming.  In general, active adult communities tend to have a lot more in the way of activities and events and are very similar to other major resort-style communities in Florida. It’s just that they have an age restriction.

Active adult communities and 55+ communities are sometimes different. For example, some 55+ communities may provide meals for residents so that they don’t have to make breakfast, lunch, or dinner, but this is a rare practice in active adult communities. Because these individuals are considered “active,” they are responsible for preparing their meals, which can be done from the comfort of their homes within the community.

55+ Communities vs. Assisted-Living Facilities

Just because a community is 55+ does not mean it is an assisted living facility, although some 55+ communities will have some services to support their residents. In most assisted living facilities there will be meal services as well as healthcare facilities as well as staff who can assist during the case of an emergency. There are some 55+ communities that may offer this type of support, but it’s typically on a much smaller scale. Therefore, some 55+ communities may not the ideal place for an aging adult who may need a bit more assistance. In that case, the adult should move into an assisted living facility where they can receive help on demand as often as they need it.

Before you make a move to a 55+ community, consider your wants and needs and do your research on the different communities available for aging adults. You want to choose the most suitable option based on the amenities that are most important to you.

Why You Might Want (Or Not Want) to Live in a 55+ Community

If you love the idea of having quick and easy access to amenities that will keep you entertained and enjoying yourself, living in a 55+ community may be the perfect move for you to make. These communities tend to offer an extensive list of amenities and entertainment options for their residents to keep them active, socializing, and having a genuinely good time with one another.

If you currently feel lonely and would love to live in an area where you can meet new people and make friends, moving to one of these adult living communities is an excellent idea. In addition, you wouldn’t have to worry about keeping up with landscaping and yard work because you’d pay HOA fees that would cover the cost of hiring professionals to do the work for residents.

But, if you don’t like the idea of paying HOA fees or having rules to follow, you should reconsider moving to a 55+ community. Residents must follow the rules to ensure the community is safe, welcoming, and enjoyable for everyone there. You can always look at the rules beforehand and decide if you feel they’re reasonable or not before you officially decide to move into one of the many incredible 55+ communities throughout the state of Florida.

Deciding Which is Right for You (Maybe Even Non Age-Restricted?)

Overall, it’s important to consider all of your needs and wants for your future home. If you are mostly looking for a safe environment surrounded by similarly aged people, then perhaps a general 55+ community would be a fit. But if you are healthy and interested in a more active retirement lifestyle with tons of activities and amenities (like a resort) then an active 55+ community might be right for you.

But after some consideration, some people might actually choose to live in an active resort-style community that is non age-restricted. 

The choice is really up to you and how you envision your lifestyle and who you want to be surrounded by. Some people our realtor partners work with like the idea of being around people of differing ages, even younger people who might make them feel younger. Others much prefer being around people their own age. So it really is just a personal preference.

There are pros and cons to each, but taking the time to consider what you really want for your future lifestyle will help you make the right choice for you.

The Legacy Trail Sarasota is one of Florida’s most wonderful stretches of paved trail running all the way from Venice to Sarasota. It connects communities and neighborhoods in Sarasota as well as connecting to towns south of Sarasota including Osprey, Nokomis and Venice. The History of the Legacy Trail

The Legacy Trail in Sarasota has a rich history that dates back to the early 1900s. The newly constructed Seaboard Air Line Railway was ready for use in November of 1911, with the first passenger coach riding across it on the 12th of that month. However, it would take another 16 years before the Venice Train Depot would open with a railroad that helped locals survive some of the most trying times, including the Great Depression.

The railroad would continue to be used over the next several decades, helping transport cadets of the Kentucky Military Institute to their Venice classes and patients to and from the office of Dr. Albee. Although regularly used to bring goods into the city, even Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus used this railroad for their traveling circus! Unfortunately, by January 1992, service on the railway was discontinued for good.

Despite sitting for quite some time, Sarasota County eventually purchased the Venice Train Depot in 2003, restoring it to ensure that locals and tourists alike would have access to a little piece of incredible history in the area. It has since become a trailhead for the Legacy Trail Sarasota, often considered a starting point for those who want to experience every inch of the trail. And while the initial path was roughly 12.5 miles long, it has since been extended by an additional 7.5 miles. Visitors can still expect to see some upcoming changes, with overpasses set to be developed on both Bee Ridge Road and Clark Road.

How Long Is the Legacy Trail and Where Does It Go?

The Legacy Trail runs from Venice to Sarasota and is nearly 20 miles long, but it wasn’t always that way! A recent extension finished in 2022 added an extra 7.5 miles, stretching the trail even further into the downtown section of Sarasota by Payne Park. If you take this trail, you can stop at many places throughout the journey, starting with Legacy Park. Once you’re on the way, you will pass other local hot spots, such as Nokomis Riverview Park, Shakett Creek, Oscar Scherer State Park, and the Osprey Junction Trailhead, ending in Downton Sarasota by Payne Park.

The Legacy Trail access points are dotted all the way along the route, and it is so long that it takes you through heavily forested areas before bringing you into the bustling city, where you can stop and grab a bite to eat at places like Five-O Donuts or Fresh Mozzarella Pizzeria. Venice to Sarasota – Where does the Legacy Trail start? 

The southern portion of the trail takes you through the town of Venice. You can choose to start in Shamrock Park in the South Venice Neighborhood and take the Venetian Waterway trail that follows the Intracoastal and connects to popular areas of historic Venice Island. From there, you can go to the Venice Train Depot just off Venice Island and connect to the main Legacy Trail and head up north of Venice through Nokomis, Oscar Scherer State Park and on up to Sarasota. Whether you do the whole route from Venice to Sarasota, or just part of it, you are in for a great time because it is a fantastic trail.

North Port to Sarasota via New Extension!

In September 2022 the North Port Extension officially opened which connected the Legacy Trail to the town of North Port, which is east of Venice. Now trail users can enjoy a trip through the Deer Prairie Creek Preserve and other beautiful nature areas, connecting to other trails and going right into the North Port and Mineral Springs area.

Is There Parking Available for the Legacy Trail?

If you plan to drive to the Legacy Trail before heading off, you will want to know where to park your vehicle. The good news is that there are plenty of options throughout the trail, so no matter where you start your journey, you shouldn’t have difficulty finding a safe space to park your car. Some of the different places that provide public parking include:

Does the Legacy Trail Have Road Crossings?

Most of the Legacy Trail is road-crossing free. The trail is mostly designed to avoid or go around major roads, or there are bridges or tunnels under and over roads. However, there are a few places where the trail does actually cross the road.

In those few cases of road-crossings, there are signs to let you know and signs and signals for the cars to stop on the road. There’s also a distinct crosswalk area that you should use when you cross the roadway. However, it’s important that you pay attention and proceed with caution through the few road-crossings that there are. Be sure to look both ways and never assume that cars will stop.

How Difficult is the Legacy Trail?

Like much of Florida, the Sarasota area is quite flat. So the Legacy Trail does not have any natural hills to climb and is known to be a very easy trail no matter if you are walking, jogging or biking. 

The only hills you may encounter are raised trail bridges that go up and over major roads. And many of these bridges offer the option for you to stay at ground level and just go around the bridge and cross the road. However, the raised bridge allows for a much safer road crossing and you don’t have to stop if you are traveling fast.

If you are biking the Legacy Trail and have trouble with the bridges on a bicycle, then you can always walk your bike to the top and then enjoy the breeze as you ride down.

What’s Allowed on the Trail?

Before you head out on your journey on the Legacy Trail, it helps to know what is and isn’t allowed. Some people love walking the trail, and while it’s an option, there are other ways to travel through it. If you don’t want to walk or jog, you can ride a traditional bicycle, e-bike, or roller skates as you navigate your way around. Yes, e-Bikes are allowed on the Legacy Trail. But other motorized scooters are not.

Visitors can spend time on the trail as early as 6:00 AM and up until the sun sets for the evening. No one should move faster than a speed of 15 MPH, whether on a traditional bike, skates, or e-bike. In addition, you’re allowed to bring your four-legged friends with you, but make sure you put them on the appropriate leashes. Dogs aren’t allowed to roam freely on the trail and should be accompanied by their human companions at all times.

• Be mindful of others on the trail. Try not to take up all the space and give people plenty of room for their own activities, whether walking, cycling, skating, or jogging.
• Never dispose of trash on the trail. Hold it in your bag with you until you get to a trailhead and can dispose of the waste properly.
• Don’t forget the sunscreen. You may spend hours on the trail, which puts you at risk of sunburn. Reapply as needed when stopping at trailheads to use the restroom and get more drinking water.
• Be careful at any of the road crossings. There are a few of them, and even though there are signs, crosswalks and even signals that stop traffic in some areas, please always look both ways and proceed with caution.
